2012 Chevrolet Volt 4dr Hatchback (gas/electric hybrid DD)
Review
Traded a 2011 Prius for the 2012 Volt and couldn't be happier with my decision. While I liked the Prius and would recommend the car in an instant, it does not have the driving dynamics or the fit and finish of the Volt. It's also not the most attractive car, whereas I find the Volt to be reasonably good looking. The Volt is faster than the numbers suggest, is quieter at normal commuting speeds than anything else on four wheels, has tons of tech that works quite well, and is actually fun to drive (the Prius never was). Even without the tax credit this car represents the future of automotive travel today and has no equal, so in my opinion the asking price is reasonable and the value solid.
Favorite Features
The all electric operation is fantastic. In the Prius you spend way too much time trying to maximize your electric motor usage. This means idling away from stop lights at a crawl in an attempt to keep the gas motor from running. With the volt you just accelerate smoothly away from a stop with the rest of the traffic quietly and effeciently. The navigation system and other tech pieces are well done and easy to use. The car rides nicely and the front seat areas are nicely trimmed and very comfortable. This car has some of the nicest seats in any GM production vehicle in my honest opinion. I also love the gauges and touch sensitive center controls. Overall there isn't much to complain about!
Suggested Improvements
Comparisons to the Prius are hard for me not to make, and there are a few areas the Prius wins hands down. Packaging is the biggest. The Prius has one of the best back seats and cargo areas of any cars its size. The same can't be said of the Volt. While the Volt's rear seats are comfortable, they don't have the same room as the Prius, and the cargo area isn't as deep. Also when in range extending mode the Volt isn't too bad, but the Prius's gas engine was quieter and more refined. I also think people buying the car in a cold climate should test drive it first as the HVAC system isn't terribly efficient in sub freezing temperatures.
