LR3 Lease Ending - Need Advice
by s.k. on Fri Mar 13 01:51:58 PDT 2009
In May 2006, I leased a 2005 LR3 SE that already had 1600 miles on it at the following terms: 36 month, 15,000 miles/year at $728.44/month (7.5% tax included) with $943 out of pocket (Including the first month payment and paper work. There was no need for security deposit but I will have to pay a disposition fee when I return the car at the end of the lease.) I was told by the dealer that the MSRP of truck at that time was $50,770 and that their selling price was $40,770. The options on this truck included GPS, cold weather package, and the lighting group. The dealership also told me that there were a couple thousand dollars worth of additional dealer-installed options that they were not counting in the pricing such as wood grain dash, trailer hitch...I also had a trailer braking system installed afterwards. A few days ago, I got a call from Bank US that since my lease is ending in two months, I could either return the truck at the end of May or buy it from them for $23,465 plus any taxes, fees and "other charges". On the other hand, they told me that they would also entertain an offer from me on the purchasing price. I would like to seek your advice on: (1) Are there any reasons that I should walk away from this truck at the end of the lease, e.g., some known reliability issues on 2005 LR3, high maintainence costs, etc? (2) If I should go about making an offer, what is a good starting dollar number in your opinion? (3) If I should decide to return the truck, should I do anything in getting the truck ready before returning it to avoid additional charges from the bank? BTW, I have about 41000 miles on the truck at this time and its conditions are OK in general. I have already bought another truck (a 2008 GMC Sierra 1500) late last year but could use the LR3 as a spare vehicle. Thank!

Well I will give my feed back on my buying experience. I have two 2008 RRS's. I paid $67,000 including tax, tags and title, in the new york area with, rear dvd, luxury interior, satellite, running boards, and a few other insurance packages. I purchased the vehicles in April and received the buyer loyalty discount. Prior to owning RRS's I had a discovery. The main reason I bought the brand again was because of the service I received on my first vehicle. Both of my suv's have about five thousand miles on them. Pros: My wife and I love the cars. The style simply sets them apart from other SUV's in the luxury class. The interior is wider than the discovery and very comfortable for an adult to sit in between. Also if you have kids the reason we did not get the RR was due to the difficulty of moving the car seats in and out of the vehicle. When we finally got the seats in it was also a tighter fit in the middle. It has the sport transmission used once, nice feature if you off road I guess. The car raises and lowers for access and off-roading respectively. Which I enjoy, the access part at least, I don't know if it will ever see real dirt... It has cool transmission features for different terrain conditions, admittedly not getting much use. The driver and passenger seats are very comfortable and recline nicely for long road trips. There are also very few blind spots while driving. The SUV has a very smooth ride. There is a refrigerator between the driver and passenger seats which is nice to keep things cool. Service, they come and pick the vehicle up, give you a loaner and bring it back. To me that is nearly priceless. Cons: The first con is lack of space in the rear. There is significantly less room than we had in the Discovery. We have an extremely large dog which we now have difficulty travelling with when we try to bring luggage. The fridge does not cool anything down, if it is not cold going in, it is going to take hours to get cold. Soda in the fridge for three hours and it was slightly chilled. The fridge should also have a pull out liner so when you spill the kids milk in it you can take it out to clean! I-pod integration is a joke, basically a jack in the back seat you plug your I-pod into. This is in need of serious improvement. The I-pod does not integrate into the sound system so you still need to have access to it to change songs, etc. OKS: Navigation system is ok, not the best I have used. Gas mileage is about 13-15 mpg average. The phone blue tooth integration is adequate though sometimes people have difficulty hearing me. Problems: The only problem so far has been with the DVD player in one of the SUV's this was a problem when we bought the car. It needed to be replaced. If I think of anything else I'll add it... Still highly recommend the car!

OK thanks. This begs the question "what is your area?" though buuying a vehicle out of state is very difficult for CA residents. Thanks,

Your downpayment was high. $4000 spread over 30 months is effectively adding $133 dollars a month to the lease. So you are up to $533 before tax. But wait, as an investor you will undoubtedly know that you would have most likely received a return if that $4000 was invested over 30 months in say a Fidelity Fund. Over the last two and a half years (30 months) your $4000 would now be work about $6000 in a moderately performing Mutual Fund. So actually if you include the sum you could have made over the next 30 months if you invested the $4k that adds as a cost up to $200 dollars a month. I know I don't need to tell you this because you are an investor. Most other quotes on here from LR include sales tax and "Property Tax". which can be another $80-100 a month in the first year because your quote does not include it.. LR always include all taxes in their quotes, which is often over looked when comparing. So before everyone rushes in and asks for $400 a month leases, in reality, with nothing down, you are probably still talking $670 to $700 per month once everything is accounted for. You got the car you wanted, satisfaction and enjoyment is hard to price. That's the cost of getting a Landrover. It is a "Goods of Ostentation" product. In reality, by lowing the price of the product LR may in fact overall see declining revenue and profit. Mad but possible.

Same situation I had my heart in an LR2 but my brain told me it did not make financial sense. So before heading out to lease an X3 (5-6K more expensive and almost $200 per month less than the initial LR2 lease quote), I gave it a shot and spent a few exhausting hours with the most reasonable LR dealer I found in my area, until I walked out with a "deal". I'm paying $400+tax per month, 30 month lease on a blue+black interior LR2 w/ lights packg. $4K total down 12K miles per year. Dealer claims they are almost losing money..and I almost believe them...It is still worse than what I was getting at BMW, but within reasonable distance. I love the LR2, but it is car, not an asset... a car is an expense, a liability thus the reason I Lease and invest money in assets. There is someone dumb enough in this forum to assure LR does not need the money. What they need is smarter financial people after spending tons of money in Marketing and building a nice product. Guess what, the product is not complete...without a good price...which also includes competitive financing, they are lacking big time in what could be their best seller ever. Specially considering their previous experience with their entry model in the US. It really seems odd...but then again ..I did get the car I wanted ..almost at the price I wanted(down pay was too high)...so people...there is hope out there!!!
