Bought a 2009 Santa Fe SE FWD Today in NJ
by counselor4444 on Sat Aug 08 15:04:42 PDT 2009
I'm a very detail and research oriented person and probably contacted 40 dealerships in NJ/NY/PA/CT/MA/DE/MD area to find the best prices. I gathered all the information I needed, including invoice prices, rebates, and dealer cash before going into the dealerships so they would know up front that I knew all of the price info. I knew exactly what I wanted to pay based on the internet prices we received. We were up front that we were not eligible for the loyalty/college grad/military/cash for clunkers rebates. We also already had our own financing outside of Hyundai. We began our day at Maxon Hyundai in Union, NJ. We had received a good internet price (MSRP: $25,770, Internet price: $21,5 incl destination) and they had indicated that they had the model we wanted in stock. We arrived and were eventually told that they did not have what we wanted. (even though their email said differently) They tried to sell us a SE AWD that we did not want for invoice minus manuf rebate minus an additional $1500. They told us they could get the less expensive SE FWD we wanted but they would only take the manf rebate off the invoice with no other discounts. We did not have any further with discussions and left. We next went to Global Auto Mall in Plainfield, NJ. We did not have an internet price from them but had been told this morning that they had what we wanted in stock (even down to the color we wanted). We got there and found out that they had SE FWD but not in the blue color we wanted. They showed us a red SE FWD. We were then told that they could get what we wanted through a dealer locate. I gave the salesman my shtick- i've spoken with 40 dealerships, seen X prices, know about the rebates/dealer cash. He came back with a print out of the exact vehicle we wanted which he would have to get from another dealership and a high price. (I knew this would start "the negotiation game") I gave him a low ball price in return. He came back and told us that they could sell it to us for a little under $21K. He then refused to commit to a number. The head sales manager came over and said to us, i understand you have looked at a lot of dealerships and I do not think you are serious about making a deal so you should go and look elsewhere. (is this guy serious?) Then the head salesman says, we can sell it for 21K. We agreed to take it and then our salesman comes back and says that they won't do it for the blue vehicle they would have to locate and they would only do it for the red SE FWD on the lot (even though the negotiation was only for the dealer locate vehicle) We were pretty angry at this point (1 hr later) and left in a fury. Outside, I asked my husband to consider the red one on the lot as it was a good price, and we went back and asked to see the red one again. I warned the salesman, if this is one penny over 21K, we will leave and will not come back. He said not to worry it was a done deal and that we were getting an even better deal b/c it had bluetooth (which the blue one did not). We go back inside and he goes to get the contract and comes back and says that the sales manager wants more money for extra options now. We got up and left. We honestly believe that our salesman had no idea this was going to happen and seemed just as angry as us that the sales manager had gone back on what he offered. Be warned: our salesman (Kelvin) was very polite, but the head sales manager was not and deceptive business practices are used. The sales manager changed prices on us twice after committing to the prices offered. I do not recommend buying from them. We then went to Hackettstown Hyundai in Hackettstown, NJ. Jerry was our salesman. We had received another good internet price from then (21,5) They told me on the phone they had the colors we wanted, and did. No unethical sales practices, no changes of price, only professionalism here. We negotiated the price down from MSRP $25,770 (SE FWD with mats, incl destination charge) to $21,250 plus tax, title, registration, etc. We believe that we got a very good deal. We will pick it up on Mon or Tues and I will post another review then. Yay!
Re: Looking for a good Dealer, price & everything. [natalicious]

I purchased a 2009 Sonata Limited yesterday with sunroof, heated leather seats, touchscreen nav unit etc for $6,900 under sticker price from Brad Benson. I was also looking to buy a used (2007/08) Sonata, but they have great rebates going on - $2000 for everyone, addl $1500 if you or a family member currently owns a Hyundai. The dealership on Rt-22 has an additional $2000 rebate. Here's what I advice: 1. Decide about the exact year, model, trim and optional features you want. 2. Test-drive the car at any dealership. Tell them up front that you are not looking to buy today, but if you like the car you'll come back to the same salesman. Decide on the exact car you want. 3. Get email quotes from Brad Benson, Sansone (Rt-1 Avenel) and Global Auto Mall (Rt-22 North Plainfield) - using edmonds.com or cars.com. The other two gave me email quotes. 4. Ask the dealers to match each others' quotes for the Out The Door price (base + 7% sales tax + dest charge around $700 + DMV titling and registration and doc fees around $200) 4.5 Get financing BEFORE going to the dealership. 5. GO IN to Brad Benson and ask for the "Internet sales manager". Folks that do their research on the internet are perceived to be well-informed and it's easier to get a great deal that way. 6. Negotiate hard. Tell them you are ready to buy TODAY (and you should be). Talk about the out the door price and no other price. Tell them you'll walk out if they add a single fee to the negotiated price. Read up on edmonds.com, especially "confessions of a car salesman". Stick to your figure until the salesman brings in the sales manager. When you increase your price, do it in small increments, e.g. if you start from $20,000; say $20,200; $20,300; 20,350 - keep reducing the increment amount. 7. Your greatest asset will be your willingness to walk out if the price doesn't seem right. They will tell you that the price won't be available next time you come in - never mind. This is a bad time for dealerships and they will do whatever they can to sell cars. 8. Brad Benson is the third largest hyundai dealership in the country - that gives them more wiggle room to give you a good deal. Regarding your other questions: - I got a 4-cyl... this is a family sedan, not a hot rod. The mpg difference is negligible, but the V6 costs about $2000 more. - DO NOT buy out of state. When you bring it in to NJ, you'll have to pay the sales tax difference anyway, plus you will have to go to the DMV yourself for titling and registration. If you get a new car, the dealer will take care of this for you. Good luck!
Purchased 2007 Limited FWD
by songbird54 on Tue Dec 18 17:55:32 PST 2007
Purchased last month $20,864 $1,461.81 tax $354.00 title and reg $289.00 doc fee (whatever) $19.00 credit inquiry $7.50 tire tax $22,995 OTD ZERO percent finance for 72 months (cant be beat!!) plus a portable navigation unit I purchased at Global Auto Mall in N Plainfield, NJ and had a great experience there. The people were fantastic through the whole process. I know the Tucson is not as popular as the Santa Fe, but it is really fun to drive, I love the V6 and the height plus all the safety features. I hope the MPG improves. I expected 22-23 for my mixed driving, but so far I am getting 19.4.
Experience with different dealers in PA and other states
by nikunash on Sun Nov 04 15:11:59 PST 2007
Here are my opinions from my car buying experience- 1) Pacifico Hyundai (Philadelphia, PA) - This is the place where I bought the car from, so needless to say, I was pretty happy with the way they treated me. We finalized on the price before I entered the showroom and no undue pressure was put on me to make a deal. Initially, I was not happy with the test drive since I could hear some dull sound at the back; but they fixed it by replacing the rear tires and I did not hear the sound at the time of the second test drive. Overall, everything went smoothly. :) 2) Freysinger Hyundai (Mechanicsburg, PA) - The salesman was extremely helpful and he took out a lot of time to talk with me and answer my queries. He was vry patient with me and did not try to push me to buy. I would have bought the car from him if he had my desired configuration in stock. 3) Harrisburg Hyundai (Harrisburg, PA) - These guys were classic bait-and-switchers. They tell you on the phone that they have the desired configuration in stock but when you get there, it has suddenly been sold in the past few minutes but you can buy something else. Please don't play games like this! 4) Jack Giambalvo Hundai (York, PA) - The salesman was pretty straightforward with me on the phone and told me what he had and didn't have. He had the desired configuration in stock but it was a service loaner. I told him that I wasn't interested and that was the end of the story. 5) Lancaster County Motors (East Petersburg, PA) - The internet salesperson was a pretty sweet lady who megotiated with me on the phone but was straightforward enough to tell me that there was a number she could not go below. It was a pleasant experience dealing with them but they couldn't match the price I was looking for. 6) Savage Auto Group (Reading, PA) - There's one thing about being unwilling to negotiate, but its another thing when you're being downright rude to the customer. The salesperson herself was fine, but when I asked them how long a service loaner had been on the lot, her boss told me - 4 years! I guess it was his way of telling me F*** off 7) Sussman Auto (Willow Grove, PA) - They were pretty civil to deal with but they didn't have my desired configuration in stock. They definitely need to update their databases though; even though I had informed them 3 times that I have bought the car and they should take me off their list, they continued to send me email reminders. 8) Fitzgerald Auto Mall (Gaithesburg, MD) - These guys were great to deal with; no games and everything out in the open. If I had lesser time on my hands and had no interest in negotiating with different people, I would have definitely bought from them. The only funny thing was that dealers in PA were offering me a $2000 rebate but MD dealers were able to offer only $1000. 9) Thompson Automotive (Baltimore, MD) - Again, no wastage of time and an overall great experience. Their price was the lowest of all at $25,603 (That is with only $1000 rebate) and I could see myself buying through them had I not thrown in the towel for around $150 more! 10) Ettleston Hyundai (Countryside, IL) - These guys were pretty clear about the fact that they did not have my configuration in stock. As with other dealers in a similar position, they offered to get the exact configuration from a different dealer, but I know that then their capacity to negotiate is limited. 11) Loren Hyundai (Glenview, IL) - These guys never returned my emails! 12) McGrath City Hyundai (Chicago, IL) - They were pretty aggressive but never in a negative way. They made it clear that they wanted my business and would be willing to negotiate on price to do so. In the end, they didn't have my required configuration in stock. 13) Antwerpen Hyundai (Baltimore, MD) - Never bothered to return my emails. 14) Bob Bell Hyundai (Glen Burnie, MD) - After a number of email exchanges, I finally got the message from them that they did not have my desired configuration in stock. Wasted quite some time going back and forth. 15) Porter Auto Group (Newark, DE) - Were unwilling to go down on price 16) Napleton Hyundai (Chicago, IL) - The salesman was pretty nice about spending a lot of time with me and answering my questions. They did not, however, have my config. in stock. 17) Castle Hyundai (Newcastle DE) - Did not have the config. in stock and tried to sell me others that they did have in stock. Wasn't unpleasant dealing with them though. 18) Ohare Hyundai (Des Plaines, IL) - Were unwilling to go down on price 19) Howard Auto Group (Elmhurst, IL) - Did not have my config. in stock. 20) Global Auto Mall (North Plainfield, NJ) - Did not have config. in stock and called me repeatedly to try to get me in for a testdrive. 21) Turnersville Auto Mall (Turnersville, NJ) - Never got back to me on my earlier enquiry. 22) Gurnee Hyundai (Gurnee, IL) - Did not have my desired config. in stock and tried to get me in for something else, but was quite polite about it.

We paid $30,074 (OTD including all fees... tax, tags, destination, dealer prep, etc.) for a Platinum Sage (beige interior) AWD Limited w/ Premium & Touring Pkgs from Global Auto Mall on Route 22 in North Plainfield, NJ. I'm pretty happy with the price considering the sales tax in NJ is 7%, plus registration & tags on a new vehicle in NJ costs $352 (the good news though is that the car doesn't need to be inspected/registered again until 2010). - Frank.
