Buying a car from a Honda Car Dealer
Just purchased (3 days ago), a Galaxy Gray 2008 EX Auto FWD for $23,100 OTD (20,300 before tax, license, etc). Only "extra" included was splash guards. Of course, they tried to talk me into $5K more in the "finance dept" (aka 'let's try to get as much money as we can' dept). I did not buy dealer car alarm or warranty. Plan on purchasing car alarm through local business and warranty through myhondawarranty (dotcom). Only thing I may regret not buying was the package for paint protection (can't remember exactly what they called it... clearcoat?). Not sure if I'll be able to find comparable service outside the dealership. It guaranteed no fading of paint color for 5 years. Any suggestions for a replacement? I live in AZ so sun exposure is a daily occurence.

I am buying this car at DOBBS HONDA. My buying experience is so-so. I had to go two times to the dealer because of a contract problem (Not really the dealer’s fault.) I went there in the morning (5/1/06) with the intention to buy. However they did not have any civic lx autos so I deposited $500 for a Galaxy Gray Metallic Civic auto LX for $19,650. I did not want the EX due to the sun roof (Had a nasty experience with the Scion TC’s sunroof.) I felt a bit down cause I wanted to buy one today and drive away... and was carrying a ton of cash. I then went back home and saw that I did not sign my contract. (Had a copy of the contract... There was an X but no signature! lol) Now the fun part! I checked my email and found out that another dealership was offering me a better deal. (More accessories and 400 less) I called them and found out my deal was sold and they would not give me a deal at all. I went back to DOBBS Honda and talked to a sales manager... I had printed the offer on the internet and asked if he could match what they were offering me. He put on a show by counting my deposit and putting it on my table... Then he tells me to go to the other dealership cause he can’t match it. Boy was I pissed! He acted like I was saying that I did not want the car. I blew a fuse and yelled something with sherlock at the manager and the manager promptly walked out. (I basically said I did not come here to be pissed on and that I saw that I did not sign the contract... of course with lots of bad words... and probably incoherently) If my mother was not there, I would have probably ripped the manager’s head off. (No ride so parents were there). I went to the desk and asked to see the head manager. Desk tells me that the head manager is gone and that the manager I was talking to IS the main manager. I was about to leave to buy another Toyota product when my mother insisted on talking to the manager. Desk called the Manager we were talking to and he did not come out - which totally pissed me off. So the desk called the Internet Sales Manager (AKA ISM from now on)(She was with the main manager so we picked up her name) My mother told the ISM that we never said we wanted our deposit back and that the manager did not need to put on a show and make us feel bad. The ISM told me that since I SIGNED a contract, trying to changing it would piss the manager off. I told the ISM that I did NOT SIGN the contract, which was one of my primary reasons I came back. (Didn’t want them to change prices on me cause I didn’t sign) The ISM asked me who signed and insisted that she saw a signature... Well the ISM walked back and after 5 mins or so both managers came back out looking apologetic... The main manager called me Sherlock... lol guess I'm a smart ass... The main manager said they would drop the price to $19,500 and that they could not possibly match the price of the other dealer. They changed the price, I signed, paid the deposit again and got a copy of the new contract. Jeez, I actually wrote a story.
I know I'm paying $300 over MSRP for the doc fees in Az, but it's still better than anything I can find in CA. I've heard some dealers in CA say MSRP, but they have no visibility as to when I would get one. So I chose PHX so I can visit friends, do some MTB riding in the sun and road trip it home. One dealer in Petaluma (North of SF) was waiting for a VIN from the factory and never got back to me despite my leaving messages. If I thought that one poster was true about an EX-L DVD in Alabama, for $29k, I'd gladly pay the $400 to ship it to my door - but I have a hard time validating some of these prices with real inventory. I'll make one more round of call to Los Angeles. But it does feel strange having to hunt down salesmen who have my number, know exactly what I want, know what I'll pay, but don't keep in touch. The only dealer that has religiously kept in touch with me is local and still wants $1,500 over MSRP.
