Buying a car from a BMW Car Dealer

Re: Buying from a distant dealership. Hassel later on worth the extra savings? [vtau] by drddo on Sun Aug 15 16:38:32 PDT 2004

I bought from a dealership in Chicago and I lived in the Detroit area at the time (since moved to Northern Michigan). I saved about $1000 by doing so. I took delivery at night, and was in a hurry to get going and didn't notice a small scratch on the front fender. In the morning I also noticed a few of the LCD lights were not lighting up on my radio display. I contacted the dealer in Chicago and they told me to take it to a local dealer, and they would make sure everything was taken care of. The dealer in Detroit gave me a loaded X3 as a loaner, and replaced the radio (warranty) and buffed out the scratch all at no cost to me. I've had my 325xi for almost 2 months now, and love it more and more each day! If the price difference is a big one, I say go for it on the out of town deal. -drddo

Still looking by drddo on Tue May 18 14:12:36 PDT 2004

Well, it seems the local Detroit dealers would rather not have my business. They did come down a bit more, but still around $700 above what I am being quoted from multiple dealers in the Chicago area. Since plane tickets only cost $109, I can't pass that price up. I tried to point out that they were still making a tidy profit at what I am presenting to them, but my logic fell on deaf ears. Too bad, both salesmen I was dealing with here are really nice guys!

Re: So far... [gordonwd #1282] by drddo on Thu May 13 09:59:25 PDT 2004

Thank you to everyone for the input so far. I would prefer to buy locally, if for nothing else but the convenience. The service thing is not a big deal for me, since I will be moving to Northern Michigan in late July or August. The closest dealer to me will be in Traverse City, about an hour away. The Detroit dealers will be a 3 1/2 hour drive, so I doubt I'll be using them for routine maintenance. The salesman I met with at Bavarian said he would set up a relationship with the TC folks for me, to ensure I have the same treatment from them that I would bet if I bought it up north. I imagine if he can swing that, than anyone can. He's currently staying put at $2000 off of MSRP, $1000 over the Chicago guys. I'm probably going to swing by Erhard after work to see if they are willing to do any better. If no one in Detroit is willing to watch the Chicago numbers, I'm not sure what will be "close enough" to avoid the hassle of buying out of state. I figure I'll be willing to give up $300-$400 but not much more.

Re: Incentive [kyfdx #1263] by drddo on Wed May 12 07:36:26 PDT 2004

Thanks for the input. The more I read about the incentive, it seems to clearly state take delivery BEFORE June 30. I guess the dealer I spoke with is either not clear on the topic, or just wants me to order something without the incentive. I live in the Detroit area, and I hear that dealing is very difficult since all of the local dealerships are owned by two brothers. I sent out E-mails across Ohio, Indiana and Illinois in hopes of either getting a better price from somewhere with more competition, or at least some numbers to bargain with with the boys back home. Does anyone know of any dealers in the above mentioned states I should be sure to get a hold of? Thanks! -drddo

BMW Deals in Michigan by pmhtv on Tue Jan 14 09:44:51 PST 2003

Looking to purchase a 2003 325i manual in the Detroit/Michigan area. Many of the dealers around here are arrogant and not willing to negotiate - any advice or information on a good dealership? Also, is $1500 off MSRP about the most I can expect on this car?
