BMW has been jacking up the price of leasing (lower residuals & higher MFs), while offering more financial incentives to those who buy, it wouldn't surprise me if they also became willing to negotiate at turn-in time. . .eventually. The only reason not to sell the car to someone who's been driving it for the last 3 years for more money than it would fetch otherwise is to encourage (force, really) a follow-on lease. Time will tell.

Is any of the $3000 due at signing cap cost reduction? I assume it is, as drive-off usually amounts to first month's payment, security deposit, disposal fee (unless it's a repeat lease), documentation fee & I think that's it. Normally comes out to $1200 - 1600, not $3K. So, when you say selling price of $37.5K, that may not be the capitalized cost -- you're probably reducing it another ~$1500, which is generally a bad idea. Your GAP insurance doesn't cover any down payment.

It's a bit like selling a car in this class with a manual transmission -- the market is smaller, but the people who want one definitely want it. It'll sell, but it needs to be marketed correctly & patiently. Go for it. Get what you want. Life is too short to worry too much about resale, IMHO.

I dunno, I can almost see the merit in leasing for three years first, particularly if it's your first experience with a BMW (as it would be for me), given how heavily the leases are subsidized these days. If the leases were straight-up, with realistic residuals & market interest rates, I'd be with you 100%. In fact, I have done -- I've never leased a car yet, though I've studied it fairly carefully a couple of times. If the car proves to be reasonably reliable & not one of the horror stories one hears about, buying it out at the end of the lease may not be all bad. Also, in my case, I'd really like a diesel 3-series, but doubt that any such will be avilable for at least a couple of years, and they may be hard to negotiate on for some initial period as well. Leasing for 3 years would give me the opportunity to enjoy a BMW for a very competitive monthly fee while I wait for the car I'd buy and hold for years, as I have my present vehicle. Now, if it were possible to negotiate a buyout at less than the stated residual, it'd be a no-brainer, but from what I've heard, it never happens. I've never come to grips with how BMW is able to lease based on a residual that isn't supported by the market when it comes time for them to sell the off-lease unit. Looks a bit like a house of cards to me. Oh well, it obviously works for them.

Hi Car Man, Thanks for the reply. I was quoted $33,420 as both the MSRP AND the selling price for the 325ia (the one I'm more interested in). Definitely room for negotiation. Thoughts? THANKS for all your help! Mark

"One dealer told me that you have 2 months after the incentive expires to take delivery, as long as the car was ordered during the time the incentive is offered." That doesn't agree with the dealers I have talked to. All my dealers have been telling me that I would need to take delivery before the incentive expires! Regarding your price, I think you should be able to get invoice, maybe slighly below, but it depends on your area. I know a local dealer that would probably want to charge $35.5K (after subtracting the $1200 incentive), while some dealers in areas of better competition would sell for under $34.5K.
