but, you might want to drive the sport package, to make sure you like the ride, drive and seats.... I would second that suggestion. You would never think folks would complain that an SUV "rode to rough" or was "too sporty" but you do hear that from folks trying the X3 w/sport. To each his or her own, of course :) Dennis

If you BUY a car (or anything else) the state part of the tax is 7%. In your case and mine the local tax is 2.25%. On large ticket, single item purchases (a car, plasma TV, etc) the locals can only collect on the first $3,200 of the item. So if you BUY a car you would pay 7% on the full purchase price, and 2.25% on the first $1,600 and 2.75% on the next $1,600 ($80 total). On a lease, it is done more or less the same way. Rather than have you pay 9.25% on top of each payment, they have you pay the local option tax up front ($80) and only add the state tax to the payment. This is to your advantage in almost every case. For example, if your payment was $500 for 36 months you pay $535 x 36 = $19,260 + the $80 up front. If they taxed local on the payment, then you would pay $546.25 x 36 = $19,665 which is more money. Obviously, on a higher dollar car with a payment this would save even more (on a $1,000 a month lease it saves over $900 over the course of a 36 month lease). Does this make sense? You go ahead and pay the local tax on the first $3,200 of a single big-ticket item up front, then avoid the local tax for the rest of the lease. So just figure on $80 for the local tax, plus tags, dealer fees, lease acquisition fee, etc at signing, then 7% on top of the monthly payment for state tax. Dennis

The state tax rate is 7% and is applied to the monthly PAYMENT. It also applies to any cap cost reduction you make - any money paid at lease signing to reduce the cap cost (NOT acquisition fees, dealer fees, etc). You also pay the local option tax up front (the city/county part of the sales tax). This is your local tax rate (your rate - 7% state) on the first $1,600 and 2.75% on the next $1,600. In my county, the local rates is 2.25% on top of the 7% state rate, so the up front local option tax due on a car SALE or LEASE is $80 ($1,600 x 0.0225 = $36 + ($1,600 x 0.0275 = $44) = $80). If your local tax is 1.25% on top of the state 7%, then you would pay $64 in local option tax, 7% on any cash you put down to reduce the price of the truck, and then pay 7% on whatever the payment works out to be. Example: $300 and month payment = $321 ($300 x 1.07) with tax. Dennis
2003 325i Update Part 2 ... Long
by paulac1 on Wed Oct 01 05:16:49 PDT 2003
Well, the dealer called late yesterday afternoon and agreed to meet our price of $32,450 for the 2003 325i. My wife and I (she wrote the above posts ... I'm writing this one) were cautiously optimistic. We arrived at the dealer, filled out several forms, waited approximately 1 hour, and then sat down with our salesman. He promptly added a $299 doc fee to our previously agreed price of $32,450. I firmly, but politely refused to pay the doc fee. Keep in mind, that I was offering $950 over dealer cost (calculated as 3% over invoice minus the $1500 "rebate" for 2003s). The sales manager entered, told me that "The doc fee was not negotiable ... I make my salesmen pay this fee" ... incidentally, the part about "make my salesman pay this fee" sounded wierd, but at any rate, we stuck to our firm offer of $32,450. We politely shook hands and left the dealership. I would have gladly paid a small doc fee, but I absolutely refuse to pay the $299 doc fee. As a point of refernce, our last auto was purchased new in 2000 (as an 01 model) ... we paid 3% over invoice ... including ALL fees. Previously, we paid a $49 doc fee when we purchased a new car in 1996 (as a 96 model). Of course my wife and I are disappointed, but this is not the end of the world. I am very encouraged by bmnick's purchase ... add the StepTronic ($1200) to his car and that is what we would like to have. In fact, the reasons we chose this particular 3 revolved around the fact that it was not bloated with premium, cold weather, and other packages we neither need or desire. Bmnick ... if you are out there, we would like the name and phone number of your dealer/salesman. Finally, part of the problem we are fighting is dealer monopoly. We live in Knoxville TN and there is only a single BMW dealership in this area ... Grayson BMW. There are other dealerships in Nashville, Chattanooga, and Tri-Cities ... we will most likely work with them over the next few months to find the car we want at a fair dealer profit. Thanks for everyone's help.

instead of writing a letter, I will just vote with my dollars and buy elsewhere. A letter will only get me an obligatory "What is it going to take to get your business back?" call from a manager. And this dealership is too far gone for that (in my experience). I answered the question about the job, because I am an attorney and wanted to let them know I was serious and had the cash/credit. I went there 100% ready to buy (right car, color, and options)...until they lied about the amount of the incentive and told me that they'd only sell at MSRP. At the end (after a tour of the facility), the salesman did mention that he'd love to sell me a car and that way I'd never have any issue about them not having a loaner available when I dropped my car off for service, because if there are two people wanting a loaner, one of whom purchased elsewhere, they'd give it to the customer. Real Impressive. Guess I will be making that drive from Nashville to buy in Memphis.

Showed up at the dealership, trade in ready to go and ready to buy a 2003 330, and my Nashville BMW dealer says that the incentive is only $1,500 and all this information online about invoice pricing really isn't accurate. Says that they'll cut a deal for MSRP minus the 1,500. My question is: if I buy in another city, will I create any problems for myself in my home city (i.e. service help, etc.)? Thanks in advance
