'08 Ody EX-L without Nav or RES
by replaytv on Fri Jun 20 02:24:21 PDT 2008
First of all, I would like to thank all the forum posters here since you really educated me a lot on this buying process. This is my little pay-back. Please forgive me for the lengthiness of this message. Earlier this week, I requested quotes through honda.com for an '08 Ody EX-L silver from 10 local dealerships in the Boston area. I stated in all requests that I would pay by cash, no financing needed and I'd prefer to be contacted through emails. Within 2 days, I received 6 quotes in the emails (all quotes below include destination charge, which is clearly stated in each email): Cambridge Honda: $26,998.00 Atamian Honda: $26,999.00 Honda Gallery: $27,156.85 Kelly Honda: $27,200.00 Bernardi: $27,301.00 Herb Chambers: $27,801.05 The doc fee ranges from $264-299. Title, registration and inspection: $115 ($50+$36+$29: standard charges for new plate in MA) I also received emails from two dealership without stating clearly what exact price they would offer me, so I didn't put them into my consideration at all. I also received several phone calls from others even though I stated clearly that I prefered emails. I didn't take their phone offers seriously either. In fact, their offers weren't that good to begin with. At the end I decided to go with Cambridge Honda because of price plus they stated in their email that the quoted price includes an "industry exclusive 5 year/100,000 miles warranty at absolutely no additional cost". There is a catch to this and I'll describe more. Before I went to the dealership, I called them up to confirm the pricing, including doc fee, TTL, etc. I also asked her specifically whether there would be charges other than what we just discussed and she quickly responded "nope, that's it!". There is another catch to this and I'll describe more. Yesterday, I went to Cambridge Honda, hoping to get everything done within an hour or two. I walked out in almost exactly two hours, paid $1,000 deposit with a credit card. The two hours I spent at the dealership was pleasant but a little annoying. Here is what happened during the two hours I spent there: I was passed around to different people, first the service dept rep, next the accessories guy who tried to sell me wheel locks, mud guard, etc. then another person who tried to briefly go over the car with me, then another one to go over the details of pricing and at the end, the extended warranty guy trying to sell me the HondaCare warranty. Here are the two catches: 1. The "industry exclusive 5 year/100,000 miles warranty at absolutely no additional cost" to me it's a scam. You have to do all the maintenance work at Cambridge Honda in order to get the 5 year/100,000 miles warranty. It wasn't asterisked in the email and I didn't know it until I asked for more details. 2. I specifically asked to confirm there would be no other charges other than doc fee and TTL and I received a quick "nope, that's it!" on the phone. But when I looked at the pricing agreement, I noticed there was a 0.75% "commission charge" added to the total and I immediately asked to talk to the manager. The sales manager kept saying that the amount was what the sales people got paid, all dealership do the same, etc., which is total BS to me. At the dealership, I even called a friend who used to work at Bernardi and she never heard of such a charge. After some heated conversation, the sales manager agreed to remove the commission charge. So, don't budge on any add-on charges other than the regular doc fee and TTL. In fact, doc fee to me is also a scam and I really can't justify why they charge nearly $300 for documents that cost less than $1. But since all dealership in my area charge about the same, I didn't bother to haggle on that. Lastly, I was too naive to bring in my personal check book not knowing they needed a bank check or official check (This is my 3rd car purchase and my previous two purchases were used ones from friends). Now I understand why they didn't mention the fact that they needed a bank check or official check when I was confirming the pricing with them over the phone simply because they wanted to up-sell me with accessories, extended warranty, etc. This morning, I brought the bank check and spent another hour at the dealership for signing papers and going over the car features with the salesperson (I'm not 100% sure but I believe they are required by law to go over all the features before you drive the car off the lot) then I walked out the door with a free bottle of champagne and my brand new silver Ody with about 6 miles on it! My advice to new car buyers: Tell the dealership that you would need the exact amount for the bank to write up a bank check or official check before coming in, if you're not financing. Anything that sounds too good to be true, ask them whether there is any catch, like the "industry exclusive 5 year/100,000 miles warranty at absolutely no additional cost" I received in the email. Lastly, do not purchase HondaCare from the dealership. You can get it online for a lot less. I purchased my HondaCare warranty 8yr/100k $0 deductible for $1,120. Cambridge Honda offered me $1,495 which I quickly declined. I would still recommend Cambridge Honda since I never felt pushed to buy anything. Every time I said no, I wasn't given any hard sales pitch and all staff there are quite polite and friendly. However, I still don't like the fact they surprised me with the bogus "commission charge". I made two trips and spent a total of approximately 3 hours at the dealership. Hopefully, you'll spend less time than that after reading this message. I personally would like to walk in, pay it and drive it off the lot but I learned my lession. At the end, I paid $26,998 + 5% MA tax + $264 doc fee + $115 title, registration, and inspection, i.e. $28,726.90 OTD (MSRP $32,845 including destination) Good luck to you all!
worth the wait, not without pain

I got my Fit in late July after a two month wait from time of order, from the Honda Barn in North Reading, Mass. I live in Boston and was exasperated/disgusted by Herb Chambers and Cambridge Honda (contact me if you want to know the sordid details of my sleazy experiences at those dealers). I was very pleased wit the hassle- and gimmick-free experience at Honda Barn. Straight shooters who didn't go below the belt with the usual car dealer tactics. I ordered a black Fit Sport manual with the 16" alloy wheels, floor mats, cargo cover, and iPod link, and paid $17,600 for everything, including installation costs. I feel lucky to have gotten it for hundreds less than what the other guys were offering for the same specs. The Honda Barn guys were happy to hear that they outshined Herb Chambers, who's sort of the Microsoft of car dealers here in Southern New England. I love my new Fit (but hoping my mileage improves... still only 26-28 mpg at 870 miles and I don't rev high). It's a blast to drive around town and I get a lot of compliments. All the more reason that I'm heart broken: it got broken into two weeks ago and badly injured... Read more here.

Sure, it's Bernadi Honda in Framingham. Due to urgent need of a minivan for my wife and because I have to travel abroad frequently, I went shopping only yesterday afternoon. A year ago (july) my friend was able to get a new 06 EXL for 27K, including dest+doc at Boch, so it's my target for negotiation. I went to Bernadi Honda first, saying I want to buy quick, not need to test drive it. I've played enough with my friend car, so now I just care about the price. They said with that agressive offer, I have to select a car in their stock, which does not have my first choice color (white exterior). And even if I agree with the second choice (beige), they can not give me 27K. I said let me go to another dealer for second opinion, and if they can not match, I will return. When I nearly walked out of the door, they gave me $27250. I drove to Boch Honda, 30 minutes away in Norwood. The guy there said they no way can give me that price, but they have my first choice color. He advised me to go back to Bernadi, because their price would be $800-900 more. So I walked out, driving to Burlington's Herb Chamber. The sales manager said they have the color, but their price is also higher. He does not believe that another dealer can do this, "why do they want to lose money?". He walked away. It's the second worst experience - I felt he does not trust a perspective customer, catching my seriousness of buying in the same day. Can not sell. However the sales guy at HerbChamber whom I met first was very nice, telling me after his boss left, that sometimes Honda can give dealership 2% cash back if they sell quick the car that stays long on the lot. So that may be the case with Bernadi. I understood, saying, now because HerbChamber has the color of my first choice in-stock, I can add $250 more. So it would be $27500+doc+plate+sales tax. The guy called his manager, who counter-offered $28131 as best. I decided the color does not worth that much of difference, so I return to Bernadi to take the car they have. When driving to Bernadi, for the last try I decided to call Cambridge Honda, asking if they can match the price ($27500, now including doc fee) and have the color I like. If yes I will drive to them instead. After 5 mins the guy called back, saying they can match, if I go to buy then. I was glad, asked again for sure, about the numbers. But then the guy said "if you can prove that Bernadi made you that offer". I said I don't have that written, I forgot or they did not want to give me that piece of paper. The guy laughed "of course they can not give you the number on paper, it's a trick to keep you back. They can not do that, losing money". I said "why don't you trust me, you can call them". "No, we don't do that, it's different dealership". So, this is the worst experience with dealerships. I told the guy I would later send the paperwork to him by fax. At Bernadi when meeting with the finance lady, having paid the deposit, I repeated the unanswered question about APR (before they said they have to wait until filling the application, and I did not care much because I thought it should be 1.9-3.9%). She showed me the APR is 7.99%. I was shocked and said it's higher than my home line equity, from which I can get tax deduction on interest. I said I would pause the deal and shop for loan myself first. Then she looked at some book and told me she can take off a point, meaning 6.99%. Over phone my wife said I can continue the deal, and we will shop for a better rate to pay off later. Also there are tons of credit card companies which offer us 0% APR balance transfer for the first 12-16 months. So I paid $650 more than my friend did last July. Also, she got 3.9% financing. Don't know what happened. The 07 model has the only difference in telematic steering wheel. However I've read in this forum that Odyssey sales came down 20% this year, so the price should be similar. (And I still can read here that people get close to 27K). Maybe she caught a promotional deal, or maybe the dollar recently has dropped against the yen, so all prices go higher?

Yes, I got my SE AT for $18,362 (incl dest)+TTL. I'm not sure where you're getting your numbers. The MSRP on an SE is $22,075, and the invoice is $19,928. There's a $750 incentive to dealers and a 3% holdback, which leads to the price of around $18,500. My cousin in Cambridge, MA just bought a VP AT. MSRP is $19,575, invoice is $17,682, and she got the car for around $16,300.
2006 Accord EX-L internet quotes
by agdn on Mon Jan 30 13:05:11 PST 2006
Do dealerships honor their own internet quotes on car? I got an internet offer of 22,288 (inc desination)for a 2006 honda accord EX-L from the same dealer Cambridge Honda in MA from whom I had gotten a price of 22,708 including destination fees, and put down a deposit. I got the lower offer the next day in my email acct. When I called dealer re:the internet offer, they were very unprofessional and rude and would not honor the internet quote....has this happened to anyone else and how did you deal with it? needless to say the order was cancelled. i plan on following thru to attorney general, consumer affairs, etc etc any suggestions? thx

Come to think of it, wouldn't it be harder to sell the EX models with the NAVI option? I mean are there that many people out there willing to spend nearly $20K on a Civic? So far I 've been to 3 dealerships. All of them had EX models with the Navi option in the lot. That's all they had. No DX, no LX (well they did have 1 LX auto), no EX 5sp. coupes or sedans, all they had was Navi EX's. It seems that the $20+K sticker price scares people away. I think these cars sit in the lot longer so it's possible the car he got in Massachussets was one of the first ones they got a month ago and they decided to let it go. Or it could be Cambridge, MA is a very rich town and Hondas don't sell well, but Acura and Lexus do.. I 'm sure there 's an explanation for someone getting an '06 for under invoice. I hope the car wasn't damaged and repaired (body damage, some flood damage, etc.) which is why they were willing to get rid of it for $150 under invoice. You guys do know that salespeople and test drivers/customers bang up new cars all the time, right? In the early '90's before I owned a house, I used to rent and lived 2 blocks from a Mitsubishi dealership. One block down from the dealership was a body shop. Next to the body shop was the deli I used to regulary get breakfast or lunch at. I 'd sit in that Deli and about once a month I 'd watch a new Mitsu drive in to the body shop or get towed there with body damage and other wheel or axle/suspension damage. Eventually I had to visit that body shop myself due to my own fender bender. The owner was giving me an estimate said the car dealership was his best customer! He said sometimes the cars would have less than 5mi. on the odo! So it could be a few things why he paid under invoice (unless he forgot to add the dest. charge..) If $19.3K was what I wanted to spend on a car, I 'd be seriously looking at an '06 Accord LX for the same price or less (invoice on an Accord LX coupe 5-sp. is $18,895!) BTW, salespeople make more than just 8% on the amount above invoice. Even if a salesperson sold all his new cars at invoice, he 'd still get a minimum of $100 per car. Some dealerships give the salesperson $150 per car, depending on location, brand/manufacturer (like Acura, Lexus, BMW, etc.) and price of the car. My friend gets $150 min. at the Toyota dealership he works at. Most BMW dealers give their salespeople $200 even if the car is sold at invoice. It varies, but don't think salespeople don't make anything because you bought the car at invoice or below. They are not doing charity work.
