Since tax and license can't be negotiated, I always suggest keeping them out of the negotiating process. They should simply be added on at the very end, once a purchase agreement has been reached. As I've posted here dozens of times before, negotiate your purchase price first. These days, you should be able to buy a 2007 Santa Fe for $1000 - $1500 under invoice with no problem. These numbers are BEFORE factoring in rebates, taxes, and registration fees. So, if a particular car has an M.S.R.P. of $29,975 and an invoice of $28,134, you should be able to buy it for somewhere between $26,634 and $27,134. ADD to that tax and registration. From that total SUBTRACT all rebates that you qualify for. (Rebates, taxes, and registration vary considerably from state-to-state. That's why it doesn't make sense to try to analyze whether a deal is good or bad if the only number we can see is the bottom line which takes them all into account. The only consistent basis for comparison is the initial purchase price, before factoring in those other variables.) One other thing - many dealers try to add things like "dealer fees", processing fees", etc. My advice is to simply tell them that you won't pay them. All they are is extra profit that they try to tack on after the deal is made. As for the so-called "advertising fees", these may be tougher to avoid. In most cases, the dealer actually does pay this money into an advertising co-op. Since you're negotiating from invoice (and not M.S.R.P.), the number is usually added to the invoice (which explains why the invoice shown by the dealer is sometimes higher than what's shown here ar Edmunds.com). Fitzmall, for example, pays $150/vehicle for advertising fees. If you compare their invoice pricing with Edmunds', you'll see a $150 difference every time. If you're negotiating a deal based on $XXX under invoice, it's reasonable to include the ad fees in the purchase price.

GLS/AWD WITH TOURING PACKAGE 33
by shc1 on Sun Mar 25 11:07:10 PDT 2007
MSRP was $28,080 plus appearance package (which I didn't want)for a total of $29,775. Included touring package, premium package, carpeted floor mats, and mud flaps, plus full tank of gas. After rebates and trade-in I paid a total of $21,693. I did the finance thing but will pay that off without penalty ASAP. The vehicle was hard to come by, as I wanted all of the above bells and whistles, but I did not want leather seats, and I had a specific color I wanted as well. The dealer searched the entire country, as most with all of the options I wanted automatically have the leather seats. My trade in was a '99 Quest, 120,000 miles, not in the best of shape. Kent Dobbs Hyundai in NW Arkansas worked very hard for me...good people. They are located in Springdale, AR, and soon will be opening another lot in Bentonville, AR. Their service department is top rated, as is their customer service.
Just purchased 2003 Sante fe 3.5 LX 2wd by cadillacjoe

Sounds like you got a great deal! Congratulations. I wish I could have waited until the end of the model year to get a great deal, but I didn't want to take the chance that "my" Santa Fe would still be there. It was pretty much a one-of-a-kind on the lot with gold plated trim.

$19,000 for a 2002 model is ridiculous, even if it is new. You can get a 2003 model for the same price as it is the end of the model year and most dealers have a lot of aging inventory to move. I personally wouldn't pay more than $16,500 for a brand new 2002 model, and that is assuming it is in mint condition and not a dealer program car. Check out eBay motors and see what new/used Santa Fe vehicles are going for.

The only problem with waiting until December is there may be less to choose from. The deals get great when the model years changes (end of October) and though they do get better the older the inventory gets, they don't get THAT much better. They won't sell the car at a loss just because it is last year's model. The Lx trim package keeps you from having to put your vehicle together piecemeal. I think you could save a couple hundred dollars if you got the GLS and just had them add everything on to it, but when it comes time to resell the vehicle you can't call it an 'Lx', but just a GLS with options added on. Personally, I think if you want the goodies, get them up front with the Lx package. The wood trim is, of course, plastic. The factory 'wood' trim looks sharp though and adds distinction. I put aftermarket trim on mine, and though it is real wood, the way it is put in (adhesive vs. built in OEM) gives it a cheesy look if you put it under the microscope. Fortunately, most anybody that rides in my car doesn't look at the trim very carefully and they are impressed by the look. Hope this helps your decision!
