Buying a car from a Kia Car Dealer

IN Kia Car Consumer Discussions

Wow, I can't touch anything like the prices quoted here by grrldriver on Thu Sep 15 08:38:42 PDT 2011

For starters, every dealer was out of 2011 Kia's by June. The lowest I saw was ONE 2011 EX, advertised for $23K, list $30K (or something like that), yet people posting here seem to be getting TEN THOUSAND OFF sticker price. WTF? Furthermore, what I want is a clean used Kia. I was told they had the worst resale prices in the industry -- literally, the lowest. But USED Kias (and Hyundai Entourages) are at such a premium, I have been beaten out 3 times, to buy a 4 year old vehicle at $13-14K. That's not cheap, if the owner (according to older posts here circa 2008-2009) were paying only $18-19K for a brand NEW Sedona EX; that means it barely depreciated at all in 4 years and 50K. What is going on here? I do notice that Kia's (and many other cars) have had exploding price increases. Some of this is going for what I consider very unnecessary options (that are now unavoidable) like power sliding doors and liftgates, rear parking cameras, and so on. They've made a very affordable vehicle now almost as pricey as a Honda or Toyota, without the supposed resale value. 4 years ago when I bought my last minivan (Nissan Quest), I paid $11K. In 2005, I bought a minivan -- $11K. In 2002, I bought a minivan -- $11K. Prices were incredibly stable. These were ALL 4 year old vehicles with less than 50K miles. Yet this year, I can't TOUCH anything for $11k or close. The lowest prices are Kia's, but are rarely under $14K -- that's a 40% price increase! Furthermore, dealers are very arrogant....act like they don't care if you buy or not. Or that they always sell at "full asking price". Yesterday, a dealer dragged me across town (60 mile round trip, with gas at $3.79!) to see a dirty, stained, scratched Hyundai Entourage, which I could not drive (it hadn't been to the service dept) and demanded $14K, and that they were not giving up so much as $1 on the deal. And he had a another buyer -- she went to lunch while he was supposedly evaluating her trade, and in that hour, he was trying to sell to me! behind her back! nice guy! -- and mind you this for a car I was not permitted to drive, filthy, scratched, etc. He was not negotiating. He didn't have to, because he claimed "everyone wants minivans". Of course, other dealers and common sense tell me most carmakers aren't even producing minivans, due to low sales, and even Kia is discontinuing the Sedona after 2012! (The Entourage is long gone.) That means of course, NO lower price minivans, just Hondas and Siennas for $40K new, $25K used. I'm just having horrible, horrible problems buying a Kia Sedona EX (2006 or newer) or a Hyundai Entourage in the NE Ohio area -- I'm no youngster, and have bought many cars, and 4 vans and I've literally never seen anything like this. The dealers practically spit on me when I walk in the door (if they even acknowledge my presence). I've had handshake deals, and deals with actual buyer agreements that were violated, as they sold cars out from under me, sometimes by only an hour or so ("we're a first come, first serve business"). In the past, I could usually PICK the best used van from a selection of 4-5 -- now I can't find ANYTHING. The prices are way, way up -- this makes NO SENSE if (according to older posts here), people were paying IN THE TEENS for Sedonas just 3 years ago!!!! And dealers are not dealing at all. I mean literally. Literally, yesterday a dealer told me he did not have to lower his asking price one cent to make a sale. He didn't need the sale. He didn't even have to clean the car to sell it! He did not have to let me test drive it. That's how CONFIDENT he was to sell at full asking price, 40% over what I have paid in the past. I don't get it. I'm doing something wrong -- what? What is it I have to do to find a new (used) van?

2009 LX Base, Bloomington, IN by kb9nvh on Tue Dec 29 14:55:53 PST 2009

New Borrego 2009 LX 4WD W/floor mats (no other options) for $22.5K. This was after a 3K incentive and a 1.5K loyalty incentive (4.5K). I think this is only about 900 bucks cheaper than the national average according to edmunds and automobilemag.com. According to the later, quite a few have been sold for 1,2 and 3 K less than I paid. My attempts to get a better price locally proved fruitless. I also, got 5K trade-in for a 2005 Chrysler T&C TOURING, with 125000 miles. It was the last Borrego they had left. I think the trade I could have gotten $6K private sale so 5K trade in seemed good to me.

Re: Buying a new 2007 SUV in April, 2008 [pesco] by cheapengineer on Fri May 02 13:19:20 PDT 2008

Okay, so I bought a 2006 Sorento demo (never titled) with all of the bells and whistles in May of 2007 with 5200 miles. This is the same as your situation, just a year later.... Sticker: $31355 Rebate to Dealer: - 4500 Net 26855 Price paid w/o TTL 20800 Net discount $6055 Basically I got 22.5% off the sticker price after adjusting for the rebate. Using the same math, a similar deal would put your 2007 at $19557. Be sure to check the internet for the official KIA rebate, it may be higher for the year old model. It all depends how bad they want to get rid of it and how bad you want it.

Price Paid for 2006 Sorento EX by cheapengineer on Sun May 13 15:46:03 PDT 2007

I just bought a 2006 Sorento EX demo for $20,800 w/o TTL. It had 5430 miles on it,it was never titled so it is basically new. It is an EX with the luxury package, anti-lock brakes, rear spoiler, cargo tray, remote start and side step bars. MSRP was $31355. Is this a good deal? I believe that the rebate is $4500 now although I don't see that posted anywhere. The rebate was not part of the deal; I'm assuming that the dealer took it direct.

BAD Louisville Kia Store experience! by fortyfiver on Wed Sep 14 07:07:06 PDT 2005

It would take hours and volumes to relate the whole horror story of the botched deal, incompetent, unethical office staff, "stalker" salesman and the lack of interest or respect from the Kia Store in Clarksville, IN. This is part of all of the "Kia Store" chain in the Louisville, KY area that are part of the Montgomery auto group. NEW 2005 Sedona LX new $18K and change. Clean deal, no trade. All incentives and rebates to dealer for the price. Includes $1000 "competitive vehicle" discount for the old ratty Aerostar we're keeping. There are no document fees around here. Dealer prep was $200 and it took them two tries and they STILL didn't get it all done. First try they left all of the plastic on the carpet - just dropped the mats over it. Left several pieces of the clear tape on door posts, etc. They had overnight and a whole next day to get it done. After the second try it is resolved now but took us job time and drive time to get there. BUT - when we went to get it - finally - Monday - after "owning it" for a week without actually HAVING it - they gave it to my wife with a "check engine" light on! Turns out to be a faulty fuel system pressure sensor and they still have the car because they didn't have the part. Now, how in H*LL can you give a customer as much trouble as this deal has been (over 10 trips to dealer to try to fix this crap with time lost from work and family!) and then futz up AGAIN by handing over a faulty vehicle?!!! Paper work was, and still is a nightmare. Yes - bought in Indiana and going to KY. BUT - this dealership is four miles from the KY line and less than 10 minutes drive in peak rush hour. They are over here every day to transfer vehicles. First try they made out IN title work, not KY. Second try they convinced my wife (it's her car, but KY demands both spouses on title) it's okay to forge MY signature on the docs. Didn't realize they couldn't charge us the IN excise tax on the heavy vehicle until we caught them and brought it out. There was also a dandy dealer-installed "bonus" that is mandatory at the Louisville area Kia stores on ALL Kias - a pass-card anti-theft device. This is an e-bay $25 piece of crap that is crudely installed and marginally effective and comes with a mandatory "stripe" set that is the Walmart $4.97 plastic tape crap! Price for this dealer profit rip-off? $1295 - NON NEGOTIABLE! For $30 worth of crap. No, it will NOT be covered by KIA warranty and had to be installed by cutting the ignition switch relay wire which may actually VOID the Kia warranty! The "security stripe package" is included in the $18K deal, so it isn't all THAT bad -but the additional $1200 profit for the dealer just REALLY tees me off since you can't get one without it, and you'd have to go a hundred miles or more in any direction to get away from this gorilla dealer complex. We have a call open with KIA USA customer relations - the poor girl who called us last night all bubbly and charming to "welcome" us to the "Kia Family" doesn't get paid anywhere NEAR enough to hear what she had to hear about the dealer and the problems. We did not abuse her mind you - she didn't do all this - the Montgomery Kia Store did this. She has opened a file with us with the Relations folks who are supposed to call us back today. This oughta get good! About the dealer rep: He actually "came on" to my wife, suggested they could meet some time, then actually visited her, unannounced, at her place of work - a SECURE installation! He had some imagined paper-work "emergency" he needed her to RIDE with him - alone - to fix! Well, a call to the dealer manager (who ducks our calls now - we have to deal with the Montgomery VP level) proved he had been told to call us and see when we could arrange to sign the paper at the dealer! He also one time before engaged her in conversation at the dealer for ten minutes or more, under the guise of the office working on some papers - only to at last admit to my exasperated wife that in reality he was just keeping her there to visit with her! We have discussed this with the Montgomery people as a sexual harassment complaint and the dealership manager blew it away as a joke! Then they told us he was being suspended for three days without pay. We now know one of those days is his normal day off anyway, and the other days are Tuesday and Wednesday - the slowest sales days they have! We are actually investigating criminal complaint against the rep under KY stalking statutes. We feel he is a time-bomb waiting to assault or compromise some other woman some other time and simply shouldn't BE in a customer-contact job, so even if the charges were to be dropped, he'd have a "file" and the protective order would stand for a while. Anyway - we really would like to say how much we like the Sedona, but since we've driven it less than forty miles in nine days - all between our home and the dealer - we really don't have much to say! I'll get back to the forum on that maybe later, unless we can succeed in breaking this deal and getting involved with a conscientious dealer of some other brand. Too bad - we really want a Sedona but we can't put up with this crap. I have to honestly warn anyone in the greater Lousiville area to avoid the Kia Store as the incompetent, unethical, and abusive plague it is and just buy something else somewhere else. (We have since found WELL over two dozen people in a week who have had similar problems with these dealers and they, too, tell people to run for their lives!)
