Lexus reliability ....... by prophet2 on Thu Jan 15 11:33:02 PST 2004

Even with their "relentless pursuit for perfection," even Lexus will come up with a lemon here or there. No one is "perfect." 113K before the transmission went out? Go talk with the Chrysler buyers!

back in paradise ........... by prophet2 on Thu Jan 01 17:40:48 PST 2004

My sister's TL purchase was finally completed with her taking American Honda's 60-month financing @3.9% APR. On last wrinkle was a suggestion by F&I about a 42-month lease. She'd get her $5000 down back with only her trade-in as a cap reduction. The monthly lease would save her another $12.50/mo. From my perspective, the lease didn't make sense for several reasons. The money factor was equal to an interest rate of 8.4% vs. 3.9% on the loan. The residual at the lease end was $19,535 vs. the 18 remaining loan payments to own the car totaling $8,550, the monthly payment savings of $525, and the $5000 down. That still leaves nearly $5,500 difference. The choice between leasing and buying will often come down to the numbers in the deals. Her past ownership of vehicles were 9 years ('78 280ZX), 7 years ('87 Legend L coupe), and 6-1/2 years ('97 Avalon XLS). The only car held for less time was her '95 Millenia on a three-year lease: the money factor on that was equal to 3.6% APR. That time, the buy rate involve 8.0% APR.

They wised up as the GSM got in the act and overruled the F&I guy. She got the 3.9% rate. The mere mention of me getting the ear of the VP was apparently enough. That plus their hope that I'll take delivery of the first '05 RL sometime in August 2004. It depends on whether the new RL appeals to me. There is a high probability that I'll take an anthracite TL in a couple of months. And keep my '96 RL as a spare set of wheels. I'll keep this incident in mind and remind them of it when working my own deal.

My sister called the dealer about the 3.9% rate she was told about. They claimed she can't get it because "they already turned the papers in." To whom? Sounds like getting jerked around. I'm calling the VP (son of the now semi-retired original owner), who runs all their dealerships, to complain about this. I've referred 80+ deals to them since the '90s, so he'd better hear me out! It can't be because she can't qualify with her 750 FICO! They say she has to pay the 4.9% APR. It isn't about the 1.0% spread: it's a matter of disrespect and bad faith!

Yeah .... RIGHT! by prophet2 on Sat Dec 20 15:59:25 PST 2003

Ditto! We were told on Tuesday, 12/16, that the 3.9% would be available on Friday, 12/19.
