  I own the same vehicle, and of the all the other Chevy Tahoe/Suburban owners that I know of, none still have the original transmission (granted I do not know that many..10 perhaps). Mine died at 117K miles and I am of the opinion that the tranny was not really a chevy strongpoint, but this might be a biased opinion.   I have a 1996 Chevy Tahoe 2door 4wd the service engine light has come on and now it wont go into reverse ? It start up just fine and will go in drive and neutral but makes a winding noise when you put it in reverse and just idles? Could this be something simple with the transmission that I could fix?

  Thanks for the responses. I pulled the coil wire the other day and cranked it over and I have good spark from there. I pulled 1 plug wire but did not get a spark from the wire to a bolt on the engine. So i'm assuming the module may be bad.I'm gonna pull a plug wire and see if there is a spark from there.   Check out the crankshaft position sensor, if the 96 has one. I have a 97 and the symptoms sound similar to mine and the sensor failed. I replace the sensor and it will start. My problem is that my sensor keeps going bad and it happens around this time every year. Not sure if it is moisture getting in to the sensor, wiring, connectors or something else.

  Too many variables. Being that it set up, I'd start off with the basics: Spark, Fuel, Air. Check your spark with a spark tester to make sure that you have strong fire. Check your fuel at the test port and with a fuel gauge tester. You need to make sure that you have proper fuel pressure to start the vehicle and no line constriction.   My 2000 Tahoe came with the same tires stock, not exactly the bet tires (putting it nicely) as far as im concerned, at 12,000 miles i had to replace the tires. Also Yes we had a 1996 Tahoe and that body style 1995-1999 had terrible steering, very lose and you were always moving the wheel, however i think Chevy REALLY improved in the new body style.
