As far as I know, the cost of cars did not increase between those produced from March - April. For cars that were already produced before January and on dealer lots, the invoice price did not change. Perhaps what happened is that the dealer was assuming you were going to buy a car already in stock that was produced before January, or did not pay close attention and quoted a newly ordered car based off of the pre-January cost.

Back in January GM had price increases of $500-$1000 on just about every model due to increased steel, energy, material, etc. costs.

I placed an order for my CTS today. DI/automatic with PDW & PDR. The MSRP was $41,965. Signed a contract for $39,233. I believe the price was fair. He made money. I saved money. The point of bargaining isn't to squeeze the last dime out of the other guy or to brag about how you got that last dime. Many dealers are still getting full MSRP for every CTS they can get. I talked to my father's dealer In Port Richey, Fl last week. He did not have a single CTS on his lot, and he wouldn't take a cent off MSRP when his next shipment arrived. I also spoke with a dealer friend in PA who told me he can sell everyone he can get for full MSRP within a week of it hitting his lot, but he offered me $2,000 off if I wanted to order and wait. The car business is tough, so I don't begrudge a dealer for getting what he can. Nor am I upset that my friend didn't offer me as good a deal as I was able to get elswhere. What you can do depends on local demand. A dealer with ample inventory will deal, but one who has a short inventory will not.

Here is what to do. Let's assume MSRP of $35k. Residual Value of 50% = $17.5k. 36 months for lease. 4% Lease Percentage (sometimes, this is called a money factor which in this case is .04/24 = .001667). Sell Price of Car of $33k. $1k rebate. $0 cap cost reduction. $600 lease aquisition. $500 dealer fee. Capitalized Cost = $33k - $1k + $500 +$600 = $33.1k. Your Monthly Depreciation = (Cap Cost - Residual )/ Months of Lease ($33.1k-$17.5k)/36 = $433.33 Your Monthly Interest = (Cap Cost + Residual) * Money Factor (($31.1k + $17.5k) * 4%)/24 = $81.00 Total Payment = $433.33 + 81 = $514.33, before taxes. In this example, I rolled the acquisition fee and dealer fee into the lease payment. Your startups would be first month payment, any registration, tag, title, and security deposit. Damon

One more question for you. On your lease contract, it should say what rebates and/or $ amount of the rebates that were deducted from your capital cost. Do you have that figure handy? I too am coming up on a GMAC lease end soon, and am wondering if there are some program benefits that they applied to your deal that I might be also eligible for. Thanks - Damon
