Re: Just bought a Pilot in Portland OR [fxcoach] by lawrencej on Sun Jun 25 18:29:47 PDT 2006

Honda dealers in Seattle said they would not sell new Hondas to residents of Canada. did you encounter any such problem in Oregon at Gresham Honda? Also did you wrap everything up on-line before you went down to pick it up? A little overview of your purchase would be appreciated. Thanks

Just bought a Pilot in Portland OR by fxcoach on Fri Jun 23 09:44:25 PDT 2006

I'm happy to report that yesterday I signed a deal for 2006 honda Pilot AWD EX-L with Navigation for $29,210.36 (including destination). The only extra charge was $50.00 processing fee. Being in Oregon ther is no state tax but I wouldn't have to pay it anyway since I'm taking it to Canada. It is actually manufactured in Canada (in May/2006 so it's not an old stock sitting on the lot). I bought from Gresham Honda which is in Gresham, Oregon about 10 miles from downtown Portland. I have done an extensive research over the last two months and got multiple quotes from dealers in the San Francisco area, Oregon and Washington. I got very good quotes from Cerrito in Oakland, CA but California has weird laws regarding the state tax, basically you have to pay it if you drive on their soil. To beat it you have to ship the car to over the state line. If you want to get good price don't bother with Seattle area dealers, they apparently get maximum $1500 incentive and won't even come close to the price I got in Oregon. If you don't want to go to Oregon (I drove down from Vancouver, BC, Canada) and still want to buy in the Seattle are I would recommend Bellevue Honda, they have huge selection of Pilots and are very accomodating which is not always the case. Another Seattle are dealer, after some phone conversations and e-mails, when presented with a low quote, had this to say "...Chatting with people online about prices they recieved (sic) from other dealers seems a little shady to me, but I guess you got to go where the deals supposedly are because somebody tells you to...". Needless to say, I didn't dignify it with an answer. If you want a GREAT price and OUTSTANDING customer survice I recommend Gresham Honda in Gresham, OR (suburb of Portland). I dealt with two person (male and female) and they were very straightforward from the start. It certainly was worth the extra drive beyond Seattle. Last but not least I want to thank creators of this forum, all the contributors, especially PAULg16 for all the help I got. Coming her first and getting educated before contacting the dealers saved me a lot of money and made this purchase a very pleasant and painless experience. Thanks again. :)

We bought our Ridgeline from LYNNWOOD HONDA thru the internet sales manager. AWESOME guy, very honest, smart & respectful. He used to be an editor for Auto Trader magazine. I would definitley purchase from him again. We also had good quotes from Gresham, OR and another dealer in Portland (Tonkin?? i think was the name?). What we did was get quotes through all those websites (Cars.com, Autos.com and Edmunds.com) for internet offers. We received quotes within the next day. And we did a lot of research to determine how to figure out dealer cost vs invoice cost vs MSRP to determine how to come up with a decent offer. I would NOT recommend working with Burien, Fife, or Bremerton. They started off nice enough, but once we started talking $$ they were rude & basically told us our offer was ridiculous. They said we'd come back to them in 6 months because we'd never find a price lower than $31k. HA! Well, we did...from multiple other dealers. My advice is to be willing to walk away from a dealer that won't discuss your price or go as low or below invoice. Just fax or email around and get price quotes from various dealers. Then forward the good ones onto other dealers. Our biggest problem was that we wanted the Steel Blue one & we wanted the Moonroof. There were only 3 in the WA, OR, ID area and 2 were loaded with accessories that we didn't want. If we'd wanted white or silver, we could have gotten better offers. Those seem to be sitting on lots everywhere. Do some research & you'll be able to know a good deal when you see it. And DON'T go to a dealership unprepared! Good Luck!

Today's newspaper offer was from Gresham Honda - and yes, Tonkin is often in another world.....
