'06 Elantra GLS (w/ package 02 "premium package")
by infinityplus1 on Mon Jul 31 23:23:08 PDT 2006
This is my first post but I have been reading through this thread and a few others. I submitted requests for quotes, over the Net, to four different dealers in my area (Metro Detroit). Lafontaine Hyundai (Dearborn, MI) was the quickest to reply so I made a trip there and worked with their Internet Sales person. Once they ran my credit check I was passed over to the Sales Manager. The MSRP I was given for a '06 Elantra GLS 4 dr AT w/ 02 premium package (sunroof, ABS, etc) was $16715. That seemed a bit high to me. Hyundai's website has the MSRP as: $15,495 The out the door price was $15,278 (after $1,000 rebate) and I would have gotten a 6.5% APR. We had initially discussed the GLS Base model and the out the door given to me was $14,108. In both cases the prices were approx $1,500 - $2,000 more than Edmunds TMV listed. I even had the Edmonds TMV sheet printed out and brought it with me. I spent about 30 minutes with the Sales Manager and asked him a couple of times if he could do any better on the starting price. He ended up dropping it by $200, which got me to the OTD price I first listed ($15,278) Edmonds TMV for '06 Elantra GLS (w/ package 02) -$1,000 rebate: $14,550 OTD Lafontaine Hyundai OTD price for same car: $15,278 Difference: $728 I ended up thanking him for his time and walking, with the possibility of contacting him tomorrow to see if Hyundai has come out with any new incentives on the Elantra. My main question is why would the MSRP have been so high? Are they just marking that up to begin with? Also it seems, from reading this thread, that many people are getting the same car or very similar for several thousand less. Is it the area that I am in that is the reason for the higher price or am I reading the prices listed here incorrectly. Some other trivial info: Doc fee was $169 or $139. He mentioned that his Holdback was $449. MI sales tax is 6%. Was I being given a good deal or was I right in walking for now? Thanks for any input.
