Buying a car from a BMW Car Dealer

is this lease good? by garyhun on Mon Jun 20 11:51:59 PDT 2005

Hi guys, I believe nobody should buy anything on loan he couldn’t afford otherwise. Having said that, I just got this leasing offer on a 325 BMW. It seems suspiciously good, but I haven’t done a leasing ever so I don’t see where the catch is, where I’m misled. (I’m a self-employed guy so I could use the tax advantage.) I’d appreciate your help. (This is Raleigh-Durham area, NC.) Retail value (MSRP) 33,020 Net sales price 34,470 Lease end value 63 %, 20,802 36 months Money factor: 0.00305 [what’s this anyway?] Cash cap reduction 4,500 (that’s how much I’d pay upfront) Acquisition fee: 825 (can I negotiate to lower it to the recommended 625?) Tag/title 62 Doc fee 398 (isn’t it too much, isn’t it negotiable?) Adjusted cap cost: 29,345 (33,020-4500+825) Tax rate/amt 3 % (what’s this, which is better, higher or lower?) Base montly rental: 401.94 = 390.23+11.71 (tax) Amount due at start: 5,510.74 (4,500+401.94+ something else, what’s that?) Two more questions: If the MSRP 33,020, how much can be negotiated from that? (When I was leaving, the sales guy already mentioned 500). How low usually can you negotiate the lease end value %? Is it realistic to get a 55 %? Thank you in advance (sorry for being lengthy), Best to you all, Gary

Re: Question about lease and extras... [ragazzonc] by ragazzonc on Sat Jun 11 10:21:11 PDT 2005

With kyfdx's excellent information in hand, I got in touch with the dealership's management about what seemed to me the sneaky way I ended up paying for two things I had insisted during negotiations I didn't want (window etching and and treatment to help keep the car clean). I noted that I had thought of having an alarm installed as well as the CD changer (I haven't gone IPOD/mp3 yet) and suggested that I would be content to leave the terms of the lease as they were if they installed those items in lieu of the two things I really wasn't interested in paying for. The Dealership management was extremely apologetic about the situation, in essence agreeing that the practice of their finance man had been unacceptable (he claimed to give me something for free when it clearly was not--I had been suspicious of the claim of a "freebie" but he'd insisted it was in fact without cost to me). They agreed to install the CD-changer and the alarm for the amount I had been charged for the etching and protective treatment AND to give me the etching and protective treatment (hey, at least it'll amount to a free car wash which I already need). I'll be better informed next time I go in to negotiate for a car but I'm content with this end result. Thanks again kyfdx. If you're ever in the area of Durham, NC I'd be happy to buy you a drink (or a coffee or a juice or a bottled water)!
