Re: Just Bought a 2009 GT AWD in San Jose CA [smilingbuddha]

I agree with the exception that high inventory levels is kind of relative. If you are looking for a GT AWD in the St. Louis area, forget it. There are Tourings and plenty of FWD, but nothing in the way of GT AWD selection, not to mention color flexibility is getting tight - mostly black and white, with some copper red and blue. We drove a couple hours to Springfield, IL to get ours. If you are willing to drive to Chicago or Indianapolis from here, the selection starts to improve a bit. $7K off sticker is pretty easy to achieve without the loyalty bonus - obviously $8K with. Based on what people got off 2008s last year, I'd say by December/January $10K off sticker on a loaded 2009 might be achievable.
Lessons from IL

Wanted to add a few comments after my deal "fell" thru today. I have posted my quote for a Touring AWD Bose/Moon of invoice 33600-4K-1K loyalty for a price of 28600. Called to check if still there yes, show up tomorrow you can have it for 28K even. Drove 2 hrs (Chicago burbs in rush hour) only to be told by a complete a -hole salesman that he sold it to another dealer and in so many words me, my wife and 4 month old to take a hike. I could go on, but won't ....so I went to the mothership dealer a couple of miles up the street (where my quote came from) talked to the quote guy and he was great tried to get me the deal, offered me 30K on a similar GT, called the owner of the dealership to try to get it done and they said it was traded for more that I was offering. Will give it to me for 29.3K I came back with 29K. No deal I walked over 300, but at that point it was the ethics and we got a bad vibe from the whole thing. I was not financing, had cash in hand, saw the CX-9 on the lot and was basically told....we don't want your money. This is my first brand new car purchase, so I was a little shocked to say the least. The lesson here for all of you is, if you want a 2009 with 4K-1K(loyalty) off of invoice jump on it. The internet guy at Community Mazda in Oak Forest IL will give you a great quote, but avoid the #^*hole salesman at all costs, they all know who he is. In fact stop by the community Pontiac GMC, pick up the internet quote guy and then go to the Mazda down the street. Hey that is my lesson for the day......

$1,800 in tax translated to 11.2% - your sales tax is that high? Your $16,005 price for everything other than sales tax for a 5 Sport AT (no options) is a lot better price than anything I've been quoted in CT/NJ/IL so far. If I normalize for the invoice cost of the options I've requested, your CA price (pre-tax) is still about $1,100 lower than the best IL price, and about $2,000 lower than the best east coast price for that car. There has to be some additional dealer incentives of some sort baked into certain geographic areas. On the east coast, the prices I've been quoted are within a few hundred dollars of each other, and in Chicago area same thing (waiting for MD quotes), but there are significant differences between the geographic areas.

I've gotten my first 2 quotes from IL dealers and they were $750 to $850 lower than the first CT dealer quote that I've gotten (all for the exact same car/features), so still unclear to me if that difference is partially attributable to an additional dealer incentive that only midwest dealers are getting. Neither IL dealer disclosed a manufacturer to dealer incentive when I asked about it. I'm getting more quotes from Chicago area dealerships as well as in CT/MA for comparison. The IL quotes were for a Mazda5 Sport AT, with popular equipment package, door edge guards, rear bumper plate, all weather mats and cargo net (cash, no trade-in) were: $17,758 and $17,852, both were OTD (includes everything except my CT sales tax, which I have to pay back in CT.)

The closest I could point you to is Evanston, IL (near Chicago). If nothing else, you could get a price and use it for negotiations. The best price was from Columbia, MO. Let me know if you want names.
