Dealers forced to accept 2 Exhibitions for 1 FEH?
by fmorriso on Fri Jun 06 08:59:04 PDT 2008
I have been told that dealers in Washington, DC are being forced by Ford HQ to accept a "bundling" of two Ford Exhbitions in order to get an allocation for one Ford Escape Hybrid. Has anyone else heard of such a thing? Furthermore, I was tod that, since an Exhibition is basically a "boat anchor" that isn't going to sell, dealers have to factor in the $4000 carrying cost of one of these "boat anchors" and make that up on the "hot sellers", resulting in the $3000-$5000 "premium" you see on the sticker of a Ford Escape Hybrid. Sounds like I better find another dealer outside the DC area and see if they have the "escaped" (lower-case) this "bundling" issue and can sell me a FEHL without the "premium" tacked on.
Re: Any "hard production/delivery" dates yet 2009 FEH? [wyatt8it]

What city in North Carolina is the dealer located in? My dealer says that since they are not in the Washington, DC "district", they may have a different allocation or that particular dealer accepted more than the usual allocation amount. I'm not sure how that translates into getting VIN's on orders quicker, but since my April 20, 2008 order doesn't have a VIN yet, there must be something going on that hasn't been fully explained to me for why orders taken after mine (e.g., one dated May 7) have jumped ahead of mine.

In my mind, it all depends if you need the car now, or can afford to wait 6 months. If you scan the previous messages in this file, you'll see lots of woe from folks that were promised a truck with a 60 day delivery time, and it took them much longer to get it in. I'm not convinced the availability of the batteries, the critical element for producing these vehicles, will be any better this year. If the price of gas spikes to $4.00 a gallon, that will only drive the demand for these puppies that much higher. If they're available now, and they're of the type you want, I would buy it. The ones you will likely find on the dealer's lots will be fully tricked out, since they make more money that way. If you want the basic capability without frills (no leather, no Navigation system, no moonroof), you'll probably have to order it special. The 08 and 09 models will be very similar, since, there's not much in the works planned for design changes that I can see. 2008 was a major design turn for the truck. There will likely be at least a 4-month gap betweeen when you can order (May) and when Ford starts delivery (late September at the earliest). Unless Denver is radically different from the DC area, don't think you're going to get a great deal below MSRP, either. My $0.02 worth.

Neuroboy, My experience with the DC mid-atlantic area is not as bad as Fmorriso's but its one where you have to expect you don't have the advantage a typical auto buyer has. First-off, he's right, the demand for the truck is such that you can't expect to get a great deal below MSRP. A lot of dealers are adding "market premiums" and getting them. MSRP is probably as good as you can realistically expect. I found a number of dealers that were willing to sell at MSRP without the premium, but you have to look for them. Even at that, you may still pay top dollar since nearly all the trucks we looked at had the full-up options package, which probably helps defray the negative margins that FMC eats to be able to sell the truck. So you have two options, in my mind: 1) Place the order for exactly what you want, and plan to wait 3-5 months, or: 2) Wait until a couple of months after the 09's come out, and get in the game full-scale then. Be prepared to beat the bushes, and take either a FEH or MMH, or the Mazda Tribute Hybrid, which should hit the rest of the country next year. We bought our MMH a month ago, and used a buying service (Costco) to lock in the price with a dealer that was a member of the program, on a vehicle that had just been delivered. To give you an idea of the scarcity, it was on the other side of DC from our home. If I had been completely off the street, the dealer might have hit me with the premium, but he would have caught hell from the buying service, so with his markup, the cost was right at MSRP. We bought the car the day after it had been delivered, so you need to be on your toes, have your financing lined up, and all that jazz. Since then, we've come across another 1/2 dozen buy opportunities, none with a significantly better price to make me kick myself.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the folks with the long delays after ordering a FEH were all in Canada. Perhaps because I'm 1/2 Canadian, and 1/2 USA by ancestry, I'll only have to wait 1/2 as long in metro DC area? :)
Recent inventories & buying experience?
by baysailor on Sun Jan 20 19:40:21 PST 2008
Folks, I am new to this forum, only started looking for either a FEH or MMH a week ago. Had a 02 Mazda Tribute for two years and really liked the car, wife gave it up to our daughter in Texas. She wants the hybrid - bad - and I'm probably going to go along since the last 2 car buying decisions have been mine. I've seen on the message board a lot of frustration about ordering delays, which I may not want to go thru. Also, there are several dealer locally that seem to have inventory, but the trucks all have the full boat of accessories, and my guess is that all (or at least most) of the ones shipped to dealers are like that to maximize dealer and FMC profits, since they're not making money on these, or are just barely. So my question is, if I want to get one of these (either type) by April, can I trust the system to work on a special order, or do you think I'll be forced to just get the best deal I can locally. There are about 8 showing up as available in the DC/MD area. Also, what types of incentives or discount buying services, like Costco, are available that the dealers will take? Cheers,
