Document fees in Phoenix are considerably higher than what I'm seeing posted here from other places. They fell in the $299-$499(!) range for Mazda dealers here. Our license fees are based on the value of the car. On a new '08 Mazda3, it comes out to around $350. Every dealer here wants to tack on window tint - they put it on every new car unless you either specifically order it without it or you happen to find a car fresh of the truck that hasn't been tinted yet ($299 charge on the Mazda3 everywhere I checked). Most want to add some sort of "Desert Protection Package" that includes some sort of paint protection. Cardinale Way Mazda quoted me $1097 for their DPP & $499 for doc fees on a pre-owned 2007 Mazda3. I have no idea what their DPP included - I couldn't get past the shock of them adding $1600 to the price right out of the gate (an internet advertised price that was higher than invoice on a new 2008, BTW). I found that, of the 5 dealers I got bids from in the Phoenix area, they all started by adding about $900 in total adds to the price of a new '08 (+TT&L). At the end of December, one of the dealers was offering 500 under invoice for anything in stock, the others were all willing to sell the 3 at invoice without argument.

No sweat on the confusion. Ideally both inputs would be available! I could learn to use the Ipod integration, or just use the aux jack. But since I am a 90% podcast listener, I was worried about using the integration exclusively and not being able to navigate the podcast menus on my iPod. sometimes the best puns are unintentional! Ah. Sorry to add any confusion myself. I guess the aux jack is better than nothing - and a must if you have a "pod" that is other than Apple. Even so, I've gotten used to controlling my iPod through the steering wheel controls, and have even become "playlist-centric," because that's what seems to work best when one has the quantity of songs I do. "On the bright side... self dimming mirror" If that's not a pun, it should be. Good stuff. ;)

c92, The CX-9s have an aux input port inside the center console. Its very well located and well designed for cell phones and iPods. When you install the iPod converter without intalling the switch box, you lose the aux input in the console. For many buyers (including myself) the confusion begins there. The switch box runs an extra $113 or more, plus installation. On the bright side, I bought the Mazda self dimming rear view mirror with compass and homelink, and installed it myself yesterday. After a few moments of apprehension pulling apart such a new vehicle, all went well. For those interested, make sure you buy the correct installation kit! My vendor recommended the wrong kit, and I had to run all over town locating the correct kit. Brad

If you don't have NAV or Sirius, what features do you have to lose by installing the iPod interface? I have a CX-7 optioned similarly (nothing but the Bose stereo as far as A/V toys) and have grown to really LOVE the Mazda iPod box. Is it perfect? No. But for the CX-7, at least, the vehicle audio display is the limiting factor, and no reasonable amount of aftermarket trickery is going to make a better-integrated system. If you're thinking about replacing the whole darn head unit, then I guess the sky's the limit... -c92
