It was kind of happen chance, but MotorWeek (the PBS show) had a review of the new Avalon yesterday (I think you can see it via .wav on the website as well). First, they actually mentioned the word "Buick" several times when discussing it. Second, I really liked the exterior, but absolutely hated the interior with that plain, stainless steel center console. Very cheap looking for a car IMO. I think you picked the better car, frisconick!

They're totally different cars (obviously...) in many regards. IMO, the avalon is for those who want a Lexus-like drive (smooth, silent, almost not knowing they are driving on a road). This is not something good or bad, just a preference of some people. The TL, OTOH, is a swift, aggressive styled, performance auto. More for those who like the joy of driving and getting feedback from the road (again, neither good nor bad, just another driver preference). I personally don't like driving Lexus cars. They are very nice, solidly built, and never break down. They also aren't a "slouch" for speed with high HP engines. But they are very soft, spongy feeling, such that acceleration makes you afraid rather than confident. I don't think anyone has ever faulted Lexus/Toyota for lack of HP, just lack of tightness. Both are great cars. I really like the look of the Avalon, and I haven't driven it, but if it follows in the footsteps of previous Avalons, it will be soft and comfortable, but not aggressive and tight.
