Buying a car from a Honda Car Dealer
After tiring of chasing incredible deals in NJ, the idea of paying full MSRP in PA, being jerked around, and being disappointed that no dealer could locate a Touring Elite in my color choice (Dark Cherry Pearl) I decided to go with the Touring model. I lucked out yesterday and located the only Cherry Touring currently in the region (MD, DE, NJ, PA) - Martin Honda had one sitting on the lot. They quoted me $1,500 over invoice & $492 for the roof rack / crossbars - while not a steal, I felt it was fair, especially since there seem to be few of this color available. With 2 phone calls and a few back & forth emails everything was settled in a few hours. Numbers were emailed to me, itemized - without a hassle about putting it in writing. There were no "one liners" or pressure involved - a straight up honest transaction. There were no dealer accessories installed on the car, and they did not pressure me one bit on any of the "extras". When I showed the finance manager the quote from Bernardi for the HondaCare he came within $15 for the same plan - so I did get it from them. They even let me pay for the roof rack/rails separate from the car so I could take advantage of Delaware's "tax-free shopping". If anyone stumbles on a vehicle they have been looking for at Martin Honda of Newark, DE then I would go for it and know that you will have a relaxed purchase experience.
You could probably do better. The MSRP for the LX with automatic is $18255, and the invoice is $16818. Others in Newark for example are paying an average of $17291 with the destination but that does not include the dealer incentive that Honda is currently offering ($750 for the sedan and $1000 for the coupe). I would say that you should be paying at about $500 to $600 less than the offer you have. Go ahead to the edmunds.com home page and use the new car pricing guide to get to their TMV pricing report. Print it and take it with you to your dealer. The dealer offered you a pretty good price if there hadn't been a dealer incentive available, but again he's hoping to keep the dealer incentive for himself. So go ahead and ask for a $1000 less and let him meet you somewhere halfway, and make sure to tell him there is the dealer cash and if he won't meet your price than others will. As I posted yesterday I paid $16600 including destination for a manual EX coupe. You should be paying around that price or a bit less for the manual LX. Hope this helps.
Spent a month trying to find and price a 2008 Touring within 200 mi from the Northern NJ. Found 8 cars at 5 dealers - Long Island, NY (2), Atlantic City (2), Boston (1+1 demo), Siracuse, NY (1) and Newark, NJ (1). After some back-and-forth ended up making a deal over the phone with Fox Honda at Auburn, NY (Siracuse), for a white / tan Touring w/25 mi on it for $31,800, which I cosider a good, but not a great, deal at this point in time. Picked it up on Dec.30 afer a 4hr scenic drive through NJ, PA and NY. Drive-away price of $31,870, before TTL (out of state). No one else came close. Fox were very courteous, got me out in as fast as possible. (on the flip side, I would NOT recommend to deal w/ Route 22 Honda in Newark, those guys jerked me around for while not being interested one bit in negotiating)
