Incredibly reliable vehicle

1997 Chrysler Town and Country 2 Dr LXi Passenger Van Extended

We just didn't have any significant problems with this workhorse vehicle. At 105,000 miles, it has never broken down. I simply don't have any complaints.

The space--this will hold everything!
Suggested Improvements
The brakes are a little squishy, so don't tailgate!
Terrible transmissions

Review
We owned a Dodge caravan before this T&C. We put 2 transmissions in it in 100,000 miles. We were skeptical about buying another Chrylsler van but we talked to the service manager at the dealership and he assured us that Chrysler had fixed their transmission problems, WRONG, Wrong and WRONG. We put 3 new transmissions in the 67,000 miles that we've had the van.WE bought it used with 53,000 miles so it could have had more go bad. You might think that maybe it is our driving habits but in our 55 yrs of driving experience these 2 Chrylser vans are the only transmissions we have ever had go bad. We are selling this hunk of transmission junk ASAP and will never buy another Chrysler product.

Still the King of Minivans

Review
I owned the T/C LXI since 1996 and it's been excellent. So far, only regular oil change and scheduled maintenance. It's very comfort to drive and to sit inside as passenger. I later installed a DVD and I plan to install a rear view camera too. Then I don't need to buy a new one for another 8 years I hope.
Favorite Features
Memory seat.
Suggested Improvements
Put a optional 8th passenger seat at the middle row.

Transmission Fixed?
Vehicle
1997 Chrysler Town and Country 2 Dr LX Passenger Van Extended
Review
This is our fifth Chrysler mini van because it is a comfortable ride and large space. Mileage is disappointing and never buy one without power train extended warranty. This is also our tenth transmission (two each).
Favorite Features
Seat adjustments and sound system.
Suggested Improvements
Transmission and rattles.
1997 Town and Country LXi

Review
Having owned 89 ES , 94 ES AWD This unit drives better, stops much better, is much quieter, window can be rolled down with the wind staying outside. The back seat is too high Lots of room, good tested milage however I would prefer the 3.3 rather than the 3.8 L. any thing for better milage. NOT AS GOOD LOOKING AS 94 ES series. Would have preferred to see the many improvements applied to older body style, which look much more stylish. Good car all around replace your fan belt, find a commerecial welder NON BODY MAN to weld your rusting struts and this unit will be with your for a long time.

T&C Transmissions
Vehicle
1997 Chrysler Town and Country 2 Dr LX Passenger Van Extended
Review
My wife loves the drive and efficiency of the T&C vehicle design. We have replaced the transmission 3 times: once just over 36k miles on a trip and Chrysler paid for the parts after our complaint but labor still cost me $1200. Second time at about 54k and third time at 63k. The 3rd time the Chrysler rebuilt transmission was covered for the parts again.
Favorite Features
Seats are comfortable, rides very quiet, plenty of cup holders.
Suggested Improvements
Need better reliable transmission!

Great T&C
Vehicle
1997 Chrysler Town and Country 2 Dr LX 4WD Passenger Van Extended
Review
Although I have heard many bad stories about the T&C we have had very little trouble from ours. After 165000 miles we have done a couple of tune-ups and replaced the brake pads a couple of times. The car is comfortable and reliable.
Favorite Features
The cruise is great and the seats recline. The surround sound is also good.
Suggested Improvements
One thing the van needs is the middle and rear windows to roll down for better circulation on not-so-hot days. Also, it needs wheels that are easier to clean. Plus, the driver's side middle seat needs to pop up for rear entry.

Bought one of the first Voyagers built in '84 - this T&C is our third Chrysler minivan, we traded 'em in at 150k miles, this one's got 125k. Have spent many times more on repairs on the '97 T&C as the other two combined! A real disappointment after two great cars we loved. We like this car, but hard to love one that requires frequent repairs. Have to think about it next time, but we will probably buy another T&C when we trade this one in - just hope quality of this model is back to the level it was in the 80's.
Favorite Features
Good acceleration, quad captains chairs, ease of removing seats. Dual rear doors is a great improvement. Corrosion resistance of the body is fantastic (lots of salt and snow in the winter)
Suggested Improvements
No question, reliability. Chrysler was in a real slump when this car was built.
Chrysler LXI

Buyer Beware. Make sure you purchase the extended warranty. Had to replace the transmission after 60,000 miles. Both driver and passenger electric window motors had to be replaced. Too many false sensor lights. Other than that, not a bad vehicle.
