Buying a car from a Hyundai Car Dealer
I paid $18600 OTD (incl $3,500 C4C) for my 09 LTD w/Nav & bluetooth, mud flaps, cargo net, cargo tray. The price included PA tax, title docs everything. Dealers are still charging the same price w/ rebates as before the CARS program, the rule of thumb is $600-800 below Edmunds invoice price. The dealer I got mine from has only 18 LTDs left as opposed to the 68 he had when I bought mine 11 days ago. The only dealer I know (in my area) who advertises real prices online is www.manassashyundai.com. Before you get too excited, add the following to the web price $349 proc fees, $720 freight. Most ads out there claiming to sell you an Altima or Accord LX for under $13000 w/ CARS rebate are just that - FAKE, designed lure you in. I used Edmunds "request a quote" service and forced local dealers to give me an OTD price via e-mail before I went in. 3 out 5 complied the other two I blocked using my e-mail's spam filter. I got really fedup with utterly arrogant Honda and Toyota dealers in my area (North East). One Honda dealer that has the worst prices and even worse customer service told me, "these are Hondas, you don't need to test drive them, you're lucky that we've a sale this week, so you can buy one at sticker price. Let me know which one you want and I will get the paperwork for you to sign." He would not even walk me to a car to show, let alone test drive it. I wrote to Honda about my experience and never got a reply back. I thought if that's how the company treats prospective buyers, what will they do to me if I bought one. So, I started looking around for alternate family Sedans and discovered the Sonata which was rated higher than the Camry, Accord, and Altima in overall value and reliability by MotorTrend and Consumer Reports. BTW, this is only true starting with the 2007 model that the Sonata started to get the higher accolades. I priced out comparable Camry, Accord, Altima, and Mazda 6. All of them were $4000-6500 higher then the Sonata LTD.
I was able to purchase a 2008 Dark Bronze Veracruz AWD Limited (w/cross rails, carpeted floor mats, and trunk tray) in NE PA a month ago. At that time there were only 2 Dark Bronze on the entire East Coast - don't know where the other one was, or if more have become available. Love the vehicle. Although I got a good price on the actual vehicle, I am not happy with the dealership as it outright lied to us about our trade-in and refused to do anything about it after they were caught in their lie. I will be using a diff. dealership for my service.
This is my first Hyundai. I got it under contract 5/17/08, and took delivery 5/24/08. I visited two dealer. The first one is not good. Low inventory and only interested to sell me what is on the lot. The second one has slightly more inventory (though not exactly what I want), but in the end I have a deal with them since they are willing to go out and locate a VC I want at a acceptable price. Otherwise, I would call and probably drive 120 miles to the Maryland dealer others has mentioned in this forum. ----------------- MSRP Invoice Standard GLS AWD- 28600 27134 Premium Package-- 1950 1775 Carpeted floor mat 125 100 First Aid Kit----- 20 16 Vehicle Price----- 30695 29025 Advertising------- 0 150 Desitnation charge 695 695 Total------------- 31390 29870 Hyundai insentive- -1000 Discount (off invoice) -1270 Net Saleing Price 27600 tax 6% 1656 Document 125 Out of door payment 29381 Pacifico Hyundai (Pacifico Auto Group), Philadelphia, PA It is good to find out a reasonable dealer in town instead of driving to Maryland. I want a deep blue GLS AWD with Premium package (since my wife want moon roof but Not leather seat). They found one (claimed to be the only one in entire east coast). This blue exterior comes with gray interior cloth, althought the premium package does add some leather and wood here and here, in a pleasant way. So far I have 1000 mile on it, mostly highway. The interior layout is clean. The ride and accelaration is okay (it does not compare to my VW Passat 1.8T sedan though). Altough the gas milage is a pain comparing to sedan, as a family of four, we do need a vehicle to accomadate more than 5 people from time to time. At other time, VC's luggage space is useful. I just went a trip to JFK and get 4 passengers, 6 checking-in luggages. Costco shopping trip is very easy. Now considering add bluetooth to it. Possibly a GPS w/ backup camera.
Go to Towne Hyundai's (NJ) web site. Search the forums for Towne Hyundai as well. I have no experience to back it up, but posters here say it is the real deal. Their "doc fee" is (at least was) $189. If local SW Ohio Hyundai dealers would match their offering within $500 I'll buy local but I've had no luck getting that close of a quote previously on 08's. A trip east is no problem as family is in PA and I head that direction half-way fairly frequently. Some here suggest buying in the MD-DC-VA area as well, but I can't say I've seen it better or more certain that the Towne deals. I keep reading though. When one buys, ignorance is the kiss of death. Read all those "buyer's remorse" postings here. Two times I've purchased new cars since 2001; once I received 35% off sticker and another time almost 40%. These were GM models though and I had GM credit card rebates in addition to the highest manufacturer's incentives. Not that I expect to get that kind of deal, but the point is to maximize your knowledge to where you cannot make a bad decision. On an 04 Silhouette the sticker was $29435 - negotiated $26800 (included "fees" - probably could have been better) - rebates were $6000 - card rebates were $3100 - a $17700 price before TTT. There were reasons for this deal though (Oldsmobile!) and the 09 Sonata is a superior quality vehicle that will be an excellent buy at significantly less discount. I have been considering a purchase since Jul 07 when the deals were "too good to be true" on 07's. 08 deals have been even better. I suspect that once 08's are all but gone and 09's are in mass quantity with the US factory cranking them out in a continued "buyers" market, the 09 deals will build to a crescendo again. Remember they shut down the Alabama line for a week or two in October 07 because they oversupplied themslves. The 09 is a better car whereas the 08 was essentially the 07 with minor changes in trimline offerings. 5 speed auto with the improved I4 engine! Improved interior! The base price increase is justified given the new offerings IMO. I'm going to still sit out for a little while longer, but I'll be paying attention routinely right here at this forum!
Here are my opinions from my car buying experience- 1) Pacifico Hyundai (Philadelphia, PA) - This is the place where I bought the car from, so needless to say, I was pretty happy with the way they treated me. We finalized on the price before I entered the showroom and no undue pressure was put on me to make a deal. Initially, I was not happy with the test drive since I could hear some dull sound at the back; but they fixed it by replacing the rear tires and I did not hear the sound at the time of the second test drive. Overall, everything went smoothly. :) 2) Freysinger Hyundai (Mechanicsburg, PA) - The salesman was extremely helpful and he took out a lot of time to talk with me and answer my queries. He was vry patient with me and did not try to push me to buy. I would have bought the car from him if he had my desired configuration in stock. 3) Harrisburg Hyundai (Harrisburg, PA) - These guys were classic bait-and-switchers. They tell you on the phone that they have the desired configuration in stock but when you get there, it has suddenly been sold in the past few minutes but you can buy something else. Please don't play games like this! 4) Jack Giambalvo Hundai (York, PA) - The salesman was pretty straightforward with me on the phone and told me what he had and didn't have. He had the desired configuration in stock but it was a service loaner. I told him that I wasn't interested and that was the end of the story. 5) Lancaster County Motors (East Petersburg, PA) - The internet salesperson was a pretty sweet lady who megotiated with me on the phone but was straightforward enough to tell me that there was a number she could not go below. It was a pleasant experience dealing with them but they couldn't match the price I was looking for. 6) Savage Auto Group (Reading, PA) - There's one thing about being unwilling to negotiate, but its another thing when you're being downright rude to the customer. The salesperson herself was fine, but when I asked them how long a service loaner had been on the lot, her boss told me - 4 years! I guess it was his way of telling me F*** off 7) Sussman Auto (Willow Grove, PA) - They were pretty civil to deal with but they didn't have my desired configuration in stock. They definitely need to update their databases though; even though I had informed them 3 times that I have bought the car and they should take me off their list, they continued to send me email reminders. 8) Fitzgerald Auto Mall (Gaithesburg, MD) - These guys were great to deal with; no games and everything out in the open. If I had lesser time on my hands and had no interest in negotiating with different people, I would have definitely bought from them. The only funny thing was that dealers in PA were offering me a $2000 rebate but MD dealers were able to offer only $1000. 9) Thompson Automotive (Baltimore, MD) - Again, no wastage of time and an overall great experience. Their price was the lowest of all at $25,603 (That is with only $1000 rebate) and I could see myself buying through them had I not thrown in the towel for around $150 more! 10) Ettleston Hyundai (Countryside, IL) - These guys were pretty clear about the fact that they did not have my configuration in stock. As with other dealers in a similar position, they offered to get the exact configuration from a different dealer, but I know that then their capacity to negotiate is limited. 11) Loren Hyundai (Glenview, IL) - These guys never returned my emails! 12) McGrath City Hyundai (Chicago, IL) - They were pretty aggressive but never in a negative way. They made it clear that they wanted my business and would be willing to negotiate on price to do so. In the end, they didn't have my required configuration in stock. 13) Antwerpen Hyundai (Baltimore, MD) - Never bothered to return my emails. 14) Bob Bell Hyundai (Glen Burnie, MD) - After a number of email exchanges, I finally got the message from them that they did not have my desired configuration in stock. Wasted quite some time going back and forth. 15) Porter Auto Group (Newark, DE) - Were unwilling to go down on price 16) Napleton Hyundai (Chicago, IL) - The salesman was pretty nice about spending a lot of time with me and answering my questions. They did not, however, have my config. in stock. 17) Castle Hyundai (Newcastle DE) - Did not have the config. in stock and tried to sell me others that they did have in stock. Wasn't unpleasant dealing with them though. 18) Ohare Hyundai (Des Plaines, IL) - Were unwilling to go down on price 19) Howard Auto Group (Elmhurst, IL) - Did not have my config. in stock. 20) Global Auto Mall (North Plainfield, NJ) - Did not have config. in stock and called me repeatedly to try to get me in for a testdrive. 21) Turnersville Auto Mall (Turnersville, NJ) - Never got back to me on my earlier enquiry. 22) Gurnee Hyundai (Gurnee, IL) - Did not have my desired config. in stock and tried to get me in for something else, but was quite polite about it.
