07 LX I-4
by vanner on Sun Mar 16 09:08:24 PDT 2008
Okay, we made a deal on a Rondo, finally. Very bad weather and an "abundant" family schedule held us up a bit, but we got it at last. Had to leave Louisville for a decent deal and any assortment in stock. Went to Car Town Kia in Nicholasville/Lexington, where they had an excellent but rapidly selling stock of '07s. '07 LX I4 2-row with "Convenience Package". Monroney sticker (MSRP) put it at usd $19,220. There was indeed a dealer "gross profit" add-on sticker of $899 for and "Appearance Package" and $499 for "AMA". Neither was explained and the "AMA" thing remains a total mystery. That whole sticker disappeared instantly when we told them it had to go. No argument from them at all. Rebates of $2500 on the '07, and $1500 "loyalty" for having a Kia already. We had our '05 Sedona LX with 34K miles in excellent shape for trade. We spent a couple hours with a drive and some bartering, ending up with $16,800 for the Rondo, including 6% KY sales tax, license and title fee (which is about $10 in KY). It made the price of the Rondo around $15,800 which was about $800 more than I would have liked. There are reasons we opted to settle though, not the least of which is they gave us $10,000 for our Sedona, and that exactly paid off our remaining loan on it. (We went in front-heavy on the Sedona.) I only expected $8000 for the Sedona. So our total deal, out the door, was $16,800 with no hassle to sell our Sedona ourselves. I seriously doubt, in this area, we would have gotten any more than $9000 for the Sedona in a private sale. Kias just aren't that hot around here except among "those who know", and the Louisville dealer(s) have made them very unpopular. EVERYONE around here knows about the continuing, nagging problems with '05 and earlier Sedonas. Yeah, I know, there are many of you who will say we could have done better or you did. We're pleased and that's enough. We got what we wanted in a new car. Car town was a hoot to do business with! The experience was almost fun, and at no time did we feel pushed or trapped. We bartered, both sides, fairly openly, and the Sales Manager was accessible. We made it plain up front we had no intentions of financing through the dealer or Kia since we already knew we were "pre-approved" through our credit union at a rate lower than we could get through them. Quite frankly, Car Town provided the best actual sales experience I've had in years form a dealer. Yes, they made money. No deal if they don't. If you're in the north/central KY area and in the mood for a Kia, I'd recommend Car Town. Oh, they do ALL the typical dealer tricks and strategy. Go prepared like you should with any dealer. I'll post some early impressions on the Rondo over on the "Kia Rondo" section. One interesting and humorous incident with the Rondo before we ever got it off the lot. This was not the same one we test drove. That one had an "appearance enhancement" on the left rear bumper wrap that consited of a BIG rub and deep scratches, with yellow paint included, so we took one of the two other one of identical equipment and color. (Around here, right now, an '07 LX I4 will be red or silver.) Well, for reasons we couldn't explain at first, the remote lock fobs wouldn't work at all, nor did the liftgate latch. Started it up and found no center console lights and no radio. Soooo...that indicating a fuse, we went to the inside fuse panel and were still mystified. I poked around the manual a bit and settled on that "Memory" fuse. It was pulled partly out, leaving the circuit open. The fuse is there just for that reason - to cut off the memory functions running full-time in these cars, to save the battery when the car is parked long term. With the recent cold weather/blizzards here, and these cars on the lot for three weeks, the lot guys pulled the fuses. No one told the sales people and since we closed our deal hours after the service guys left, no one knew. I pulled the fuse all the way and popped it back in, and all was well. Good thing I still know something about cars!

Around here is obviously a bunch different from the Northwest. Kia is not held in wide regard by folks around "Ford Country" here. Oh, there are plenty of them on the road, but the only way to move one is either private sale or trade to a Kia dealer. This whole deal hinges on the loyalty rebate since it supposedly "goes off" here in the midwest at the end of today. Also, this particular Rondo is the last 07 4 cylinder this dealer has left - so the story goes - and has a "hold deposit" on it from another party who is trying to arrange finance - so the story goes. (I would think if there was some questionable credit, they'd let Kia write it since they take anyone with a $100 bill in hand.) There's a dealer in Lexington - hour and a half away - I called Saturday and they have a bunch of '07 4 cyl. Also, just south of Cinci is a huge dealer with a bunch of 07 4cyl, and either tells me "low -$15K less trade". So We have choices if we don't mind a short ride, and we don't. We still would take a good import sedan, too, so the options are many and we aren't in any real hurry. I'd just like to get it over with while we both want to trade and before our summer travels start. If this doesn't go the way I want it, we do something else somewhere else, that simple. Thanks for the tips. We'll report back.

Sorry to have overlooked your question on dealer servicing. My experience has been very positive in that respect. I'd strongly recommend dealer only servicing. If a warranty issue comes up, you've got records to prove that a defect exists since only the dealer has serviced the vehicle. This policy can avoid disputes over who's responsible for the work. Is it more costly? Definitely. Does it pay off in the long run? Definitely.

Not having purchased a Spectra as yet, and after reading the brochures and talking with salespeople, it's my understanding that when you open the drivers door, with the engine off, the lights automatically shut off. According to the post from ISELLKIAS there are two oil change intervals. One is for no stop/go or long distance trips,(7500 miles) and one for stop/go driving i.e. city, where engine is turned off frequently. He did not mention what that stop/go mileage interval was. Personally, I change oil/filter every 3K miles, regardless of what the owner's manual says. Outside of one battery failure, my present car has 63K with NO problems. According to posts on the consumer ratings page, Kia is very, very strict on changing oil (according to that posting) within 5 miles of recommended mileage, OR they will not honor related warranty claims. This posting may be a little over the top, but check with your dealer to see if this is correct or just the requirements of that owners' dealer. From the various postings in the consumer ratings pages, warranty service for obvious defects may or may not be easy to obtain. From the number of postings on the Spectra consumer ratings pages, it seems like many folks have experienced difficulty in trying to get warranty repairs.

Thanks for the valuable information on the servicing and oil change intervals. The brochure is somewhat vaguely arranged regarding the ABS system. IMHO. I've read many reviews, many favorable, some otherwise on this model. One recurrent comment regarding the quality of the service departments appears frequently. Since you sell the product, this definitely does not help either the car's reputation or inspire the public's confidence in the dealer body. Traveling West, as I do each Fall, I take note of the makes and frequency of sightings of cars with out-of-state plates at far distances from their home state. Over the last several years I've only spotted one Spectra (in Nebraska) with Connecticut tags. There are plenty of Sorentos and Kia vans however. Thanks for the advice on purchasing new versus used.
