picked up white elantra gls with preferred package + cargo tray, net and carpet mats. base : 18500 7% tax 156 doc fee 190 Title/Licence plates $20166 OTD. This was family hyundai @tinley park, IL.. could have saved another couple hundred at other dealerships but they would put on wait list. these guys had in stock the color i wanted and i couldn't wait any further.. overall happy with purchase. just in case if anyone in chicago area is looking, they had another elantra limited with tech package in showroom.

Re: Hyundai Elantra Choice [jabcola] by fushigi on Wed Oct 12 11:37:58 PDT 2011

I don't see any of those as bad choices. All three are IIHS Top Safety picks. The Focus & Elantra are newer designs and feature much improved fuel economy over the Mazda. Ford & Hyundai give you 6 speed ATs v. the Mazda's 5. When my wife was car shopping last month, she was considering fairly loaded cars. When we compared, a loaded Focus was a decent bit more expensive than the Elantra Limited. Ultimately she bought a '12 Elantra Limited w/Tech. We live in the western 'burbs so I know your pain WRT Chicago area roads & winters. In fact, I just took delivery on a snowthrower a couple of hours ago.

Re: WeatherTech Floor Mats [p6r2h4] by fushigi on Mon Sep 26 14:36:01 PDT 2011

I have their mats for my Outlander. As I live in the snow/slush belt (Chicago area) I use the WeatherTechs in winter & the regular carpeted mats in summer. I find they do a very good job of keeping snow & slush from getting to the surrounding carpet. They have cutouts that fit the OEM mat hooks so they don't slide around and are deep enough that any liquid doesn't get over the sides. If the mats for your car are "DigitalFit" then they'll fit perfectly, and that's what I see on their site for the '12 Sonata interior mats. The cargo liner for the trunk, if you were considering it, appears to not be DigitalFit so some trimming may be required. That seems to be the case with most cars. Also, if you live in the Chicago area, you can go their to pick up the liners yourself; just call ahead to make sure they're in stock. They're in Downers Grove.

Re: 2011/2012 Insurance costs? [wlbrown9] by fushigi on Thu Sep 22 12:22:33 PDT 2011

Yeah, you might want to check around. We don't have umbrella coverage but otherwise we're paying something around $2900/year for 2 cars (full coverage, 240 deduct, glass/rental) + home (w/jewelry riders). Chicago suburbs, Farmers Insurance, cars billed together, HO paid via escrow.

2) Any complications to buying a car out of state? If I'm not mistaken WI looks like it has lower sales tax than in Chicago (around 10%). So here's a complication. If you buy a car out of state, that does not negate your obligation to pay your state's sales tax. When you go to register the car in Illinois you'll be required to pay IL sales tax (at your local rate, not just the state rate). Many dealers in neighboring states can collect the right tax for you, but if they don't then you're on the hook for it. (And if the dealer doesn't collect it for you then you have to come up with it out of pocket & can't roll it into any financing.) Which also means that if you buy in, say, Wisconsin, and they don't charge IL sales tax for you then they'll instead charge WI sales tax (again, depends on the dealer). So you'll have to apply to the WI gov't to get that sales tax refunded. If more than 60 or 90 days (something like that) goes by then the sales tax point is moot but unless you can register in the one state & later re-register in Illinois then the sales tax thing will bite you. I live in the 'burbs outside of Cook County and did not enjoy at all paying over 7% in sales tax back in late '09. It isn't easily avoided. You might check non-Cook County dealers to see if they charge your sales tax rate or their own. Dropping from Chicago's 9.75% to, say, 7.75% in a collar county would save $400 on a $20K car purchase.
