Ping: greener1 - I need info regarding your dealer
by veritasusa on Sun Oct 30 11:44:04 PST 2005
Could you please let me know the name and location of your dealer? I could use a concrete example to offer when I escalate my noise problems further - all the way up to the head of DC in the USA. The district service manager has just told me that Chrysler engineering has no idea of when they might come up with a fix for my noises and I reckon I'm going to have to invoke my demand for a replacement vehicle. But this is complicated by the fact that the 2006s are out, so it wouldn't be an even model year swap. Thanks for any info you can give me.

I also posted this in another forum. greener1 - Could you please tell me the name of your dealer and the location of it? I want to have a place to point to when I next go to battle with my dealer and my regional service manager. My 2005 is one of the last 2005s made (June of 2005), so DC should have known how to put them together by then. Not only do I have all the noises youdescribe, I also have a/c compressor whine and a very noisy, harsh suspension. Even half0ince cracks in asphalt taken at 15-20 mph produce noise and a shock transmitted through my steering wheel. It is as if the suspension has no compliance whatsoever. Even when fully wamed up, it reminds me of a car first started up on a frigid midwestern winter morning. As I said in my other post, I will give the dealer one more chance to do something concrete, then go to the top of DC in America and let the aggravation work its way back down - that tactic has worked for me with two other corporations over the years.

greener1 - How old is your car? What is the TSB # for the transmission noise and what dates does it cover? I ask because my T&C Touring manufactured in June 05 and purchased july 14 began making (or increasing) a variety of noises at about 100 miles (14 miles on clock delivered). These noises got progressively worse until stabilizing at about 300 miles. I just returned from third trip to the dealer (68miles round trip - I sure wish the dealer closest to me had had one in stock with the equipment I wanted). The service manager and I drove mine and also another Touring from the lot, one which I had driven on Monday to prove to myself that I wasn't losing my mind when I was told for the second time that the sounds coming from my car were normal. The service manager says that, to his ears, the Touring from the lot is noisier than mine. Rubbish! The three primary sources of noise are: 1. The exhaust system. The motorboat sound that only showed as a very subdued sound on acceleration now is a much louder noise that shows up strong at about 1500 RPM and is maddening by 2000 RPM, no matter what road speed. At interstate cruising speeds it is a steady growling, drumming noise that even drowns out: 2 The A/C compressor that whines at lower engine speeds and moans at at higher speeds. At low speeds around town, this competes with the exhaust noise for the most irritating sound. At low speeds and with the A/C off, the third noise is most apparent: 3. The transmission whines loudly in all indirect gears. Neither my 92 Grand Caravan or my 99 T&C Limited had transmissions that made even half so much noise. Mixed in with these sounds are the sounds from my tires. In the five other DC Stow n Go minivans I have driven or have ridden in, small road bumps at lower speeds are felt, but not heard. In my car, the bumps are heard as well. Tire noise is about what I would expect from OE tires and have been easily eliminated as the source of any unusual noises. Also, the driver's side window air deflector which I had installed by the dealer makes a rather loud wind noise at any speed over 30 mph. The passenger's side (and all the deflectors on other DC minivans I am familiar with) makes only a soft burble at worst, even though the adhesive strip holding it at the front refuses to stay stuck. The dealer has ordered another set. About the only way I can think of to describe what I hear from the driver's or front passenger's seats is to say it is as if all the sound deadening materials between the engine bay / front wheel openings had fallen out between 80 and 200 miles of usage. As of now, It will be August 31 before the regional tech service guy will next be at my dealer. If he gives no satisfaction, I will invite the owner of the dealership, who also drive a T&C at the moment, to drive my car and decide if it is really one he wants to have his name on. If still no satisfaction after that, I reckon it will be a case of finding some deaf guy who I can unload this car on and hoping that the 2006 KIA Sedona will be better. The 1977 Dodge Aspen I bought new back then was bad enough to put me off Chrysler products for 15 years. This van could be enough to put off them for life!

Interesting, my 2005 T&C Touring now has about 400 miles on it and I'm finding it noisier at slow speeds than at highway speeds. I hear a distinct medium-pitched whine when in any indirect gear, especially first or second, and also hear a lower-pitched noise in any gear that reminds me of exhaust burbling through the pipes. I'm certain the latter is not tire noise. I think I am going to have to test drive another one or two new ones to see if this is endemic to the model. I never had such noises in either my 92 Dodge GC with the 3.3 engine or in my 99 T&C Limited with the 3.8.

Actually, I think I made out a bit better yesterday when I bought the only T&C Touring in white with the trailer tow group left anywhere in central FL. We had looked in April for a Touring with trailer tow, leather, adjustable pedals, and side curtain airbags. We would have had to order and the balance after trade in would have been almost 11 grand including tax, tags, and dealer fee. Yesterday we bought a Touring with trailer tow, leather group, and luxury group. The luxury group had some stuff I didn't really need, but at least the car wasn't loaded up with DVD, satellite radio, sunroof, etc. The quoted price before trade and less TT&DF was $27,960. This is $680 BELOW today's Edmunds TMV of $28,640! The side curtain airbags option was the most expendable of our original wants and the backup sensor system included in the luxury group will probably prove to be more useful in the long run. I really don't know how good a deal I got on my trade in because it was also a 2005 model (Subaru Forester I had for a year to the day) and I can't find any online book values for a 2005. But the price the dealer offered was right in line with my best uneducated estimate for trade in value, so at least I won't wake up in the middle of the night wondering why in h--l I bought on such impulse. my total difference was $11,917 everything included. Not bad considering I had just been noodling around on the internet in the morning and learned that the best dealer around still had this one car left. I called, we drove the 30 miles to see the car in person early in the afternoon. and were home again before 5 PM with a car my wife and I both agree should see us out, considering our ages and driving habits.
Re: Towing Package [searcher3]
by veritasusa on Wed May 18 19:06:22 PDT 2005
The sticker price for the tow package is only about $600, so there must be something else on the van to account for the rest of the increased price. I have always gotten the tow package on my DC minivans because of the increased cooling for the engine and transmission, even though I have never towed anything. I live in FL. Besides, the tow package is now the only way to get something that used to be available separately - the load-leveling rear suspension. I have found that feature to be useful.
