aveo vs cobalt
by occupant1 on Fri Feb 22 00:20:06 PST 2008
The Cobalt currently has a $2000 rebate. Puts it square in line with equivalent Aveo pricing. A 4-door, 5-speed, AC/CD/MP3 Aveo costs around $12,500. After rebate, the Cobalt is about a hundred more. Aveo may also have a rebate but it isn't nearly $2000.
2008 LS sedan, 5-speed, no options

MSRP $14510 rebate $2000 discount $1210 selling price $11300 trade-in value $500 AirCheck voucher $3000 amount to finance $7800 + TT&L I'm waiting on the title to this junker car to arrive so I can get this Cobalt. It qualifies for this AirCheck voucher here in Dallas/Fort Worth because it is more than 10 years old and has been continuously registered for the last 12 months. It also failed an emissions test which is why I'm looking to replace it. Of course I bought it specifically so it would fail so I could trade it in on a new or newer car and get this $3000 voucher. If I had GM card rebates it'd be even cheaper. Edmunds TMV on the car is right around $12,100 so it's not a bad deal at all at $11,300. I also intend to have the dealer tint the windows nice and dark ($295) and I'm considering adding a center console armrest but haven't got a quote and was thinking of getting that from a junkyard anyway. Compared to my best deal on a 2009 Corolla base 5-speed with the same equipment plus its standard ABS (AC, CD/MP3, 5-speed, no other options, which didn't impress me much more than this Cobalt at all) at $15,785, it's a real steal of a deal. I thought about a Yaris but I wouldn't be able to live with the gauge cluster in the center of the dash. I still intend to shop the Nissan Versa and the Honda Fit before I commit to this Cobalt, but with the Auto Show coming, I expect Auto Show bonus cash at the Chevy dealer, taking another $500 or so off, and if I can, I may qualify for a college student rebate as well since I am a full-time student at TCC. I can't remember if that is $400 or $600 or even if it is still offered. I might be financing less than $7500 for a brand new car with less than a hundred miles on it if I do this right! The only used car I'm considering so far is a 2005 Taurus sedan with 60K on it for $5989, and it ALSO qualifies for the AirCheck voucher and the $500 for the Intrepid junker, so I'd be looking at $2489 plus TT&L for a 3-year old car with 60K miles and that also is NOT bad at all.
Dallas vs Houston

Last time I read the Houston newspaper I noticed that the vehicle sales price were several thousand lower than typical sale prices up here. For example, a local dealer has a basic white 2008 Suburban LS 1500 2WD, E85 iron block 5.3, 9-passenger, cloth interior, luggage cross bars, no other options, MSRP of $38425. The sale price after rebates and dealer discounts was $30995. A Houston dealer had a nearly similar vehicle listed, $250 higher MSRP ($38675) for a locking axle, same rebate, and the sale price was $28495. Why would there be a $2500 difference in price in only a 250 mile distance? $2750 if you count the locking axle. Granted, I'd rather have a Yukon XL than a Suburban, but the price difference between the Suburban and Yukon XL is only a couple hundred. But if I could get the Suburban for almost $3000 less than a Yukon up here, that'd be worth it. Maybe I need to start calling Houston GMC dealers to get a rock bottom stripper special price quote on a Yukon XL, 9-passenger, no other options?
$6445 cars and stripper specials

The Value Editions and other non-AC basic model cars (Kia Rio, Ford Focus, etc) are produced in small numbers and when a dealer gets one they want to get rid of it quickly and cheaply. So they'll advertise a ridiculous low number and a hundred people will come to get the car but there will be only one to sell and it will be most likely sold for closer to sticker price and well before the ad is placed in the paper. A Kia dealer here in DFW used to advertise their Kia Rios for $5888. Each dealer (they have 3 stores in town) would get one per month and they would run the TV spots all the time. At the time I was living in a hotel behind one of these dealers and I noticed a car with no hubcaps coming off the truck one morning. I checked it out, it had no AC, no radio, no power steering, no nothing. I knew it was the $5888 car and it was even in black. I went inside and tried to buy it for TWO HOURS. Finally they told me they couldn't finance it to me because their minimum financing amount was $5000 and I would have to put a third down, which would mean financing about $4400 and they simply wouldn't do it. I tried to have them add an extended warranty on the car (powertrain was covered 10yr/100K), window tint, floor mats, a radio, etc...I even offered to let them add the $2100 AC package which would have made the car at this point about $10K and even with half down it would be above their minimum and they flat out refused. Then the manager came out and said cash only. I had $3200 to my name at the time and couldn't do it. The car was sold to the next person who walked in the door after me that morning, who also lived in the same hotel and was waiting JUST LIKE ME. So if you want the stripper model, rent a hotel room by the dealership and wait it out!
2005 tahoe climate controls

I have a base 05 tahoe with the non-digital climate controls. Does anyone know if I can upgrade to the digital without major modification if I can get my hands on a digital unit. Thanks

You should be able to do better. I just purchased an 05 base model with 18 miles on it. White in color for $13,000 off sticker. Got the dealership to tint front windows and upgrade stock wheels to the 17". $36,765 truck out the door for $23,765. No trade was involved. That truck you are talking about should be atleast 15k or so off. The $35500 would include the 8k. You can get more as the 05's are cancer on the lots for the dealerships. Tim
