We did some studies on how much Prius cost and weighed the cost/benefit of various packages. We decided pkg#2 is the best bang for the buck. We tried various websites, Yahoo Auto, Edmunds and CarDirect to get a feel of how much people are paying. On Friday, Mercury News showed that Sunnayvale Toyota is selling 20 for 22388 (~$500 above invoice). Fremont Toyota has TWO @ 21288. I called Fremont Toyota and the sale person took 2 hours to return my call stating that these two ARE equipped with pkg #2 and told me to come in quickly. At that time, I was already at Sunyvale Toyota test driving one. The sale person (John G.) is amicable and knowledgable. When we returned to the dealership and I put Fremont Toyota's quote in front of them, they came back with records showing that these two cars actaully have pkg # 1 only. True or false, I can't tell since I did not visit Fremont Toyota. We had a brief pricing negotiation. I was trying to ask Sunnyvale to bring down the price (21288 + pkg#2 cost) but they only said, give us a firm quote from any dealer and we will match it. The discussion was conducted in a courteous way (unlike the one I did in another Toyota 15 years back). It was a vigorous but civil haggling. Later, I got a quote from Daly City Toyota for 22150. Sunnyvale matched it and we picked it up on Saturday. The whole process took a bit over 2 hours. We also purchased 4yr/55K service contract but declined the "extra care" package. Both are provided by Toyota. When we were about to leave, 4, 5 staffers got around and shook my hand -- corny but it did feel good.
