Yeah, the tax is paid on every payment in most states, so if there's a hike in tax rate, it shows up on your next payment. Happened to me in LA before. Major bummer, should have used my friend's place in Orange County as my billing address...
Just got a TL Type S in CA
by vfa1520 on Sun Mar 30 21:39:27 PDT 2008
I wrote a post to the TSX form a few years ago when I was buying my wife’s TSX. The title was “Lying, Cheating and Stealing”. Basically, I was purchasing in the DFW area and got several quotes from local dealers. The first gave me a quote but would not honor it when I got there (Lying); the second quoted me a price, but then said the quote did not include destination, or options (Cheating). The third, Vandergriff in Arlington, gave me a great quote, got the car in the color she wanted from Kansas, and I spent less then 1 hr in the dealership picking it up. (Stole it from them) I have purchased many Honda and Acura cars over the years, but am still amazed at the tricks they try to play. I guess that I feel they are good cars and the dealers should be respectful also. I picked up my 2008 TL Type S in CBP/ES this passed weekend in SoCal. I had used this form for research and get ideas on what to pay. It seemed that getting a CBP/ES was going to be difficult. I called 10 to 15 dealers trying to find one that was in stock but had no luck. I knew there was at least one, I got a deal going with CarsDirect and they would have one delivered to my house from the LA area. I did get a call from the Acura dealer in the Car County Carlsbad in San Diego stating that the car I had requested had just come in. After a few emails, they agreed to match the best price I could get from a dealer in LA, and I would not have to drive so far to get it. (Lying) When I got to the dealer she tried to pull the bait and switch routine with me. They had a CBP/Taupe then tried to push me towards a Silver/ES TL. I had to laugh a little. When I told her that the color was wrong, she said, “I think the CBP/ES would clash really bad” I looked at her and said, “The folks at Acura who design cars for a living don’t think so”. :D Then she said, “Black seat are hot, and the Taupe would be cooler”. I had to laugh at her again, and say the TL comes with heat-rejecting green-tinted glass so it wouldn’t make a difference. I guess they will say anything to sell a car. Then she claimed that I had requested the CBP/Taupe; but she had already confirmed in email that she understood. “I know you have a busy schedule, but I just want to stay in touch and say that I have not forgotten about your interest in a new 2008 Acura TL TypeS (carbon bronze/Ebony-silver interior). Please keep me informed when the time is right for you to take a closer look. Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you. Best regards,” I was nice to her even though it was a major inconvenience and just started walking out. She followed and kept asking what dealer was going to give me the price we had discussed. I just said one in LA. She was not happy, and rudely stated that I bet they don’t have what I wanted and I should give a deposit to ensure they would meet the deal. I then got a call from a dealer in Temecula. (Cheating) They stated they had the car I wanted, and I asked for a quote. They sent me a quote that was “A special Quote just for me” It seemed ridiculously low. It should have been. In the fine print, way at the bottom, it said this quote was for a 2006 TL. Not even close. So after just a few weeks of looking for a deal that was lower then the CarsDirect price in my back pocket, I had settled on getting the car from the dealer in LA. I didn’t get a super great deal, but didn’t have to haggle for it either; they passed the 2K under invoice on to me, including the standard wheel locks and mudguards. They also had to dealer trade for it, something others wouldn’t even try. I got it from Acura of Mission Viejo. The Internet guys were great. Gave me all the info I could have asked for, and worked with my schedule to pick it up. :) The only part I disliked, was the time I had to spend in the dealership. They had the car and I had the cash, but it still took 2 or so hours to get out of there. Not that they pushed me to buy more stuff, just slow to process paperwork. I have to admit, the CBP and ES looks great. Love the car. Lots of things still to learn. The owners manual is thick. :confuse:
TL w/Nav, just purchased, 3/29/08
by scottc3 on Sat Mar 29 19:06:32 PDT 2008
I have purchased 3 cars lately - not by choice necessarily. The first car, a Toyota Prius, option 5, for me, as it was somewhat cheap and gets 49+MPG.. sold a Honda Odyssey Van to get this - and I love the car. After hard fought negotiations, I got the car for .85 of the list price, before all fees, tax and license. I have used this as my basis for a Honda FIT (for my son who had his car stolen in LA!!! But we had insurance which covered the loss!!) and the Acura TL for my wife. So, I used this as my reference for the 2008 TL w/Nav. I also added all weather mats and the wood grain interior kit (for free) so the base price offer was $36,940 x .85 = $31,399 before tax's and fees. I traded in a 2000 S80 T6 with 135,000 miles on it, got $3,500 (dealer started at $1,800 - I got up and started to walk out – the $3500 was Edmunds trade-in value – and I know I got ripped off a bit, the some things wrong with the Volvo) then got the $3,500. I really wanted $4,000 but my bottom line price was $3500. $31,399+$3140 (Tax and fees) = $34,539 - trade ($3,500) = $31,039, they did not take that deal so I added $161 to this (to cover their cost for wood trim kit and all weather mats – less than list price) and was out the door for $31,200. Realize the cost of the car was $34,539 really (w/o trade) out the door. Good luck to you all. Enjoy your purchase. Scott

That price is too high - especially with the 2009 models coming out soon. However, if you want to get one, the dealer may not have much selection (color) left. I live in LA and we have high tax. I had to pay 8.75% and I was able to get it $28.5k out the door.
Reference to TL buyers.

I bought my 2008 Acura TL w/Nav on 02-22-08. I have spent about 2 months researching what I want to buy, how much I should pay for it in current market and so on. I chose Acura TL over Lexus ES350 and Infinity G35. Reasons for choosing TL ES350 -- Reliability is not as good as it used to be according to owners reviews. Costs about $5000 more when compatibly equipped. G35 ----- Reliability is not as good as TL I am not a boy racer so RWD and more power don’t attract me. Leaving in Indiana, FWD is more practical. Costs about $3500 more when compatibly equipped. link title is good place to find MSRP & Invoice for cars. TL Base -------- MSRP $34,440 Invoice $31,750 TL w/ Nav ------ MSRP $36,940 Invoice $33,998 TL Type-S ----- MSRP $38,940 Invoice $35,832 *Price includes Destination Charge Currently, there is $2000 manufacture to dealer incentive only on purchase. Not on lease. Special financing is only available in select region. You have to ask dealer to find out about special financing. So here is what you should expect to pay when you are shopping for 2008 Acura TL. In large competitive market ( Bay Area California, La Area California and Houston, Dallas Texas etc...). If you have more than 6 to 7 or more Acura dealers in your area it is a large competitive market. Invoice less $2000(dealer incentive) less $500 to $1000 (dealer is more willing to share their 2% hold back). Bottom line is go for $2500 ~ $3000 below invoice. In medium size market (4 or 5 Acura dealers in your area) Invoice less $2000(dealer incentive) less $300 to $700 (dealer is some what willing to share their 2% hold back). Bottom line is go for $2300 ~ $2700 below invoice. In small size market (3 or less Acura dealers in your area) Invoice less $2000(dealer incentive) less $0 to $300 (dealer is not willing to share their 2% hold back). Bottom line is go for $2000 ~ $2300 below invoice. *Above target pricing applies to most shoppers, but individual bargaining skills, trade-in (give you less for your trade-in and lower the price on new car or vice-versa) and financing (shopper with bad credit score, dealers love people with bad credit because they see it as a chance to make big profit) could make the difference in pricing. * Try not to take the car that’s been sitting in the dealer lot for more then 2 months the max. You can find built month and year on the sticker on the inside of your driver’s door jam. Dealers want to move out old inventory, especially in smaller markets where turn over ratio is not as good as in larger markets. Unless dealer is willing to give you a substantial discount for it don’t take cars with over 50 mi and/or built in more than 2 months ago. After a test drive write down the VIN of the car you picked and make sure this VIN is what you see on the contract before you sign. Dealer add-on protections (leather protection, clear coat paint protection, under body protection etc…. are never recommended. No matter how dealer sweet talk you into it, it either not needed or way over priced. If you really want them check out your local detail shops. You could find better ones for less then half the cost. Dealer installed accessories -- Don’t take it unless you could have the dealer throw it in for free at the price you negotiated without installed accessories. Bottom line is don’t buy any accessories from dealer unless it’s totally free. If you want to buy any genuine Acura Accessories check out these sites. You could find it for a lot less then at your dealership. link title link title link title Dealer Documentation Fees -- Unfortunately for shoppers, there is no set price for this fee. You just have to visit different dealership in your area to find out what the reasonable documentation fee in your market is for yourself. I’ve read as low as $50 to as high as $500. It just varies by market. If dealer A is charging $100, dealer B is charging $125 and dealer C is charging $135 for documentation fee you know that the reasonable documentation fee in your market is $100. Check out this for your information. link title Other Charges -- Do Not Pay. you shouldn't have to pay anything other then Tax, Title, Registration, Documentation Fees, Extended Warrenty (if bought one) and Tire Tax. If you see anything else on bill of sales dealer is just trying what ever it can to make more profit on you. Extended warranty – You have to make the decision on this yourself. I didn’t buy one because when I decided to buy Acura TL reliability was a big factor. I don’t anticipate TL will have enough break downs to recoup what I spend on extended warranty. If you decide to buy one only buy Acura Care Extended Warranty (this service is provided and backed by Acura and good in any Acura dealer in the US) DO NOT buy third party extended warranty as they could be pain in the rear when you actually need to use your warranty. Followings are places where you could buy legit Acura Care Extended Warranty online at fair price. It’s honored at any Acura dealer in the US weather you buy it online or from dealership. link title link title link title * Acura will not allow online sales of Acura Care Extended Warranty beginning April 1. Tax, Title and registration fee – This is about the only thing that gets straight forward in car buying. Everyone pays same set amount that applies to your vehicle in your area. Unless you live in same county or city everyone pays different amount for this. Dealers would rarely play games on this because Uncle Sam is watching.
Re: Leasing a TL in Orange County, Ca [dimsumlo]

Hi dimsumlo, Did you speak with the fleet manager? I got the price from the Power South Bay Acura at the beginning of the year through the fleet department. This was the lowest number I got (without any negotiations) compared to other dealers around the LA area. However, they didn't have the color I was looking for at that time but had one coming at the beginning of Feb. I waited almost 3 weeks for the shipment and I got the car 2nd day after it arrived at the dealer. I don't know if this affect the pricing or not. Yes, the dealer was smaller compared with other dealers. But, they seems to move the car pretty fast.
