Questionable business practices and sleazy atmosphere
Written by 2015buyer on 10/14/2015
bought a used car. I think that ultimately I may have got a decent deal on the car, but time will tell. I don't appreciate being lied to. The transaction itself was pleasant enough with Ali and Ahmad. However, the transaction was handled poorly with what appeared to be deceitful practices. Do not take at face value what you are told, and ask for proof of everything you are told. If you care to read more, the details are below. 1. I was first told on the phone that the car was on the lot. Then I was called and told that the manager had taken the car home and that he was at at soccer game (by Ahmad). Then I was told that he was returning it from being inspected (Ahmad). All of this was an inconvenience since I was going to drive 45 minutes from Santa Cruz in the morning to see the car, and had to wait until the "manager" brought it back to the lot. This was the first hint that something was wrong with the professionalism of the dealership. 2. I was then told (Ali) that the car could not be certified pre-owned because Stevens Creek was not a Mazda dealer, but that it was being inspected at a Mazda dealer that was owned by the same company, and that the reason it couldn't be certified was because they could only certify cars that were on their own lot. This seemed odd at the time. Later it turned out it is not a Mazda dealer at all, but a Nissan dealer in Fremont. 3.I was told that the car was being inspected because there was a buyer in South California who required the inspection prior to purchasing (Ali). I was told that the car was being brought back by the manager from the inspection at the Mazda dealer in Fremont. It later turned out that this inspection probably did not exist, and maybe the buyer did not exist either. 4.The car showed up late, driven by a man with a cane, along with a woman with a dog. They got out of the car and said something about thanks for the loan of the car, with all the salesman at front of the door snickering and hushing them, since there were buyers there. It seemed unlikely that they were the "manager" who I had been told had driven the car home. 5.When I test drove the car, there was a paper in the car indicating a "transfer" from another location, Fremont, which I believed to be due to the inspection. I asked Ali about it and he said that it had indeed been at Fremont for the inspection. In retrospect, since I have not been able to obtain the inspection report, it is unlikely that the paper was a record of an inspection, but some other transfer of which I was not made aware. 6. I was told that the inspection report, for the inspection done the day before, would be given to me the Monday following my purchase (Ali). In good faith I purchased the vehicle. Otherwise I would have had my own inspection. Now I believe that the inspection was not performed. 7.The vehicle history was suspect, as it was a 2014 and it could not be ascertained what its history had been with the dealers. It only had less than 4,000 miles, yet had some serious wear, suggesting heavy use, if only for a brief time, underscoring the need for ascertaining there had not been unusual wear and tear on the car. 8. After several communications and a week after I purchased the car I was texted a copy of a vehicle inspection report. This report had a Nissan header (or any address of where it was done and not a Mazda shop), did not have any signatures of the person who did it, had a date in August a month before the claimed inspection, and had an incorrect VIN number. This is evidence that there was dishonesty in representation of the inspection, if it occurred at all. 9. The day following purchase, a dashboard sensor came on, indicating that the car likely had not been inspected any time recently. 10. Repeated texts asking for the inspection report were answered by communications asking me to call (from salesman, the manager, and then dealer manager) to discuss any "concerns" without answering the question of whether an inspection had been done, or why I could not get the report that supposedly had been done, and had been promised to me, could not be provided. I was repeatedly asked what would "make me happy". The Nissan report, a bunch of check boxes, without a signature, was meaningless. 11. It is noteworthy, that in contrast to other dealerships in the area, it is impossible to get the names or contact information for staff at Stevens Creek Jeep Dodge. These evidences of dishonesty are consistent with prior comments on Yelp. I might add, that they are quite aggressive in asking for immediate decisions in the transactions. I would never buy another car from this dealership.
