Review of the 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT

  • Strong drivetrains, loads of room inside and a long features list make this an attractive family vehicle, but the cheap interior materials and iffy handling keep it from gaining our full recommendation.

  • Safety
  • Pros

Class-leading engine power, soft highway ride, room for seven, extensive features list, simple controls.

  • Cons

Skittish handling around corners, numb steering, generic interior design, low-grade interior materials.

  • What's New for 2004

Power-adjustable pedals, a DVD-based navigation system, automatically locking doors and XM Satellite Radio are new options this year. Additionally, the instrument panel now sports a freshened monochromatic look. The North Face Edition package gets unique 17-inch wheels standard, while LT models get a new optional 17-inch wheel design.

03 tb ext, 94k miles,

Vehicle: 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT LS 4WD 4dr SUV (4.2L 6cyl 4A)

Had this from day one. Just had dealer replace the exhaust manifold ($100 cost to me, could have beem $770). Cracking of the manifold is common, rear of the O2 sensor. If you smell exhaust under the hood when cold and freshly started, as well as a strange noise that clears up in 3-5 minutes, you have the problem. GM covered this up to 8 years and 80K miles for free, I was lucky to get for $100. Thanx GM :) Replaced all four antisway links myself, easy (gets rid of clunking when going over bumps). Also had to replace all four brake rotors and pad sets. Very happy with the Rugged Trail T/As, 94K mi. on the remaining orig. pair. Installed K&N cold air intake kit, no diff in econ.

Never again!

Vehicle: 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT LS 4WD 4dr SUV (4.2L 6cyl 4A)

Rear air compressor, fan motor, complete brake system (twice!), front wheel bearings and now, the transmission is shot! All at 48,500 miles! Virtually every big ticket repair that could go wrong, did. Awful, awful piece of crap. Tends to slip in even mildly wet weather, overall poor traction anyway. Creature comforts are average at best. I'll never again buy this car and wouldn't recommend it to anyone, no matter what the price!

Great suv if your not

Vehicle: 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT LS 4WD 4dr SUV (4.2L 6cyl 4A)

I love my TrailBlazer, the extended version. Great family car seats 7. Great in the winter weather. I hate that I have to turn it in in July, but I can't afford the gas. But don't judge by me, as I am a single parent. So with a family with two incomes don't be afraid its a great vehicle!

New rig for the bigger

Vehicle: 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT LS 4WD 4dr SUV (4.2L 6cyl 4A)

I bought this vehicle used, I am the 2nd owner. I fell in love with it right away, the 3rd row seat is a god send, and I love the styling. The only drawback is the mileage. 12-14mpg at best in city

Not too bad..

Vehicle: 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT LS 4WD 4dr SUV (4.2L 6cyl 4A)

Nice vehicle, very large, the folding seats aren't as difficult as these other geniuses make'em out to be, lots of room for hauling...everything, wish the 3rd row seat would fold flat. seatbelts require extra effort to put on (installed in seat). Excellent for a family vehicle. Ran very well up to two major accident's (bent frame rail and rolled on side...thanks honey :) However, safety wise, she and the kids were well protected, nothing but bumps and bruises. Related to the accidents or not, the tach went on the fritz as well as the speedo, rear heater core went bad <-- kinda early for 50k. Gas mileage isn't as bad as previous posts claim, large SUV w/4.2L 6 cylinder 250+horsepower

Gm junk

Vehicle: 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT LS 4WD 4dr SUV (4.2L 6cyl 4A)

I had never owned a Chevy SUV before and was excited to get a Trailblazer EXT. Great style, good features at a reasonable price. No quality. The 1st 3 months I had 9 problems with 2 trips in for an upshift problem that they claimed they could not find. GM suggested I find a dealer that had a tool to install that would monitor the problem, but I had to reseach and find the dealer that had it and go there. They had no interest or concern of the many problems or required trips to the dealer. If you are thinking of buying one, hopefully you do not get one of the many lemons they have out there.
