Just closed the deal tonight on our 2008 Magnetic Pearl Honda Civic Hybrid. Purchased at Randy Kuehl Honda for $22,400. Secured the deal way back in early May. At closing today they said I am extremely lucky to have gotten such a good deal. Salesman stated they are only doing MSRP or higher now as demand has skyrocketed in the past month. I'm sure glad I secured the deal when I did. Had to wait a month and a half for the car but finally got it straight in from Japan with only 4 miles. I think I paid a bit much for the extended warranty but it is cancellable up to 60 days so I will likely cancel this one and go for the www.bernardiwarranty.com deal. I can't wait to see how this car performs in the long run. Good luck to the rest of you hunting for a good deal!
Buying Experience in Eastern Iowa

Hey everyone, Since this is the forum about buying experiences, I felt the need to share my 'near-buying' experience. Once I decided on the fit, the '07 Sport AT to be exact, I went to my local dealer, Randy Kuehl Honda in Cedar Rapids, IA. The fit is very popular, and I have my heart set on blue. They had a blue on their list of incoming cars for a few weeks. Awesome! Too bad a few minutes later when we started getting deposit papers ready and found out that someone sold the car, but had not taken the time to cross it off the list. It was sad, but not that big a deal. We decided to see what we could do to get one in. I was hoping for a dealer trade or switching one of their cars on order so that I could get it sooner rather than the 3-4 months it takes to order one from scratch. I filled out the deposit papers, put $1k down, and anxiously awaited news. Three weeks later, I called to see what was up, as I wanted to be informed of what was going on, and it seemed like a long time to figure out where the car was coming from. "Bad news," said my sales guy, "it'll be here next week!" That's great! At the end of the week it was due to arrive, I called to get some news, as they were not setting a good precedent of calling me back. Nothing yet. That weekend was Labor Day, so I waited until Thursday to give them some time into this last week for it to show up. When I called, I got bad news again, but this time it was for real. My guy and the sales manager had me on speakerphone to relay what had happened together. The new list for September had my name written on it for a blue '08 Fit, since I was supposedly next in line. No one told me, but apparently the vehicle came in on Tuesday, and they found out that the car had actually already been sold to someone before me... I understand the car is popular, but no one checked to make sure I really was next in line and not 2nd or 3rd. No one did much research when that sheet arrived either, as it should have been pretty obvious if someone was ahead of me. My excitement quickly clouded over into anger and frustration. My sales guy was very apologetic, and said maybe we could talk to the sales manager to try and get this worked out. I said I was probably going to take my money back and give it to someone else. I came in to the store a few minutes later for my money. I got there, we made some small talk, and when the sales manager was ready, my wife and I went in to talk to him. Keep in mind that he was the one telling me most of the bad news via speaker. We sit down, he says 'How can I help you today?" in a regular business tone of voice. I tell him I would to try and straighten this mess out, because I felt very betrayed and downtrodden. With no apology in words or tone of voice, he tells me the best he can do is a dealer trade, which would take a month or so, or order one new. He was even brazen enough to suggest that these things happen. I went from :( to very quickly. Not only did he not care about what had happened, or want to keep our business, but he spoke to me as if I was some idiot with too much money who just didn't understand how buying a car works. I may not know everything, but I do know a lot about common decency and customer service. At that point, I decided I would rather buy my Fit elsewhere than even take one from them for free. I said I wanted my deposit back, which they had already cashed, but since the office manager was gone for the day, they had to wait to write it out. Things happen, but I was so upset at the way I was treated. I truly felt like a 'sale' and nothing more. Since the Fit sells so well, my business was replaceable, as was I. They didn't even care about my opinion of them. For all I know, there could have been someone on the lot with $17k in cash Tuesday morning they thought needed the car more. If you live in the Eastern Iowa area, don't shop at Randy Kuehl Honda. They only care about money. They don't even care about your money if they can find someone else behind you.

Don't go over to the dark side of Toyota because of a unscrupulous dealer. Actually, Toyota a good company, but I am a Honda bigot. I have always owned at least one Honda for the last 15 yrs with zero issues. I have sworn never to buy another brand after my last two minivans (both Dodges) cost me thousands in repairs. Don't even get me started on why I was stupid and didn't buy an Odessey in 1999. I thought I was smart saving $2000 up front. Anyhow, I found your email interesting because I almost bought my Pilot at Ed Napleton's last month. I also am from IA and was struggling to get a 2003 Pilot at a decent price. I was able to pull in an offer for a $1000 off MSRP in Omaha for a 2003 and several offered $500-$750 off, but it was my trade of a 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan SE that was killing me. No one was willing to give more than $4000-$4500. A flood of them on the market. Anyhow, in my search, I contacted Ed Napleton based on one of your earlier emails. I have a note from the internet mgr on 8/18 offering me their last 2003 Pilot (Red) - Just came available. Sounds like that might have been yours. He had earlier quoted me that he would sell me one for $750 off MSRP in early August, but I had a better deal out of Michigan for $1200 off a 2003. However, I was looking at an 8 hr drive. I had decided to wait for a 2004 EX-L by that time anyhow. Why take the depreciation on a 2003 two weeks before 2004s came out. The internet manager sent me this note on 8/29 so I am not sure what the changing market conditions were: "Here is the pricing that I have on the 2004 Pilot. The price of the vehicle is $31,620, which is a savings of $750.00 off of MSRP. There is a miscellaneous Cook County Fee of $10.00, a $50.00 Doc fee, and $460.00 for destination, and a $10.00 drive away fee (Temporary registration). Your sales tax would have to be paid in Iowa. If you would like to order a Pilot, or if you have any questions, please feel free to call me at the dealership, I am here all day. Looking forward to hearing from you!!"    I was able to get this same deal at Chezik-Sayers Honda in Iowa City and they treated me a lot better with my trade ($5500) than anyone else. Honda of Ames provided me $600 off MSRP and the Superior Honda in Omaha offered $800, but I didn't want to drive 2 hrs to find out if they were going to be less than Chezik on the trade for just a $50 savings. If I remember right, the Cedar Rapids (Randy Kuehl)dealer was willing to go $500 off a 2004, but you had to specifically call the internet sales manager. I bought my 1996 civic from them and they are a great dealership. Fantastic service. Anyhow, hope you stick with the Pilot. I am now the proud owner of a 2004 Pilot Sagebrush EX-L RES. Order on 9/6 and picked up on 9/20 (one week before they had projected).
