Re: real world MPG for AWD taurus x [joes11]

I have a Taurus X Limited FWD. I can get mileage anywhere from 0 MPG (idling) to 29 MPG going 60 MPH on a flat freeway. Five minute errands are the worst for gas usage. I find my mileage drops tremendously when the engine is cold. It almost pays to drive faster when you first start to get it warmer quicker (but no high RPMs when cold for longer life). Taking my kids to school and errands around town is the worst. Lots of idling, the engine is cold, lots of starts and stops. In a week at home doing nothing but kid shuttle I got under 15 MPG one week. So what you say makes sense. This type of driving is where Hybrids excel. In my work commute, which is 70% freeway, I get ~23 MPG average. Last week I started on the highway and had 27.1 MPG indicated after 40 miles. But then I hit the residential area, and with lights, stops, and starts, the average MPG quickly dropped down to my usual 23 MPG. On some occasions, like vacation trips when I'm just doing freeway and being very careful, I can get over 26 MPG, but that's rare.

The dealer only makes a couple $K on each sale, depending on the deal made. So if they can't make that small profit anyway, they probably don't care about the sale in the least, especially if they're going under and losing everything after all.

Sounds like a great deal. I can't imagine the car getting much lower. A year ago I happily paid $32K new for my slightly less equipped T-X Limited (everything but moonroof and second row heated seats). And I'm still extremely happy with my Taurus X, even at that price. Being used, buy a good all-inclusive extended warranty. The warranty price is the same no matter how many goodies you've got installed.
Re: Is a $10K discount within reach? [rainmakr]

Don't start with the MSRP. For better accuracy on the deal possible, start with the Invoice price which may be $5K below MSRP, depending on options. You can get Invoice from many places, including Consumer Reports for a few bucks. Last year, I bargain hunted between dealers and eventually got my Taurus X FWD Limited at $300 below Invoice. But in today's tough economy, you may be able to get $1000 below invoice, especially at the end of the year clerance with a lot of the Taurus X's going into the recycling bin out back. Then ask for the cash back deals on top of this. Also, if you're willing to wait, you can get another $500 off by being a member of American Quarter Horse Association for 30 days. Go to www.aqha.com and check on the deals and become a member. In my opinion the Taurus X is a steal of a deal, especially with the discounts. I've had mine for 8 months now and am still extremely happy with the car every time I drive it and use another one of use all the great features.

I'm not in the market to buy a Ford product anytime soon, but I would guess you can get the equivolent of the $3,000 "loyalty" cash regardless if you are a Ford owner. It's really just a ploy to make you feel special. Every dealer has a bottom line price and there are a dozen ways to get there. The "loyalty" cash isn't much different than the bogus "employee pricing". I'm confident you can get the same price just being armed with good information of what these trucks/cars really go for to the well informed.

trades men will always need a truck. the question is 'are they buying trucks' the short answer is 'No'. People in the trades are feeling the slowdown as much as anyone out there. When you have a fleet of trucks sitting idle you start getting rid of them. There are alot of used trucks for sale. Car salesmen are trained like dogs to always make it out like their cars are selling well and you better commit now because they won't last long. It's the oldest trick in the book and is even used in the worst of time - unbelievable really.
