I have been drawn to 911s since I was 8 years old and saw a stunning blue 930 turbo go past the family Ford. I knew I had to own a 911 someday when I was driving a Subaru WRX STI on the interstate near Riverside California and a highly tuned 993 pulled up even for a moment, then dropped the hammer and disappeared like an F-14 off the deck of a carrier. My wife and I spent this last year in extensive car research and opportunity-cost analysis and finally concluded that we could stop waiting for the distant utopian future when affording a 911 would be easy and instead commit now. We agreed only the Carrera GTS provides the ideal combination of RWD, N/A, manual, rear seats for the kids, and widebody for traction (OK, actually the widebody is for the fantastic looks). We looked locally but no GTSs with the options we wanted were available. Finally, on the Porsche pre-owned car locator website I noticed a perfectly optioned meteor grey GTS. The only problem was the 1378 miles between my demanding workplace and this car. After two days of longing I sent an e-mail to Beverly Hills Porsche just to ask about the price. Even though it was nearly 10pm in California I received a reply right away. My inability to take the time to travel to California made me think that the only sensible action was hoping and waiting for a similar car to come up for sale locally. However, the salesman, Glen F., explained to me on the phone that he had sold many Porsches to distant customers and a well-defined method exists. At my request he sent pictures of the seat bolsters, shallow angle of the doors, and the underside of the car so I could better evaluate the condition of the car. After negotiating price and enclosed-trailer shipping I committed to a deposit and Glen overnighted the purchase documents. Even after I placed a deposit Glen answered my every question (many of them were asked late at night and received answers that same night) and did additional work to get me everything I wanted. At my request he took the car to their master tech for a VAR/DME readout, and when I asked for more high resolution photos he made me a 10 minute walk-around HD video where he pointed out every possible flaw in this used car’s paint and interior and wheels so I would know exactly what to expect. Glen even had a small scratch in the interior (from the previous owner) fixed and also ordered me a replacement front lip since the previous owner had put a few scrapes on it. I simply signed the well-organized papers at the “x” and mailed them back. When Glen received my completed papers with cashier’s check he shipped the car on the same day. 3 days later my wife and I watched our “newly adopted family member” roll out of the enclosed (as promised) trailer and found the condition of the car to be exactly as shown to us in the photos and HD video. The entire process took only 9 days. Even now, after the sale, Glen answers all my e-mails within hours and my texts within minutes. In many ways it was easier than doing a local deal because Glen worked around my schedule and streamlined the paperwork for me. Now I’m only waiting on my own state’s license plates, but that will be easy too because Beverly Hills Porsche hired a company to take care of it for me. I understand Beverly Hills Porsche sells cars to A-list celebrities and yet rather than belittling me in comparison I feel they treated me and my time with the same respect and deference that some may reserve for big stars. I highly recommend buying the babied and frequently traded-in Porsches of Beverly Hills through the professional and accommodating Glen F.!
