Silver Spring, MD Mazda Car Consumer Discussions

Re: 3s Touring w/moonroof $17,469 [samtheman1]

This weekend I bought a Copper Red Touring hatchback manual with a CD/moonroof at Darcars in Silver Spring, MD for $17500 including a $100 dealer processing fee. After a lot of research, Edmunds, consumer reports, etc, I made an offer of $17500 excluding tax and title 3 different dealerships. Two of them game me the runaround and quoted a invoice price that was 600 dollars above what i knew to be correct ( something about a port fee). Darcars agreed and sent me a e-quote that was 17600 but the sales guy said he would take care of it. When I arrived at the dealer the tried to add the dealer prep fee $100 but I stuck to my guns and they lowered the price by $100 and added the fee. I had arranged pre-financing and the dealer beat the rate by a 1/4 %. After enduring the dealer service plan and the extended warranty hard sell I signed the papers. I probably could have gone back and forth for a few days and improved my price but I felt it was a fair deal.
$750 under invoice for all remaining Mazda 3s (MD area)

While car hunting I got on the e-mailing list of Darcars in Silver Spring, MD. They just sent me a "special" list showing all remaining 3s for $750 under invoice. Fine print says "Internet Price includes Freight. Internet Price includes all incentives and rebates. Internet price excludes tax, tags, and $100 processing charge" so figure on $650 under invoice plus TTL. Since there are no known incentives and the college grad is history, then it would seem anyone could get this price. I assume the same price would be good at their other Mazda dealership in College Park, MD as well but it is not shown on their web page. Dennis

Here it is: Darcars Silver Spring, MD Mazda3 s Hatchback Strato Blue Automatic ABS/SAB/SAC Xenon/TPMS Leather $100 of little things I didn't want I saw the invoice at $19,438 and paid that, plus $99 "processing." I probably could have done $200 better, but I didn't feel I had too strong a position since a) Two other dealers had not offered me anything close to invoice even with multiple calls and b) I start commuting to another state Tuesday and need the car by then. They never heard about that, but it meant I couldn't legitimately walk away again (as I did last week, which improved this offer by $300). Not bad for my first new car, I think. If I had to do it over again, I would have made a decision on my model earlier (I've been thinking about the Corolla as well until just this morning), and (Mary Ann are you still listening?) I would not have negotiated one of the cars by email when I had any kind of time constraint. The fact that it can take a day for a dealer to get back to you slows the process down dramatically, and it gave me an excuse to drag my feet on picking a car. MSRP $20,755, OTD $20,700. Probably $200 more than I had to, but I'm not heartbroken. And I love it. BTW z71bill re the $200 off MSRP offer--I never even went into that dealership. Saw the car in inventory online, asked for a quote with no other conversation, was offered $200 off MSRP and the guy never budged. They must be flying off his lot, or someone else was looking at the same model, or he knew it was the only one in town. But the hardsell didn't work for him, and I got $1500 in options for $400 more than his offer. No regrets there. Thanks for your help, all. This is a valuable resource, and once we get everyone to come here, we can really get the dealers on the run.

I haggled to $400 over invoice and was offered $500 over invoice by a no-haggle place. As of a few weeks ago, most dealers right now are still demanding MSRP. Find a more rural one if that is the case.
