Great van for the $$$
Vehicle
1996 Chrysler Town and Country 4 Dr LXi Passenger Van Extended
Review
The good: Amazingly comfortable seats. Wonderfully roomy. You can buy a used T&C for amazingly little. Very little critical maintenance...in 3 1/2 years I have had a number of little things malfunction but only two problems that absolutely required repair. The bad: The electrical system...wiper blades have a mind of their own in cold temperatures, anytime I do not manually lock the doors the alarm will trip within the next 5-20 minutes, fuel gauge is off, radio buttons do not light up and require a hard push to operate, auto mirrors and seats reset incorrectly, dome light works intermittently when liftgate is open. The ugly: I am just waiting for the tranny to go.
Favorite Features
Seats, suspension, roomy.

Have had to repair/replace: CPU ($200) Tighten wiper bolts ($50) Tranny leak ($140) Engine oil leaks (twice, $150 ea.) A/C ($1,300...ouch!) Rear stabilizer bar & suspension ($1250)
It's been a great car

The T&C is used primarily as a family vehicle around town and for long traveling vacations of 5 to 10 K miles. Have never had a failure on the road while traveling. Am planning on buying a new 2007 or 2008 model.
Favorite Features
Driver and passenger comfort and excellent cruise control system.

Our Town & Country has been nothing but trouble. We have had problems from trandmission to air conditioning to broken axle pins (twice). Not to mention all the smaller, somewhat less costly repairs. I do not recommend this van to anyone. It has been a thorn in my side for six years.

We bought this vehicle because we had baby on the way and wanted a larger space. The sliding doors easily accomadate the ease of installing and removing the baby seat. The captains passenger seats are easy to remove, but that rear bench is a killer. We have intermittant trouble w/ the wipers as well (seems mostly to occur at cold temps). This is true with the transmission as well. Transmission does not seem to engage in "Lock Up" in colder temps. "Lock Up" directly locks the transmission to the engine crankshaft via the torque converter to reduce slippage and increase MPG. HVAC only works on high fan speed. All of these are electrical in nature.

I bought this from a close friend who maintained the vehicle very well. I liked the vehicle but needed a car quick because I was rear ended in my BMW. I grew to love this vehicle. He had already changed the tranny. I believe that Chrysler paid for it. I have absolutely no troubles in 30K. For its size it is great in snow & great mileage. I consistently recieved 21 mpg average. Mid twenties on the highway. The drive is very comfortable. Huge box for carrying everything even 4x8 sheets of plywood. Excellant multipurpose vehicle. Easy oil change. I would highly recommend this vehicle. Driver door developed a little rust spot. Full size spare with easy access under rear door.
Favorite Features
Great looking. Areodynamic. Easy engine maintenance/ oil change. Very versatile. Low to ground easy in and out. Very easy to drive. Tracks great in snow. Great visability.
Suggested Improvements
Better head lights!!! Lighter seats for removal. Should be able to shut off Automatic door lock. Larger glove box.
Not too bad, but not the best

Loved the van as a first family vehicle, especially for the price I got it for. Rides great, and plenty of room. Only gripe is that at about 100k and to drop 2.5k on the transmission, replace an O2 Sensor, and the door locks go on and off like crazy while driving. My wife was about to commit herserlf to a nut house after dealing with that during a 4 hour road trip. All in All T and C's are known for a more prestigeus van, but I should have spent the extra money on an Honda Odyssey. Better Engine and quality, and more power.
Favorite Features
removal of back bench seat, capstain chairs and comfortable and easy to drive.
Suggested Improvements
Better Head Lights so you can see at night! A complete revamp of what you people are putting under the hood of these things (too many probs for way to long now!) A ramp to roll that heavy butt seat out the back!
Van wears well through time.

We've had our van for 8 years and now in 2005 it has 182,000 miles. Bought it in 1997 with 50,000 miles already on it. We love it and are going to purchase another one. The biggest problem is that at this mileage we are being "nickle-and-dimed" to death with little repairs. It is also beginning to sound like an older car. Has served our family well on many LONG driving trips and going into the city from our country home.
Favorite Features
Rear air/heat and quad seating. Wouldn't have a van without either.

Great car to drive, but we replaced the tranny after 25,000 miles (Chrysler paid for half) and needed a new engine after 65,000 miles (we paid for it all). Great design, abysmal build... broken window lift, broken emergency brake cable, broken hood latch, etc. Our repair costs alone average 15 cents a mile or more.
Favorite Features
When it works, everything.
Suggested Improvements
Build it right.

Very comfortable car. Very few repairs since I bought it used 2 years ago. A couple of complaints: powertrain module (computer part) has been replaced twice in the past 15 months. Also, wipers when used intermittently seem to go whenever they want and don't always turn off when I want them to.
Favorite Features
Good power (3.8L engine). Comfortable ride and good sound system. Really enjoy the dual heating controls up front for passenger/driver.
Suggested Improvements
The removal of seats is better than my last Dodge Caravan but are very heavy. The heating of the car could be a little stronger (it takes a little while to get the car warm inside).
