Chevy Volt almost burned my house down
By powenp on
Vehicle
2013 Chevrolet Volt 4dr Hatchback (gas/electric hybrid DD)
Review
I've been driving the Volt for 18 months. I loved the car until a month ago when I went to unplug the charger from our garage outlet and the outlet was melted - very scary situation. I've spent a month trying to get GM and my dealer to do something (Woodward Motors in Andover, MA). GM wants me to produce the license of the electrician who built my house in 1982 before they do anything. No joke... Don't buy this car, it's dangerous and GM and dealers don't stand behind it.

This sounds like a bad plug. I've replaced many plugs that have worn out. I would replace this plug with a 20 amp plug and make sure your wiring is up to code. The Volt charges in two modes 8amps and 12amps. It's funny you spent a month blaming GM and no time investigating your equipment?

Apparently your wiring wasn't up to the task. Was your receptacle on a 15 amp line? Was the wiring the correct gauge? I'll bet not. Did you read the owners manual?
