2012 Chevrolet Tahoe LTZ 4dr SUV 4WD (5.3L 8cyl 6A)
I bought a Tahoe, with the towing package as I go cross country 2x times yearly towing a trailer with a gross wt. of 4500 lbs. (well below the wt rating). I also transport sporting equipment to remote areas but do not go off roading. In 36,000 mi, both differentials and rear shocks have had to be replaced, the Bridgestones that came on it handled poorly in even wet conditions and had to be replaced at 30,000 mi. Mileage without a trailer maxes out on the highway at 15, rated 21. Chevy technicians always seem "miffed" by clear symptoms of issues which require return visits for repairs until they find the issue. 3rd row seats tough to remove and store. Great interior cargo capacity for general storage, but very few compartments so you will need to be creative for tools and small items. When not in automatic or 4 wheel drive (extremely poor handling) the SUV really is a nice drive when you upgrade the original tires. This vehicle is really well suited for taking four people with lots of cargo on a road trip, all are comfortable, if you can handle the cost of the gas. It really is more of a "soccer mom" vehicle, if you really need the power and performance of a hearty SUV; this is not the one.
Better testing to assure the vehicle really can tow and perform in real 4x4 conditions without mechanical failure. Equip with higher quality tires. Install more cargo compartments for small items storage. Third row seats need to fold flat for storage, not be lifted out and stored externally. Some of the instruments are excluded from view or easy reach by the steering wheel and gear shifter (an issue if you need to use manual trans when towing) ; entertainment system and climate control are a far reach and require looking, not feeling to find.
