Re: focus 2008 [jfritsch]

"The mazda3 is judged best in its class year after year. The focus not so. " Well, depends on what you're looking for, and who's doing the judging, doesn't it? OK, the enthusiast magazines/sites like the Mazda 3 -- good handling, fun to drive. But is that what all car buyers want? For my brother, he wanted a decent car that was inexpensive and had ESC. You can get ESC in any '09 Focus, even a stripped Focus S with crank up windows. So he ended up getting a Focus SE with ESC for under $15K. Want ESC in a Mazda 3? Sorry, you need to buy the higher trim car. Same with Civic. Same with Cobalt. Want ESC in a Versa or a Sentra? Sorry, not available. So if certain safety features are important to a buyer, and if cost is a factor, then the Mazda 3 does not compete well with the Focus. When rating cars, car magazines/websites tend to emphasive acceleration, dynamic handling, and how fun a car is to drive. But many buyers are more concerned with how noisy a car is (big factor if you have a long commute); or how good the stereo system is; or how large the trunk is; or whether safety features are available; or whether it gets good gas mileage; or whether a dealer is readily available; or whether the car is considered reliable; or whether the car is assembled in the USA by Union labor; and so on. "Best in class" means different things to different people. The Mazda 3 might be "best in class" for handling, but it certainly does not have "best in class" mileage; in fact, the sportier models have poor mileage for the class. We owned a Mazda, and we liked it a lot. I have nothing against Mazdas, except I probably wouldn't get one now because there isn't a dealer within 100 miles of us. Last point: we tried out a Versa (which I liked) when we were car shopping -- but my wife found the seating position uncomfortable, so we crossed that one off our list. Because of that bad front seat for my wife, it didn't matter at all to us that some car magazine rated it as "better" some other cars in its class.
Re: real world MPG for AWD taurus x [joes11]
by larryqw on Mon Oct 19 12:46:06 PDT 2009
I have a Taurus X Limited FWD. I can get mileage anywhere from 0 MPG (idling) to 29 MPG going 60 MPH on a flat freeway. Five minute errands are the worst for gas usage. I find my mileage drops tremendously when the engine is cold. It almost pays to drive faster when you first start to get it warmer quicker (but no high RPMs when cold for longer life). Taking my kids to school and errands around town is the worst. Lots of idling, the engine is cold, lots of starts and stops. In a week at home doing nothing but kid shuttle I got under 15 MPG one week. So what you say makes sense. This type of driving is where Hybrids excel. In my work commute, which is 70% freeway, I get ~23 MPG average. Last week I started on the highway and had 27.1 MPG indicated after 40 miles. But then I hit the residential area, and with lights, stops, and starts, the average MPG quickly dropped down to my usual 23 MPG. On some occasions, like vacation trips when I'm just doing freeway and being very careful, I can get over 26 MPG, but that's rare.
What is a good price?

I'm in the market for a new truck and have narrowed it down to 09 Ford Super Crew 4WD 5.5 Bed XLT and tow package. This one has the 4.6L 3V engine. The List is $35,785. What kind of price should I be looking for. The other question I have is what kind of gas mileage for highway driving could I expect from the 4.6L or the 5.4L. Thanks for any info you could give me RJR2565

Minus 3,000 rebates and 1,017 in dealer holdback for 29007. It hasnt even hit the lot yet. There must be some nice hidden incentives from ford unless im missing somehting???? Anyone think i can do better cuz i havent taken possession of the vehicle yet so its not to late, i think.

Hey there - Just purchased today. MSRP 41,715. Sales price with 0% for 60 - 38K (no rebates b/c here in GA you can't have 0% for 60 with rebate cash). 250 dealer doc fee which I knew about before negotiating. Very nice experience with the folks I dealt with - very happy. Love the car! Very pleased with the whole experience!
Dealer scam
by sp4littlejohn on Thu Jul 09 01:35:57 PDT 2009
I'm retired from FMC and a while back I got a call from my grand-daughter and her husband who wanted to use my "Friends & Family" discount in buying a new Ford Fusion. I was to meet them at a dealership near the husbands home, Speedway Ford in Griffin, Ga. which, today I'm sure was a prearranged deal by the husband. I got to the dealership and got them a PIN number so they could buy a car as long as I "co-signed" for it which I was willing to do. The finance person at the dealership brought out the paperwork and said "sign here" on the paperwork which I did and they got a 2009 Ford Fussion to drive away in. Weeks later I got a call from my grand-daughter who told me that her husband was out whoring around and she didn't know where he was with the 2009 Ford Fussion. A week later I got a call from Citi-Bank telling me that I was late in my payment on "MY" Ford Fusion, the dealership put the car in my name with the husband as my co-signer and the dealership refuses to do anything to correct their screw up. I've received two and three calls every day, seven days a week since that time from Citi-Bank who also won't do anything about a car that I neither own nor for that matter have even turned the key on and today the car is out wandering somewhere in Texas. :( My credit rating is effected and going lower every day but the dealership made their sale and Citi-Bank can always attach my pension since they can't find the car. If they did it would show up as a repossession on me and the finance company will get their losses out of attaching my pension. Stay away from Speedway Ford but according to my grand-daughter that Ford Fussion is a great car when it's around but then again it makes a darn good get-away too.
