Buying a car from a Honda Car Dealer

How good is my deal? by sofr310 on Sun Jan 06 05:46:36 PST 2008

I'm just recently buying a 2003 S2000. In fact I'll be signing the contract next Monday. I searched around for a while and found this deal. It's blue on blue, good condition (no scratches or dents on the exterior, broken antenna but the dealer will fix it for $25, and a very minor tear on the passenger door which they fix for $125, like new rims, about 65% left of tires life, clean engine, everything else looks very good). It's one owner. Mileage is 63,580. It was listed for $17,475 and I negotiated it down to $15,500. Is it a good deal? OK deal? Bad deal? It's my first manual car, first sport car, and most expensive car I've purchased so I'm a little nervous. +) Any input is appreciated. Thanks. P.S.: I'm from austin, texas.

Bought 2007 EX-L Today by gkchesterton on Tue Nov 27 15:15:57 PST 2007

All, After two days of concentrated emailing and negotiating (trying to beat the lapse of the $2500 incentive for 2007s), I bought an EX-L today. I first tried Autobytel, CarsDirect and Costco, before I discovered this forum and learned Donkey Punch Fu. Using DP Fu, I emailed 15 dealerships in a 60-mile radius, plus one about 95 miles away because I saw a post here that said the latter was offering an incredible price below $25,000 for an EX-L (that dealer made no such offer to me). Autobytel, CarsDirect and Costco could not touch the offers I got using DP Fu. Using DP Fu, I narrowed my search down to two dealers nearest my home. I could have gone with either and been satisfied, but I did prefer dealer 1 over dealer 2 because they were closer and I had prior good experience with their service dept. I got an OTD offer from dealer 2 that was among the best I received. I then took that price to dealer 1 and negotiated on a bottom-line OTD basis. Dealer 1's only in-stock '07 EX-L in the color I wanted already had fog lights and a moonroof visor installed. Those were accessories I would have bought anyway, so it was OK. When I negotiated with dealer 1 on a bottom-line OTD basis, the accessories were not separately broken-out. On the paperwork, however, the dealer itemized it this way. EX-L: $25,564 Fog Lights: $533 Moonroof Visor: $169 Tax: $1576 Title, Regis & Tags: $68 Processing & Misc Fees: $90 Total OTD: $28,000 The prices for the accessories seems really high; but as I say, we didn't negotiate that way and the price allocation between vehicle and accessories appears arbitrary. This may not be the best deal that can be had in the galaxy, but I am happy, especially considering what I might have settled for from Autobytel, CarsDirect or Costco if I hadn't discovered this forum and DP Fu. Thanks to all, but especially Donkey Punch. GKC The accessory prices seemed very high to me, but as I say, what I actually agreed to was the 28,000 bottom line, and the way the dealer allocated the breakdown seems arbitrary.

Bought Pilot 2WD EX-L, no nav, no dvd, today by vncoffman on Tue Apr 17 06:13:11 PDT 2007

Houston, TX, area. I hope my price was not terrible--needed to buy it quick and could not wait until end of month because the seat in my husband's old truck had broken down and it was hurting his back. Did not like buying new (for money reasons), but used ones were not enough off the new price to justify possibly buying someone else's problems, plus good used cars in a model that I want are hard to find. Initial quotes from dealers in the area ranged from $27,022 to $27,900. The ones in the middle were about $27,250 to about $27,500. The one who quoted $27,900 dropped to $27,000 when asked (but I didn't buy there because I like people who give me low quotes to begin with). The one who quoted $27,022 (the lowest initial price) said they had the color we wanted but then showed us a color we had said we *didn't* want when we came in, and said our color had been sold. We bought at Russell and Smith. They originally quoted me $200 above the price listed here, but dropped it when I mentioned other offers. They had two of the color we wanted, but there was a bit of a delay while they got one from another lot--wish the salesman had gone to get it when we called to say we were coming. Oh, well--once we got it and looked it over and test drove it, the rest of the process took a reasonable amount of time. The financial person was very nice. They offered us options, financing, etc. (which we didn't take), but they weren't pushy. 2007 PILOT EX-L $27,083.00 TAX $1692.68 INVENTORY TAX $67.70 DOCUMENT FEE $50.00 LICENSE FEE $72.30 TITLE FEE $33.00 INSPECTION FEE $21.75 TOTAL $29,020.44 (Driveout actually wound up being $29,017.something--slight arithmetic error in the initial quote, I guess. It came out lower, so that's OK.)

Re: New lease incentive on S2000 on Honda website [23109vc] by dwynne on Fri Apr 06 12:24:27 PDT 2007

It is hard to say. I think under track conditions the S bests the 8 and the 350z both from tests I have read. Neither the S or the 8 has any torque to speak of so you have to pay attention and drive it and keep the revs up. My wife and I go "riding" in the S when the weather is nice, we don't do that in the 8. While it is a fun car, it is not "lets just go riding" fun to us. Our kids are mostly all grown now (26, 18, 16) and all way too tall to sit behind me in the 8 and just BARELY able to sit one behind the other in the 8. If you are short(er) you could kit a kid behind you in the 8 - for sure in a car seat. There is no airbag cut off in either car (keep in mind I have 05s, so it may be different now) so you would not want to take small child in the front of either - and no car seats up there. You could fit two kids (of the right sizes) fore and aft in the passenger side with ease. I was driving a sedan, then started getting a nice day convertible as a second car (Miata M, c5 'vette, 01 S, 05 S). Once the gets got older and were getting cars of their own and since my wide has a new Accord, I settled on the 8 as my "sedan". Mostly just me, but room for more in a pinch. I was also keeping a snow day/bad weather car - a Scooby-Doo Legacy AWD wagon (hey, I had a c5 'vette convertible and an M5 - which would YOU drive in the snow?) but I got rid of it and got a Scion xB. I loved the design and they dropped it and re-did it (not nearly as cute). So that and 4 snows = snow day car, and a spare car for the rest of the family (I got the auto so anyone could drive it) and I have lots of room to carry folks and stuff if I need to. Hey, I even have a 14 year old T-100 pickup for trips to the dump and hauling stuff. The right tool for the job, that is my motto :D The 8 is a softer ride, but still gobs of road feel. The S even more feel but even rougher ride - but it rarely bothers me as the car is "tight" but I can see where it would put some off. What I did was to find a well used, broken in example of each and "test drive" the heck out of them before I purchased. You don't want to drive a new car that hard and it may not feel the same after some miles either. I decided I could live with both. With the weak reliability, poor mileage, and poor resale value it would be hard for me to recommend someone get a new 8. If you could get a left-over 06 for WAY under invoice or pick up a lightly used one (like mine) for cheap then it would be OK. The S is just more fun, super mileage for the performance, top down, better resale, better reliability and something I can recommend. But I don't have to drive yours or pay for it, you do :D Dennis

Re: 2006 Accord LX V6 - $21,000/- Good price? [carwala] by punchperm on Tue Jan 03 21:37:37 PST 2006

My experience at Planet Honda (Union, NJ) was not very good. First, I couldn't get a single salesperson to speak with me, even though there were plenty just standing around doing nothing and other people who walked in after me were getting plenty of attention. Maybe I looked cheap or poor, or both. Who knows? Either way, it was extremely obvious they were actively ignoring me, since two of them actually turned and walked away as I tried to approach them to get help. I eventually got a salesperson by waiting until one of them approached someone else and got rejected and then I jumped in so fast that he couldn't say he was busy since they had just offered to help someone else. Some example conversations I had with this salesman: First visit... Me: I'm not interested in buying today, only test driving the 2006 Accord LX-SE. Him: There is no SE this year. Me: Yes, there is. Him: No, there isn't. Me: Yes, there is. You might want to check your inventory. Him (long pause after looking it up): OK, let's go test drive it. .... Him (after the test drive): Let's fill out this sheet to start. What is your target price? Me: I already told you I'm not interested in buying today. Him: I can get you a great deal on a 2005 EX-V6. Let's fill out this sheet. Me: I already told you I'm not interested in buying today. And I'm interested in the 2006 LX-SE. At this point I stood up and left. Then I proceed to get bombarded with phone calls every day for 2 weeks. A few gems emerged: Conversation #1 Him: I can get you a great deal on the 2005. Me: I'm only interested in the 2006. Him: Why? The 2005 is identical. Me: No it's not, the rear looks better, and it has a better warranty. Him: The rear is identical and the warranty is the same. Me: Have you even looked at the back of the car? It's completely different. And the 2006 warranty is not identical. It's better. Him (laughing): The warranty is the same. What part do you think is different? Me: There's a new 5/60 powertrain warranty. Him: No, there's not. That's for the rust. Me: Yes, there is. Him: No, there's not. Me: You might want to check your brochure because there absolutely is. Him: OK. Then call me when you're interested in buying. Conversation #2. Him: Why don't you come in and we can talk about getting you a new car? Me: I'm not going to bother coming in unless you can give me a good deal. Him: What do you think is a good deal? Me: Invoice. Or below invoice. Him (laughing): You can't get invoice on this car! No one will give that to you! Me: I already got invoice from another dealer. Him: ....OK, well why don't you come in and we can work out a deal. Me: Can you give me less than invoice? Him: We'll see what we can work out. Me: I'm not coming in unless you can guarantee me less than invoice. Him: OK, well then call me when you're interested in buying. I wouldn't go near Planet Honda without a firm quote in writing with an OTD price broken down with all taxes and fees and a guarantee that the car is a new 2006 with the model you want with less than 20 miles on the odometer. And I would double-time it out of there if there was even a sniff of them trying to play any games. I ended up buying the same car you're looking at, a 2006 LX-V6 at Open Road Honda. The transaction took less than 1 hour and they didn't try any games or nonsense at all.
