Buying a car from a BMW Car Dealer
"Would you be able to break down what your deal looked like in the end? Payment wise and all?" Okay: (By the way it's a gorgeous car. I'm in love: Space Grey metallic with Creme Beige leather and dark walnut trim. The lines of the car are gorgeous in the flesh, even better than the pictures. I had to order the car to get the manual trans and the colors I wanted. Waited a bit over six weeks to get it.) 2008 328i Coupe, Sport, Premium, Navi, PDC, manual trans, metallic paint. MSRP $43,250, agreed price $40,560 plus floor mats at no charge ($130 value), discount from MSRP $2820, or about $600 over invoice. Payment $555.66 plus 7.75% tax = $598.72 per month Drive off: first payment + DMV fees ($353) + security deposit + tire and doc prep fees ($54 total) = $1605. Zero customer cap cost reduction (cash down) Rolled into lease: bank fee $825 (this is high, the minimum is $625, the max they can charge is $825). Not certain what my final money factor was, but I did get the proper reduction in payment from my security deposit as a new BMW customer. With the above details, the payment should be about $10 lower if I got the "buy rate" MF of .00190, but I think it was more like .00205. (remember, the buy rate in November was .00190, but it went up ten points in January, so it's now .0020.) So the dealer made back a few hundred bucks on the MF and the bank fee at full boat, but the overall deal was discounted so much, this didn't matter to me. Overall, this was the best deal I got from emailing nine dealers through Edmunds and negotiation by email. Two others were willing to go $1250 off MSRP. The rest didn't want to deal at all, and this was in the last few days of November! So emal a lot of dealers if they're available to you, and be willing to drive a bit. My dealer is 60 miles away and I have about 10 dealers that are closer. I hope this helps.
I just ordered a 328i sedan, and wanted to share my experience. First off, thanks to all of you participating on this forum. I can’t imagine I would have done as well as (I think) I did without all the knowledge I’ve gotten from reading this and other forums, like Bimmerfest and e90post. This will be my fourth BMW, starting with a 1999 323i, then a 2003 325iT, and currently a 2004 X3 (through ED). I bought the last 2 through the same CA at my local dealer. I’d gotten good, no-hassle deals before, and expected the same this time, especially as a repeat customer. My target, based on what I’d read online, was Edmunds invoice plus adv. and MACO, plus $500; plus a lease at the buy rate and $625 acq. fee. I would have gone up $500 over that to maintain the relationship with the CA and dealer, and avoid having to shop around. But the offer wasn’t close, at $1000 over invoice, $825 acq. fee and buy rate plus .0003. Maybe I was more aggressive this time on the price I was asking for (basically was getting half-way between invoice and MSRP before), and it was the first lease for me (so we weren’t negotiating lease terms before), and the last one was an ED. Also, the CA went from being the internet guy to a salesman on the floor, so I don’t know if that affected the deal he could offer. I wanted to get the deal arranged within a week, as the March lease rates on the 328i sedan were good (.00125) and I wanted to lock that in. I sent out 8 email inquiries to 6 Bay Area dealers and 2 others, asking for the above terms. I would have sent out more, but surprisingly, many dealer websites give you no way to correspond just by email (no way to send comments, and they only want to contact you by phone. To me, that’s not “internet sales!”). In some cases, I got around this by looking at their sales team info to find the internet guy, then emailed him directly. I got responses from only 4 dealers. One said he could do the $500 over invoice but not the lease terms. One offered $250 over invoice, but gave no lease terms, and didn’t respond to my followup email asking for these. One responded but never gave a price. I ended up ordering the car from Peter Pan BMW in San Mateo. The CA accepted the terms I offered from the start. I met with him on Friday and there were no surprises, his figures matched mine. He had already done a vehicle inquiry in the system and gave me a printout for a car already in production (status 150-production started), configured as I wanted it. The CA was very professional, and the whole thing took only 15-20 minutes. The CA suggested I put a little bit ($100) down, which I did, to lower the payment below $500, to reduce the amount of the security deposits (I planned on doing the 7 additional). So here’s what I ended up with: 328i sedan, Titanium Silver, grey/walnut, Steptronic, premium, nav, satellite, folding rear seats. MSRP: $41,345 Invoice (including adv. and $400 MACO): $38,645. Sales price: $39,145 ($2,200 under MSRP) Lease terms: 30-month, 15k/yr, $100 down, $625 acq. fee, MF .00076 (.00125 - .00049), 66% residual. Tax rate 7.75%, license $318, tire fee $8.75, doc fee $45. Monthly payment: $499.56 Drive off: $4982.55 (1st pmt., $4000 sec. deps., $100 down, license and fees, and $11.24 tax (on the $100 and the $45). Car should arrive in late May. I had originally wanted to do an ED in September to coincide with the Frankfurt auto show, but couldn’t due to a work conflict. Instead, I’ll plan on going in 2009. This is why I did the 30-month lease; so the lease would expire in Nov. 2009, around the time I’d get my next car from a Sept. 2009 ED.
Jeff........That's the info I needed! It works out to the penny now that I see what they did. They marked up the 625 acq fee to 925. (45,595 + 925 = 46,520). They used a money factor of .00255, which makes your pre-tax payment exactly 614.37. So they made a quick 300 on the acq fee and 1100.88 on your financing. Same 1400 as before, just a little faster to them. What city and dealer was this? That's what will help others. What the hey....it's only money. Enjoy it when it gets here. In the meantime, get yourself three walnut shells and a pea, practice a little, and win some of it back when you take delivery.
This is the following offer I got from Long Beach BMW in CA: 2006 BMW 330i Sedan Monaco Blue/Sparkling Graphite Metallic exterior/Black Dakota Leather interior/Burl Walnut Wood trim Steptronic Automatic transmission Premium Package Sport Package Comfort Access MSRP: $43,345 + tax and lic. OFFER: $41,560 + tax and lic. This looks to be about $600 more than the offer given to another fellow in this forum at South Bay BMW: '06 330i ($36,600 / $33,485) Metallic paint ($475 / $430) (205) Automatic ($1,275 / $1,210) (ZPP) Premium Package ($2,200 / $2,000) (ZSP) Sport Package ($1,600 / $1,455) (322) Comfort Access ($500 / $455) (417) Rear Sunshade ($575 / $525) Destination ($695 / $695) (MSRP / Invoice) = $43,920 / $40,255. Internet Price = $40,255 + $330 advertising + $900 = $41,485 which is $1,230 over invoice, or $2,435 off MSRP. Has anyone found better in Southern California? Is this about as good as it gets? Thanks!
