If you get prices from a few dealers and feel happy with the price paid then you got a good deal. Availability of cars with the particular options wanted can have an affect on the price. In my case I was going to get a 4 cyl (to do my part on conservation) and wanted NAV. I had just utilized a portable GPS and thought it worked out great. The only drawback with the portable is removing and hiding it it at every stop. The dealer I dealt with was in Elmhurst IL (suburb of Chicago). I dreaded going in to complete the deal but was pleasantly surprised. The dealer didn't try to change the price, add a bunch of crap, or try to renegotiate the price. Except he did say he had to ask if I wanted an extended warranty and if not no problem. He stated he was required by the dealership to ask. There was absolutely no pressure and everyone treated me like a VIP. It was the best car buying experience I had in 40 years. BTW your deal looks pretty good as a 6 Cyl is a bit more than a 4 Cyl.

Sales tax in Chicago just went over 10% on July 1. All Cook county is now like 9%. Highest in nation and you can't avoid it if you buy a car because the dealership has to charge the tax rate on your residence....not where you buy the car. If you buy out of state you pay no tax until you register in IL then they collect the sales tax on where you reside. I don't live in Cook county but I feel for them on auto purchases. BTW, that was an excellent price you got on the GLS auto.

I'm assuming I would pay the local tax and then register the car in my home state? Don't assume anything. States are different. For example, if you buy a car in Wisconsin but live in Illinois you pay no tax at purchase but pay your applicable Illinois sales tax when you apply for IL title and tags. Some states collect your states sales tax and forward a check to your state. There are many different iterations. Suffice to say that your state will get their sales tax dollars one way or another. I've never heard a case where you pay the state's sales tax where you buy it though. It's not like buying a microwave.

Did you pay MSRP, less any rebate, or did you check around or negotiate to get the best price possible? No, I paid invoice, or just slightly less and then subtracted the $1,500 rebate. That was the best internet quote I could find in my area (Chicago). I think it's funny that some people here think they make more money off of used cars, than new. Anyways, they gave me $20k for my TBSS on the trade. Honda offered me $18k and Toyota $17.5k. The dealer is now trying to get $22k for it (good luck!). I had it listed for a while for that exact same price on AutoTrader. I only received calls from brokers wanting to sell it for me. BTW, them giving me $20k was like getting $21.6k when you figure in my tax savings. I was only taxed on a little over 2 grand. :)
2007 Sonata Used

Regarding the previous posts - I really think all dealerships are sketchy in some way, that's just the way it is. Here's my recent purchase: I live in Chicago and this weekend I bought a 2007 Sonata with all the fixin's except sunroof (woodtrim, steering wheel controls, cruise etc...). Purchase price was $14,300 before TTL - car has 6400 miles. I love it and feel like I got a good deal, however the dealership, like most, was trying to grind me down for every extra penny they could get. I bought the car from Patrick Hyundai in Schaumburg, IL. All these places play games - after we settled on price they told me that they only had one set of keys. If I wanted a second set (of course I did) it would cost $6 for the key and an additional $212 for the keyless entry remote (100 for remote and 112 for the programming of the remote). I almost walked out - I threw a fit and basically called them out on that B.S. tactic although I ended up paying $56 for the extra key (guy said he would give me the remote for free and 'split the cost' of the programming). I know this was all B.S. and I could have probably got it all for free but at that point I just wanted to close the deal up. Their whole mission is to wear you down, grinding you out for every penny. So that's my story - I love the car it drives like a dream. I hate dealing with salesmen though, it's the only part that makes buying a car a bit painful.
Bought a Sonata today - $14,998 + TTL
by b612markt on Tue Mar 18 20:36:12 PDT 2008
I'm a FIRST TIME car buyer - and I did a heck of a lot of research and it all really paid off today. Here's my experience. I spent about 4 weeks using email only to contact about 33 Hyundai dealers in IL, IN, MN and WI (I live in Chicago.) To keep the comparison shopping apples-to-apples I asked each dealer to provide their best price for a 2008 Sonata GLS Auto 4cylinder with Package 1 (no sunroof) and no demos. After I had 5 dealers with great prices (all under 16k) I started calling them one by one to get them to beat their competitors prices. After a week of this, I got a price of $14,998 for this exact car from O'Connor Hyundai in IL and Denny Hecker's Hyundai in MN. Sticker price was $20,195. $14,998 is $5197 less than that! The guy at O'Connor told me that this was the actual cost that the dealer pays for the car. Whether or not this is true - it was a heck of a deal! The closest dealers to me were Rogers Hyundai and O'Hare Hyundai, so I wanted to see if they could match that price. I went to Rogers Hyundai and drove a Sonata and the Salesman was extremely friendly, but the best they could do was $15,900. Sorry guys, I don't want to pay $902 extra! I called O'Hare and they agreed to the $14,998 price. I emailed the internet salesman to make sure I had everything in writing, and he responded in the affirmative. I drove out to the dealer this afternoon and another incredibly knowledgeable salesman showed my partner and I the three Sonatas they had in my configuration (08, 4cyl, GLS, pack1, auto, not a demo). Two were in colors we didn't like and they had one in black - our favorite! After the test drive, we went inside, I showed him the email from the internet salesman and he drew up the paperwork with the $14,998 price. Then we waited for an hour while the loan guy ran our credit and prepared the financing paperwork and we enjoyed their free coffee free wifi. The financing was blessedly painless. We were approved for the price of the car and we chose to put $2K down. We accepted Gap insurance (additional $595) but declined additional warranties (Wrap coverage is what they call it) and insurance that pays off the car if you die (morbid!). There was no pressure to accept the extra things ever. Doc fees were $150. The greatest thing was that they had real plates there at the dealership and they put them on then and there (no paper plates and coming back to the dealer in 3 weeks for the metal ones!) While we were signing all the paperwork, I opened up my MacBook, went to Progressive.com and resumed a saved insurance quote I had already configured the day before. All I had to do was add the VIN and the lenders name, and I clicked "Buy Now" and was insured instantly ($403 for 6 months). I clicked a few more buttons and 30 seconds later the Loan Officer's fax machine beeped as our proof of insurance came in. He was pretty stunned! After we finished all the financial paperwork we met back with the salesman who gave us our keys, operation manual, etc... He took us out to the car which had just been washed, had all the protective plastic removed and had a half tank of gas. He really took his time explaining all the features of the car. I thought it would be a waste of time, but there were a few I wasn't aware of like the multi featured trip computer, trunk lock/unlock interior switch and 60/40 seatback locks. We drove off happy with our new purchase and filled with feelings of good-will towards everyone at O'Hare Hyundai and Hyundai in general for making such an awesome car! :)
