Buying a car from a Honda Car Dealer
WARNING - This is a fairly long note. Well, after almost 1.5 years of looking, I finally purchased a Pilot. It's a 2005 EX with leather. I was having a really hard time because first I couldn't decide between the Pilot, Murano, and Highlander; and then because I couldn't find a deal that I liked. About a month ago, I finally decided to buy from MP Honda in Ohio. None of the dealers in MN were moving too much off the MSRP. After I told one of them about the price from MP, he said I better get my ticket to Ohio! Well I was about to purchase my airline ticket, but I was dreading the 12-hour drive back, plus the cheapest ticket from MN to Cleveland was about $250. Add to that the $100 Ohio fee and the $25 Ohio temp tags and that was putting a dent in my savings on the car! I also went to a couple of local Honda dealers and I was very up front with them. Told them about the deals in NJ, CA, and OH. They were not interested in any deal like that. So, I was pretty close to getting my ticket for Cleveland, when I decided to make a last ditch effort at finding a closer deal. I looked up 16 Honda dealers in WI, IL, SD, ND, and IA - figuring any one of them would be much closer than Ohio. I got responses from several of them and the one from Sioux Falls,SD, was the cheapest at $30,309, which is even below MP Honda in Ohio. I was about to make the final deal, when I decided to call a couple of dealers that hadn't responded. I got a call back from a dealer in Fargo, ND and the salesperson asked what price they needed to beat. I gave them the price and they called me back in 10 minutes or so with a price of $29,558 including the rear splash guards (they also have a $149 doc fee which was already included in the price, so the actual price was below invoice!), for the color I wanted (steel Blue) and in stock! They also had another steel blue one with lots of additional chrome (side steps, mirror and bumper garnish, and exhaust tips) for $1300 more but I didn't want to pay that much. So, on Saturday, I made my cousin drive me to Fargo and I picked up the car. The drive took 3.5 hours each way (from St. Paul, MN) and the deal took less than an hour. They were great and the salesperson was very helpful through the whole deal - and absolutely no pressure for any additional stuff. I am happy with the car and with the deal I got. My salesperson did say they will give the same deal to any body else. So, look my profile up for my email address if you're interested in the name of the salesperson. Although, I am not sure how many people from outside of MN will drive/fly to Fargo to pick up a car. But for $1900 in savings, you'll never know. Thanks to everyone for sharing their buying experiences on this board. I hope my experience also helps someone.
