Re: considering purchasing a 1998 Trooper [bizeeb]

I had a 98 Trooper myself. The problem I had with it was the computer failed and it cost $800 to replace. I would have the truck checked out and if the mechanic ok's it, I would go for it. It is a tough truck for sure, but be aware, it cannot be driven like a car as they have a high center of gravity and will roll over if he tries to drive it like a sports car.

I can relate. I had a 2001 Rodeo and the engine head gasket failed destroying the engine. Luckily I was covered under the powertrain warranty, though it took 4 weeks to get my vehicle back. Other than that, I really liked the vehicle. Ya never know.

I am planning on picking up up a new 2001 Trooper Limited 2WD tonight for approximately $7700 off of MSRP. Could have gotten the same discount on a 4WD. Faxed bid requests to numerous dealerships in the area, and the best quote had the driveout price including taxes coming under what most dealers quoted before taxes. As long as things go smoothly and I come home with it tonight, I will give a follow-up report on the exact figures. Only thing that scares me are reports of gas going up to $3 a gallon. Yikes!
I need the wise ones to help us make a decision....

My husband and I are trying to decide which SUB to buy. We like the 2001 Tahoe and 2001 Trooper S. Both are 4 by 2. The trooper dealer in Nashville at Bob Frensley seems nice enough, and I think we could get a great car for $300 or so above invoice and 0% financing. The only drawback is the uncomfortable seats. The tahoe will have to be ordered as the only ones available are loaded to the gills with needless options. Both cars will be in the neighborhood of $30,000. Of course, the Tahoe will be a few thousand more due to finance charges, but those seats are so comfortable... could be worth extra on long trips. Gas mileage is equivalent. Trooper gets the moon roof. Tahoe is larger. Both drive equally well. Surprisingly, after researching the reviews and reading these boards for 8 months trying to decide, I have found it to be even as far as current customer compliments/complaints go. So, we bring it to you. Please help. Also, I am posting this on the dealers page since I want to get the maximum deal on an LS with moonroof and leather that is possible. We are willing to drive 250 miles to get it!! Any idea??? One other item, is it possible to change that center console in any way, and do the seats get more comfortable with time???
acola - fuel economy
by bluedevils on Sun Mar 11 07:06:00 PST 2001
15 mpg sounds low for a highway trip, but if you provide more specific details that would help us determine why your fuel economy was lower than expected. There's a BIG difference between 70mph and 80mph in Trooper fuel economy. I've never traveled significant distances at 80, but at 75 my 98 Trooper w/TOD off gets about 17.5 mpg straight highway. At 70, I get about 1 mpg better than that. If you were changing speeds frequently between 70 and 80, you might even get worse fuel economy than if you had the cruise set at 80 because accelerating uses more gas than constant speeds. Other questions: What year is your Trooper? Does it have TOD? Was TOD on or off? How many miles on your Trooper? If it's a pretty new truck, you may still be breaking in the engine. What was the air temperature? All of my vehicles, including both Troopers I've owned, do noticeably worse (approximately 5-10%) on gas here in Michigan when the weather turns cold (35 degrees or less). This is either because of the cold weather itself, or because of the reformulated "winter" fuel that I think is sold in areas such as Michigan in the colder months. Tire pressure also may play a significant role in your fuel economy. I keep mine right at the 30psi front / 35 rear manufacturer spec. You would probably do better if you bumped those numbers up a bit when on highway trips. My OEM Bridgestone Dueler 684 tires say 35psi max on the sidewall, though.
downshifting problem
by gberry on Thu Jan 04 14:02:57 PST 2001
as I explained on another board, there is a WHOOSH sound like a gust of wind under the car (really it's the sound of the engine racing, according to the mechanic) when I go uphill between 34 - 39 mph. This is due to a transmission problem where the car thinks it is going at a different speed/rpm than it actually is, and tries to "adjust" by "downshifting." What happens is a loss of power plus that awful noise unless I really floor the gas pedal to give more power. Now here is where it gets nasty: I took it to the dealer and it requires a 5 day wait to get the parts from Isuzu. They are willing to give me a loaner while they fix it (minimum 2 -3 days fixing time) but ONLY once it is in the shop under repair, and since they haven't gotten the part in yet, they don't want to accept the car. The reason this is bad is that I was told it is fine for local driving, but that it wouldn't be a good idea to drive the car long distances since the transmission theoretically could lock up. Unfortunately I need to drive to NY this weekend so I am still working on their supplying us with a rental car so I don't have to pay for one. Also forgot to mention that if I drive on city streets, if I keep the car in 3rd gear, it is fine even when going uphill @ those mph; it only makes the noise when the car is in "drive." The tech said that this is a MAJORIFIC fix. They basically have to tear apart the entire transmission to get to the parts that need replacing - he was worried that they might have to replace the whole transmission if tearing it apart proved too difficult. Fortunately this is not *my* problem! But I am disturbed that this car left the factory with the defect - this has been happening almost since day 1, but it took me awhile before I was systematically able to reproduce the problem for an accurate diagnosis. Will let you know how it goes. If anyone wants to try to reproduce the problem in their own truck: drive up a hill between 34 - 39 mph, putting your foot on the gas pedal only lightly.
