I've been reading this thread and it seems to me that getting the Fit I want at MSRP without any add-ons is a pretty fair deal. My wife and I are buying this car together (though I'll drive it pretty much exclusively). She has a lot more experience than I when it comes to buying new cars, and she scoffs at the idea of paying more than $200-$300 above invoice. Here's the situation so far: I began researching new cars a few weeks ago, and have pretty much settled on a Sport Fit MT (but also considering the Versa). A liitle over 2 weeks ago my wife put down $500 on a silver Sport MT already on the water. We received in the mail a signed buyers order with the VIN and itemized cost: $15,765.00 selling price 58.48 documentary service fee 1,028.53 sales tax (DuPage county, Illinois) 143.00 state license and title -500.00 deposit/down payment $16,495 balance due dealer Destination charge is not on this bill, though prices I've seen on the internet show that MSRP $15,170 + destination $595 = selling price quoted above. I'm assuming the dealer won't add $595 to $15,765. The only option I'm interseted in is a cargo cover. The car is supposed to be at the dealer this Saturday. If, after the test drive, I've confirmed this is the car I want, I'd be inclined to accept the deal at MSRP. However, I'm pretty sure my wife will insist on walking out if the dealer doesn't meet us halfway between invoice and MSRP. If we walk out, does anyone here think I'd stand a good chance finding a Sport MT elsewhere for less? I'm willing to order and wait.
Went on a trip this past week to Mississippi. Passed by Peck Honda in Gulfport. They had 2 black Civic AT-EX's and several AT & MT-LX's on the lot along with a EX Nav which they sold while I was there. They quoted $18500 + T & T (would be $19,118 when I paid Alabama T & T. I was floored but I don't want black so I passed, but I really thought about it. Would have put 280 miles on it to get it home and decided to pay off some other bills then buy an 07 unless somebody offers that around here on a gray O6.
Bought my first Honda yesterday. It's a black 2006 Civic Coupe LX MT. I got it a Bill Gatton Honda in Bristol, TN. First price quoted was $17, 860 and I said no. Second price was $17,654 and I refused. Third price was $17,150. I probably could have done better and I know I left some money on the table, but I really wanted this car. I originally speced out a white Civic Coupe LX MT, but apparently they are as rare as hen's teeth. Bill Gatton did a six state search and couldn't find one. Anyway I did everything over the phone and they were great to work with. I pick it up tomorrow. I've always been a Ford person and own an Explorer and F-150, but I chose the Honda for the fuel economy and the value. I had made an offer to a local dealer on a 2006 Ford Fusion and they didn't want to deal so when they called me yesterday afternoon to make another offer, I told them they were out of luck- I had already bought a vehicle. The salesman started yelling at me and told me that I would regret buying a Honda. I told him I offered him a fair price for the Fusion and that when they turned that down, I went elsewhere.
blkex06: You got a 'deal', and to check if it is good or bad, look up the Edmunds True Market for the Vehicle. And compare it with you price to be paid. The wheel locks and door guards are 'add ons' by the dealer to pad your bill. Other than the car, you got caught basically buying useless high margin stuff that is marked up to 1000 percent, and the value of these stuffs are in doubt. $400 for an alarm is too much for something that can be done for $100-$200. I empathize with you. We buy cars now and then, in a lifetime we buy a few cars at most. We play with the pros. In an uneven playing field we often are the losers. I bought a Civic 06 Mt and Nav. with $800 over invoice. While overjoyed, I got rolled over with dealer 'add ons' when I go to the next room to see the finance guy. Now a good deal for the car is cancelled by the bad deal with the add ons. Thanks for sharing. Manny
