Its a bogus paper processing and, in your case, phony PDI fee tacked on to the end of a deal as a way to gouge extra profit from you. Most car salesman are told in training that all car dealers have them now so that they can tell that lie without a qualm to a complaining customer surprised by the extra cost above the purchase price. This was what my brother was told in training when he began to sell Toyotas in Bradenton, FL. I had to tell him that such was not the case. I have a Honda dealer (Williamson) in Lincoln, NE from whom I bought a 2004 and 2006 Civic that has a $0 dealer doc fee; another, Superior Honda in Omaha, has only a $35 dealer doc fee. In Kansas City I have a Subaru dealer - Jack Miller - from whom I buy Subarus who has no dealer fee. Granted these are the anomalies today as most dealers have them. Yet they exist, particularly in the heartland where business practices are not as sharp. The coasts and the larger metropolitan areas sport the biggest dealer thieves where the fees can reach the $500 mark. At my Mazda dealer in Lincoln, NE I paid a $120 dealer fee for a 2004 Mazda 3i and $159 two years later for a 2006 Mazda 3s. When shopping for a new car today, the first question out of your mouth has to be what is your dealer fee.
