New to us 2006 Madza3
by grinnin on Thu Aug 27 08:59:45 PDT 2009
We are now officially a 2 Mazda family. In addition to the 2004 RX-8 in the garage, we bought a 2006 Mazda3s with 18K on it for $13,000 from a private party. It is copper red, has a 5sp manual, sunroof, leather heated seats and a few other goodies. Another plus is 2006 was the last year mazda offered the 48 month/50,000 mile mfr warranty, so we are covered for the next year just in case. It's a city car and there are more than a few minor scratches in the plastic bumpers and some decent curb rash on the alloys, so the deal was probably fair but not a stunning value. I gotta say we are pretty darn happy with the purchase so far. Our first 3 gas tanks have been 26mpg and 27mpg in mostly city driving, and 31 mpg mostly highway. I was a bit worried the 2.3L engine would not be so efficient, but I am way happy with those numbers. Our former 2000 Nissan Altima with a similar size and powered 4-cyl only got around 21mpg overall (granted with a 4-sp OD auto tranny) We have already been to the dealer once to get a broken rear suspension coil replaced under warranty, but I will keep y'all posted as we get some more miles on the car and tackle a Boston winter with it.
Re: Moonroof headroom [parrotsquawk]

I suppose they have to reinforce the roof when the moonroof is there, hence the smaller headroom. I don't feel the noise and water thing is an issue though. I've had 4 cars over the years, two of them American made, two foreign, and have never had an issue with noise or water. Personally, I don't use moonroofs much anyway, they just happen to already be on the cars we chose. I dont' think you are missing anything by not having one. We needed 3rd row and AWD too. We looked at the Pilot, Acadia, and Verecruz. I pretty much echo the same comments as the previous post. Acadia was too expensive for what you get, Pilot was nice, but they wouldn't deal much on them, Verecruz just didn't feel the same in terms of build quality/comfort. Either way, if you need 3 rows and AWD, you will not find anything that gets you very good gas mileage.
How did you compare the CX-9 to other cars?
by parrotsquawk on Mon Aug 24 04:37:31 PDT 2009
My wife is aghast at the gas mileage of the CX-9 and is turning me towards a crapbox for city driving (I may get the worst driving/best mileage car to spite her and then take her other car as mine!) What other cars did you compare the CX-9 to before purchasing?

Well, 28K miles later my CX7-GT-AWD has been using regular gas and there are no problems. Dealer said you could use premium but it was not necessary. Only previous model require premium gas. Oddly enough, I did test premium gas in my tank and the car seemed to burn the gas quicklier and the exhaust smelled like raw gasoline. Filled up my tank 2 times in the begining like that and after that I used only regular gas. I've owned my car 1.5 years and I love it. I wish for better mileage but since the car is fun to drive, I am willing to overlook it.

You need to better inform yourself, the CX7-GT-AWD 2008 model takes regular gas, production models before 08, had to use premium. Mazda reprogrammed the engine and fixed the problem.

We like it a lot, it fits our family of 3 (soon to be 4) well. We were looking for a vehicle with three rows of seats, priced within our smallish budget, and relatively reliable. We were looking at used vehicles (Odyssey, Sienna, Pilot, etc) until we heard about cash for clunkers. We randomly came across the M5, and although it's not as big as the aforementioned vehicles, we really liked it. None of us are very tall/big, so we think the M5 is comfortable...I've read that taller/bigger people may feel a bit cramped. Have sliding doors is really nice in the garage and parking lots! It only has a 4 cylinder engine, but I feel it is more than sufficient. It is fun to drive and very nimble. We don't have any towing needs, so that wasn't a concern for us. The road noise is a little louder than I'd like on freeways, but it depends on how picky you are about that. I feel like you sit up nice and high in the drivers seat (compared to our old Bonneville anyways), that is nice, you have a good view of everything. There isn't as much room in the rear as a full size minivan, so it depends on your needs there. We ended up getting a M5 Grand Touring with a few smaller options for under 15K...it's fun to get a brand new car with a bunch of extras for cheaper than a 3 year old Odyssey/Sienna/Pilot with none of the fun features. I wasn't too concerned about gas mileage while shopping around, but the good mileage of the M5 is a nice little bonus.
