I do appreciate your position but at the same time, if they (the car dealers) will try to schiest you like this without discounting their vehicle for sale enough to compensate, then that's where I'd have to say, "Who were you kidding?" The game in this scenario becomes completely one sided (i.e., the Salesmen at the Dealer make their money on both the sides). I'd like to think I'm way more intelligent than to fall for stupidity of this nature. Citing examples for what was said above, from all the dealerships that I've showed my vehicles to (1 Honda (Bankston), 2 Nissan (Avery Johnson North Texas Nissan and Bankston Nissan Dallas), 3 Lexus (Sewell Dallas and Fort Worth as well as Park Place Plano), a Used Car (European Motors) and CarMax (Plano and Irving), only Sewell (both locations), AJ North Texas Nissan and the European Motors Used Car dealership were trying to schiest me on the Trade-in Value. The remainder dealerships were in a respectable range (i.e., within a few hundred of what I sought for the Trade in Value) BUT two factors played in to my decision here: 1. My wife wanted a Lexus; AND 2. Coincidentally, Park Place Lexus DID work their tails to get my business. One and one eventually came together when the right car got here but otherwise, the numbers were in place and the only dealy was inventory related. Bottom line....and my point to all of the above: While your theory on the current economic environment playing its impact role on my prospects applies, it only has a PARTIAL TRUTH VALUE. All that stuff is a thing of the mind. If you can sell your car and make the presentation well enough while simultaneously knowing who to weed out, you'll get your target with due time and patience. This is the one tremedously stressful thing that is a part of the car purchasing experience.

Don't worry, at 770 you'll qualify as LFS's tier 1+. If anything, your score will most-likely be higher at the dealership. I recently posted the may numbers so check those against what the dealer is quoting you. At .00155, he's definitely marking up his rate to build profit into the deal. It's certainly not illegal for him to do that, but with your excellent credit, you deserve the buy rate money factor. If they won't utilize the buy rate money factor, find another dealer - simple as that. There is nothing wrong with letting him know that you know the numbers. I always advise prospective buyers to be firm, but be polite. He needs the deal more than you, especially when there is competition - remember that. Double check his invoice against Edmund's or KBB. His invoice will be off about $400-$500 as it accounts for a regional advertsing fee.
Summertime buy or lease LS460/SWB in NYC
by bermanslaw on Fri May 09 09:00:58 PDT 2008
I'm new to the forum concept but have already learned much from reading recent posts, so I'm hoping for some sound advice & guidance. I'm coming off a long lease on an MB CL500 (fabulous car) on July 1 and am seriously interested in the "08 LS460 SWB. I've never had a Lexus before. Having moved into Manhattan from the commuting suburbs, I expect my annual mileage to fall well below 10K, though a 7500K lease mileage option may be cutting things a bit close. If I purchase, I will finance. In either event , I never opt for down payments and will pay the sales tax up front. Here are my questions: 1. Manhattan/environs dealer or widen the search? Recent comments suggest that FL dealers are giving great deals while NYC dealers are still pretending the economy's flush, but the prospect of negotiating and taking delivery from afar seems daunting. 2. Wait til summer to make a deal or start now? I can do without a car if needs be til September, so I feel no urgency on that score. Waiting seems like a good bet, given the economy, slowing auto sales volume and rising gas prices, but if there's a gas tax holiday and an unexpected bump in volume, I could find myself with fewer choices as the '09 model year draws near. 3. Purchase or lease? Here, my inquiry relates to which offers the best bang for the buck at the moment in terms of promotions, interest factors, etc. 4. Either way, do I have any realistic chance of making a deal that will keep my monthly payment under $1K without making a down payment? I've read about those prepaid multiple security deposits and wonder whether that is a sensible tactic. I will welcome your comments. Many thanks.

Florida dealers aren't anything special. Not to mention, they are famous for adding undisclosed fees to the price ($599 doc fees?!). Yup - they are ridiculous with their doc fees. I'm analyzing a deal for a prospective buyer who just happens to live in Florida - sure enough, the dealer's structure has a $599 doc fee listed. {shaking my head} $599 to messenger some paperwork - I'll take that job! Haha...
Re: Narrow price difference between new RX350 and used RX330 CPO [krisv]

I did almost all my initial outreach with dealers via e-mail, and let them reply online and/or leave me voicemails. I told them the price I was looking for ($40.9k) Some dealers were willing to meet it/negotiate, others were not. Timing: It was mid-August and I believe the monthly quota/sales incentives may have been a factor. The Lamb (we're not supposed to use names here!) replied online, via voicemail and then strongly suggested we speak by phone. He was very straightforward about what he could do (meet my price) and could not do (i.e. he couldn't take my trade-in at my inflated $$ value!) In the end, Prestige accepted my offer of about $5k off of MSRP($45.9) and I sold my old car independently. I never saw their dealer "invoice" but understand that my price was within a few hundred $. It's clear they made some profit and it's a good deal all around. The first time I ever went to Prestige was to pick up the car. Overall, I had an excellent experience, and appreciated the very to-the-point discussions. He did take the time to answer all my questions -- and once he knew I was serious, i.e. I gave him my credit card as a deposit, he met every need and addressed every issue. I suggest you show him you are serious (if you are) because dealers are inundated by mere "prospects." Make an offer for a specific car, but then be prepared to commit with a deposit -- otherwise, they'll rightfully know you're jerking them around. BTW, the deposit is not irrevocable. Ray Catena dealership in NJ also was ready to bargain, but had a very junior guy communicating with me -- slower decisions. Good luck, I'll be curious to hear what you do.
Strange Happening at TN Dealership
by frankluther on Mon May 14 05:06:47 PDT 2007
Last December, we ordered a 2007 GX 470 with ML/Navigation, Lexus Link, Rear Entertainment System, Satellite Radio except we did not a third row seat. The price was not great at $2000 over invoice, but much better than the local Memphis dealer and far less attitude. We placed a $2000 deposit and received confirmation from the Internet sales person. We were told that it would take 120 days for the SUV to arrive. In late January, we were told that we could not get the rear entertainment system unless we got the third row according to the Japanese production facility. So we told them to continue with the order without the rear entertainment system. In late March, I contacted my sales guy to get an update on delivery. We were hoping that it would arrive early. He confirmed that everything was fine with the order. During the third week of April, I called again to coordinate my trip to the city to pick up the car. He did not return my phone calls for two days. On the third day, the sales manager called and said that the order was never submitted. He was rather nonchalant about it. He offered no other explanation as to how this could happen and offered to return my deposit or reorder another SUV. He offered no other concessions. I am not much on conspiracy theories. The salesperson had multiple times to correct the situation. Why didn't he? Why did the Japanese production facility send the order change if the order was never submitted? I think they sold the SUV to someone else that saw the vehicle in the store for a higher price. Maybe someone like us, who did not want the third row. I don't believe the sales guy was that incompetent or blatantly lied over and over when we exchanged messages by saying that everything was fine on multiple occasions. He was promoted during this time and is still with the dealership, but I have not been able to reach him. We are angry and frustrated with the prospect of waiting until October for the SUV. We like the SUV, but don't care much for the front-end people. And we don't want to pay $50K and not get exactly what we want. Any suggestions for finding out what really happened? Do we have any recourse? I have been contemplating writing Lexus of North America to complain. Any suggestions are welcome. Thakns.
