Should I demand less than MSRP?
by ten_year_man on Mon Jan 15 18:01:45 PST 2007
I've been reading this thread and it seems to me that getting the Fit I want at MSRP without any add-ons is a pretty fair deal. My wife and I are buying this car together (though I'll drive it pretty much exclusively). She has a lot more experience than I when it comes to buying new cars, and she scoffs at the idea of paying more than $200-$300 above invoice. Here's the situation so far: I began researching new cars a few weeks ago, and have pretty much settled on a Sport Fit MT (but also considering the Versa). A liitle over 2 weeks ago my wife put down $500 on a silver Sport MT already on the water. We received in the mail a signed buyers order with the VIN and itemized cost: $15,765.00 selling price 58.48 documentary service fee 1,028.53 sales tax (DuPage county, Illinois) 143.00 state license and title -500.00 deposit/down payment $16,495 balance due dealer Destination charge is not on this bill, though prices I've seen on the internet show that MSRP $15,170 + destination $595 = selling price quoted above. I'm assuming the dealer won't add $595 to $15,765. The only option I'm interseted in is a cargo cover. The car is supposed to be at the dealer this Saturday. If, after the test drive, I've confirmed this is the car I want, I'd be inclined to accept the deal at MSRP. However, I'm pretty sure my wife will insist on walking out if the dealer doesn't meet us halfway between invoice and MSRP. If we walk out, does anyone here think I'd stand a good chance finding a Sport MT elsewhere for less? I'm willing to order and wait.
Good deal in Mississippi

Went on a trip this past week to Mississippi. Passed by Peck Honda in Gulfport. They had 2 black Civic AT-EX's and several AT & MT-LX's on the lot along with a EX Nav which they sold while I was there. They quoted $18500 + T & T (would be $19,118 when I paid Alabama T & T. I was floored but I don't want black so I passed, but I really thought about it. Would have put 280 miles on it to get it home and decided to pay off some other bills then buy an 07 unless somebody offers that around here on a gray O6.
Civic Coupe
by vafarmwife on Thu Apr 06 02:51:39 PDT 2006
Bought my first Honda yesterday. It's a black 2006 Civic Coupe LX MT. I got it a Bill Gatton Honda in Bristol, TN. First price quoted was $17, 860 and I said no. Second price was $17,654 and I refused. Third price was $17,150. I probably could have done better and I know I left some money on the table, but I really wanted this car. I originally speced out a white Civic Coupe LX MT, but apparently they are as rare as hen's teeth. Bill Gatton did a six state search and couldn't find one. Anyway I did everything over the phone and they were great to work with. I pick it up tomorrow. I've always been a Ford person and own an Explorer and F-150, but I chose the Honda for the fuel economy and the value. I had made an offer to a local dealer on a 2006 Ford Fusion and they didn't want to deal so when they called me yesterday afternoon to make another offer, I told them they were out of luck- I had already bought a vehicle. The salesman started yelling at me and told me that I would regret buying a Honda. I told him I offered him a fair price for the Fusion and that when they turned that down, I went elsewhere.

blkex06: You got a 'deal', and to check if it is good or bad, look up the Edmunds True Market for the Vehicle. And compare it with you price to be paid. The wheel locks and door guards are 'add ons' by the dealer to pad your bill. Other than the car, you got caught basically buying useless high margin stuff that is marked up to 1000 percent, and the value of these stuffs are in doubt. $400 for an alarm is too much for something that can be done for $100-$200. I empathize with you. We buy cars now and then, in a lifetime we buy a few cars at most. We play with the pros. In an uneven playing field we often are the losers. I bought a Civic 06 Mt and Nav. with $800 over invoice. While overjoyed, I got rolled over with dealer 'add ons' when I go to the next room to see the finance guy. Now a good deal for the car is cancelled by the bad deal with the add ons. Thanks for sharing. Manny
Re: Accord LX 5A 19,000 OTD good? [wardgb2]
by nash123 on Sat Jul 23 15:01:02 PDT 2005
wardgb2 Hope everybody is OK and the insurance gives you a good price for the old one. Anyways, I just got my car today, using my own template(!): Location: Chicago / IL Trim: Accord LX, 4dr Engine: 4cyl Transmission: MT Other options: none (floor mats for free) Base price including destination charge ($515): $17162 Tax: $1506 (for some reason they used 8.75% instead of 9% and insisted it is correct - I don't care) Title Registration: $ 80 (transfer plates otherwise it would have been $143) Doc Fee: $55 Other Fees: ($0) Total OTD: $ 18,804 (+-) PAID CASH NO FINANCING Color Dark Blue / Gray interior Bought it from Honda of Lisle. Their initial quote was $17722, but after some discussions I was quoted $17,000 web price, and it was only good for 7/18 only. I told the rep that I have a newborn and cannot come out to the dealership until Saturday, and refused to put a deposit. Then emailed back on Thu to arrange for the Sat appointment, and at that time $17,000 was still good. Test drove the blue this morning, sat down at the table, sales rep put down $17,000 on the bill of sale, and went back to do the paperwork. That is when the manager came out and said no way they can honor the $17,000, it is $17,250 today. I was furious and was about to walk out (but I live north Chicago and it would hurt to go back all the way to Gurnee for the next lowest price). Anyways he said the incentive they had before is not there today, and I should have known that the price is only good for that day, and they would be losing money if they sold for $17K. And I said you'd be losing money on 7/18 or today, what is the difference, and plus there is no such incentive, the only one out there is the 3% holdback and the FTD $750, He said that they actually made their sales target since the last time I talked to them and the incentive is not there anymore. rep should have told me that blah blah and it is his fault too. So I said I am not paying the extra $250 if it is the reps fault that he did not tell me and take it out of his commission. He went and came back and gave me the $17162, which he said is less because he took out all of rep's commission. He said that he knows he is getting negative feedback on this sale from me but said this is the absolute minimum. I said you bet I will leave a negative feedback since this is BS, but bought the car anyways since it was the only blue MT in Chicago. So my experience is not good at all with these people. If only I had known that this would happen, I would have bought it at Castle Honda who gave me a quote of $100 less than these people did and is only couple of miles away from where I live. Other than that they did not push me to get extended warranty or other extras. Anyways, my lowest quotes were (low to high) Castle, Valley, Rosen, Ed Napleton, Continental (all between 17066 to 17316) and I ended up with Honda of Lisle. I am seeing that Castle is consistently offering the lowest in the group - search for desseekingcar's posts, she bought it from there (LX 4dr AT at $17700 or so). Good luck.
