Bad and Good Experiences in Indiana

On Friday, my wife and I went to an un-named Honda dealership in Indy on 96th st. ;) We told them that we were ready to trade our Durango on an EX-L that day, wanted them to check their inventory and give us a price. An hour and 45 minutes later, we still had neither. After threatening to walk out, they produced a van and a quote (about $5500 more than what we were expecting). In front of the salesman, I called the Dodge dealer where we purchased the Durango (Vigo Dodge in Terre Haute) and asked the owner (who we dealt with when we purchased it) what he would give us for it. He gave me a price range which I was expecting. I told Penske (oops, there's the name of the dealer!) what I was told by the Dodge dealer. We told them, you match the price on the Durango, and we'll purchase the Ody at invoice + $200 that day. They replied, in not so many words, take the van (which magically appeared) for a couple of hours, and we'll see if we can match that price. While driving the Ody (Black / Grey leather), we called the Honda dealer in Terre Haute. Years ago, my wife knew the owner, and knew he was a straight up kinda guy. After telling him what we were looking for, and after a discussion with the Dodge dealer in TH, we all decided that if the Honda dealer didn't want our Durango, the Dodge dealer would buy it from the Honda dealer. When we returned to Penske, they said that hadn't been able to match the deal we wanted, but they wanted us to return on Saturday to "work on it some more." We had enough of that. Saturday AM; road trip time to Terre Haute. First stop, Vigo Dodge... After some small talk, they look at our van and give us a price which was at the low range of what we were expecting to get for it. They said that if Honda doesn't want it, they'll buy it from them. To spark some friendly competition, they offer to show us an '05 Grand Caravan, which now has third row fold-down-in-the-floor seats. In addition to the third row, they also now have 2nd row buckets that fold into the floor. Very nice, but a useless feature for us (kids). Stop two: Thompson's Honda. We arrive, and one of the salesmen greets us by name as we walk in the door (they knew we were coming and what we were driving). We talk with the owner while the salesman warms up a van for us. We swap keys so they can look at our truck while we drive the van. We return ten minutes later, and they've got a single price on a piece of paper. It's the cost + our truck, and it's about $500 less than what I had originally wanted, and a full $6,000 less than Penske's first offer. To boot, they're giving us, when calculated, more than the Dodge dealer for our truck. Apparently one of the sales managers feels they can get more for it so they're passing some of it along to us. They also mention that Honda now has 3.65% financing. Since we had lunch plans that were being encroached on, they took our credit info and said everything would be ready for us to sign after lunch. We return an hour later, spend 10 minutes signing papers, 10 minutes swapping items, and we were out the door in our new Ody. Oh, and to top it off, they sold us a bug deflector and mud flaps for cost. Bottom line: Red / Ivory EXL at Invoice $500 over KBB for our Durango 3.65% Honda Financing Thompson's Honda in Terre Haute - highly recommended Penske Honda in Indy - Never setting foot in there again.
