Ironic: Taking the PT cruiser out to fetch my 2000 FORD Excursion from the mechanic, the car: 2001 limited automatic 89,000.00 miles on it, I am second owner, had to go up an off-ramp from a four lane into the back roads towards the mechanic. halfway up there was a tremendous explosion sound and it threw some part or other away! after my 2001 pt cruiser tranny litteraly blew to pieces, my mechanic said that chrysler informed him that , along with the filter and fluid, the timing chain, the computer, all needed replaced after 40,000 miles. when asked why this was only information priviledged to chrysler dealership mechanics, the reply was, "there are no recalls, and if the transmission is not properly maintained, by taking it to the DEALERSHIP on the ... We just bought a used 2001 PT Cruiser Limited about 1 month ago. Car is in great shape and we love the gas mileage. All was fine the first three weeks and now we are having trouble. We have keyless remote that works fine. However, after we turn on the car and start driving we get a constant beep signal with the warning that a door is open. The first time ... Read More
I am currently on my 2nd PT Cruiser, a 2006 Signature Model, the previous was a 2002. The 2002 model had multiple issues with the wheels and steering wheel, the tires were always deflating. And after a few years of frequent rotations and constantly putting air in them (they were checked for leaks, none were found--in the tires anyway), I started having a non-stop shimmy in the steering wheel. I took ... Read More
Josh I have a similar problem with the trasmission on my 2001 PT Cruiser. As the car stops, it jerks. This has been going on for a while and they have done whatever software upgrades that were required. Now Chrysler says that in order to determine my problem they will need to open the transmission to see if it can be rebuilt. They are talking about more money than I think ... Read More

my wife just traded her 2001 pt cruiser in on a 2007 with 15,000 miles on it at a Chrysler dealership. The car was purchased on jan.2,2008 and at the time we asked where the block heater was as any car that is built for Canada has to come with a block heater. Anyway my wife took the car back to the dealer today so that it could be put up ... Read More
Chrysler makes some nice looking cars, but ownership experience is not great. I purchased new PT Cruiser Limited in 2001 and put only 30,000 miles on it. Since then I had to replace rack and pinion for 1800$, onboard computer and side air bag computer for 1000$, and another repair was for engine harness - estimated cost 1600$. Total about 4500$ in repairs in 6 years. And I took great maintenance ... Read More
Hi, I have a 2001 PT cruiser and I am getting an intermitent shimmy as I drive down the highway. It not a tire or anything. It will shimmy almost as if it is stuttering then it goes away then it happens again. Anyone have this issue?
I have a 2001 Limited Edition PT Cruiser. First of all the automatic locking system kept engaging every few minutes even though the doors were locked. Then, it started beeping when driving down the road of when parked (the sound it makes when you lock the doors with the keyless entry). Now, at random times the alarm with go off and I am not able to shut it off. When I ... Read More
I had a 2001 Touring and achieved 23-28 MPG. Car had 115,000 when I sold it for a 2006 GT. This HO Turbo gets 17-23, but there I only have about 3,000 on the engine. My 2001 MPG increased/stabilized after 3,000 on it. Looking forward to more improvements on the 2006...
My 2001 PT Cruiser Limited locks the doors automatically when the car reaches at around 15 km/h. This is normal. Many good European cars are made like this. I like this safety feature. I had encountered a couple of electrical problems with the PT. In fact, my present PT is my second one. The first one had transmission problem on the first day. The dealer (very decent indeed) gave me another ... Read More
I had similar problems. Warranty expired at 3 years/36,000 miles. At 4 years and 36,633 miles the TCM went out on my 2001 PT Cruiser. Local dealerships told me 1-2 weeks before they could work on car so I took it to a professional mechanic. I contacted Chrysler after the repair but they refused to consider warranty. Four months later at 40,831 miles TCM goes out again! Tried local dealerships again, ... Read More

Hi, Can you let me know what steps you took to have Chrysler to repair your car? I have a 2001 Limited Edition and the engine blew at 39,664 miles. I have sent letters to customer service and to EVERYONE on the board of directors in Germany. All ... Read More
I am looking at the Mini, the GT Cruiser, the Honda Element and they all have problems. The Mini has a bone-jarring ride on the Cooper S and you can't get an automatic on the S, but if you get the plain Cooper CVT, you don't have adequate power. You can't win either way. The Honda Element lacks a moonroof and is supposed to be slow with the automatic. I was ... Read More
These cars have attracted lots of interest in the past year or so, with big articles in both Car & Driver and Consumer Reports in the last few months. And I expect that in the coming year even more people will be drawn to 5-door hatchbacks, which offer some SUV functionality with a better driving experience, better gas mileage, and a better price than the trucks which have dominated the roads ... I am currently driving a Dodge Dakota, but the lease ends this year. In my next vehicle, which I intend to purchase, I am looking to retain some of the utility of a pickup truck while adding four doors and a full backseat for family functionality as well as affordability in the $20,000 price range. These factors, combined with eyecatching good looks, make the PT Cruiser a strong candidate on my ... Read More

My hubby is a mechanic at a local beer distributor. This company has 4 2001 PT Cruisers, bought brand new, ranging in mileage from 25,000 to 36,000 miles. Just this week here are two discoveries: All 4 needed new front brake jobs. One was so bad it had to have the rotors replaced. Granted these are driven by salesmen, some of them fairly young and in all kinds of traffic. He ... Read More

chrysler.com the official site seems to have the 2002 cruiser information already in place. go to the "build your own" feature for the PT and it will give you a choice 2001 or 2002 model. The cruiser is my first choice but I think it will be out of my budget, the hyundai elantra GT hatchback looks good though.
Just picked up my PT (cranberry limited) last week. Now there are 4 chrysler products at our house ; 88 plymouth sundance, 89 dodge caravan, 97 chrysler cirrus Lxi, 2001 PT cruiser. I think DC is on the right track and look forward to many more miles in DC products.
