2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4dr Extended Cab LS 4WD SB (4.8L 8cyl 4A)

Review

Real bad build quality. The brakes are horrible - expect to replace all rotors and pads especially the back every 20,000 miles. Items replaced under warrenty: Steering column (twice); passenger window motor + track; heater element. Here is what went after warrenty: anti-lock brake sensor (40,000 miles) ~ $250; water pump (48,000 miles) ~ $450; the steering column that was replaced twice is cluncking again. Numerous other defects too small to mention. This truck is literally garbage.

Favorite Features

Decent gas mileage for a 4wd

Suggested Improvements

After 80 years in business, please hire someone who can design brakes.

I am or was a loyal Chevrolet customer. Well i'm sad to say that this truck has changed my mind. I have had multiple problems with it. From tail light to water pump. The quality of my 91' was way better. The worst part of it was when the warrenty ran out ( it had 36200 miles and they wanted to charge me for fixing a problem the hadn't fixed in the past) Chevrolet decided not to stand by their product. Really disapointing, well Toyota here I come.

Favorite Features

It did have a good ride when it was in for repair.

Suggested Improvements

The cup holders need to be reworked.

I wanted a full size truck in 2WD that was good on gas and served me well everyday. This has been it. With over 120,000 miles it has given me zero trouble. Passengers comment frequently on it's roomy and comfortable interior - even in the back seat; probably the best bench in the industry. With an average of 18mpg, it's no eco-car, but compared to it's 4WD bretheren, it's awesome. That goes for 4WD mid-size trucks too (at 16mpg). Good looks, solid build, dependable - what more do you want?

Favorite Features

Smooth ride and roomy interior. The folding rear bench allows for huge interior storage space if required. Decent gas mileage for a full size truck.

No maintenance issues. This truck is more comfortable to drive than any of my cars. I towed a trailer with a used car across country and got over 17 miles to the gallon. Most of that trip was on two lane roads and through towns.

Favorite Features

Excellent acceleration. Solid ride and feel. Quiet (no road or air noise). Auto volume on radio works better than others i have heard.

Suggested Improvements

Power windows in the back.

Review

I have had this truck for 4 years and have put 71000 miles on it so far. I have yet to have any major problems with this truck. Also most of the minor problems were covered with in the 36000 mile warranty. The most recent and most annoying problems have been with the electrical system. It seems the truck has developed a short some where that no one can find. It keeps blowing the fuse for the driver seat and passenger window. I also have a tail light and running head light that goes on and off.

Favorite Features

Good power. Much better transmission than the 2000 line. Reliable.

Suggested Improvements

Need to improve electrical system. It really needs better tires from factory.

Review

The problems on this Silverado are numerous. The biggest are the brakes. You need to push the pedal to the floor in order to get the truck to stop and sometimes that doesn't do it. In less than 30,000 miles I have had the steering column greased, then replaced. Heater replaced, and power window motor replaced. These are annoying, but the brakes are dangerous.

Favorite Features

Exterior looks pretty good, and it gets decent mpg for a truck

Suggested Improvements

Fix the braakes.

I've had only one minor problem with my truck, more of a nuisance actually. The steering shaft's tenon-and-spline compression joint requires additional grease packing to minimize some minor knocking noises on bumpy roads. Overall, a solid, reliable vehicle.

Favorite Features

Very comfortable cab, great ride for a truck.

Suggested Improvements

I wish the headrest came up more. I'm a tall driver.

Review

I loved everything about this truck, except the seat gives the most uncomfortable ride of any vehicle I've ever owned or ridden in. I could never get comfortable in the driver's seat, not even on short trips. I couldn't stand to drive the truck anymore so traded it in. I did get an awesome trade on it (300 over Blue Book), so that's certainly a plus. I was very disappointed in the comfort level of this truck. It drives awesome, it's quiet, and I never had one problem with it. If only the seat was even somewhat comfortable I would have kept it for much, much longer.

Favorite Features

Everything but the seat. This is a great truck, but Chevy, do something with the dang seats.

Suggested Improvements

Find somebody to design seats that are actually comfortable, and I will certainly purchase another one. I'm staying away until then.

I have owned several trucks-all of which have been GM products-and this one is horrible! The 'check 4X4' light is on regularly, even though this truck has not been in 4WD more than twice, and under no load. I had to have 3 injectors, a mass airflow sensor, the catalytic converter and all new plugs replaced at 41K-just outside of warranty. The wiper motor just went kaput at 52K, and the dealership service department has been less than sympathetic. This truck has been basic transportation and never towed/hauled anything! Never had to work a day in it's life! As a-soon-to- be former loyal GM fan, I'm going to trade it ASAP on a Toyota or Nissan.

Favorite Features

The performance (when it's not in the shop) is OK. Interior is like a Caddy and the Bose stereo is why I've kept it so long.

Suggested Improvements

Reliability...hear me, GM?? The quality of this 5.3 stinks. The 5.7 was far superior. My last truck had well over 100K and never had to go to the shop, never leaked, and didn't burn oil. For $40,000, I could have bought a Tundra AND a Corolla...

Review

This truck replaced a '91 S10 2wd that was bought new and was faithful its whole life but the rust finally deemed the little truck a loss. This time 4wd and extended cab were musts and this truck was sitting there waiting for us with 27k on the clock and clean as can be. As you can imagine the difference between the 2 is huge and this brute makes you king of the road with the height, the 5.3 under the hood, and these leather seats that I'd never think would be in a Chevy pickup. This truck is wonderful and with a couple personal touches it will probably be in the family until it turns to dust.

Favorite Features

Seats, height, sound system, engine power, 4wd, 16 inch wheels (tires are cheaper), cd changer in the dash

Suggested Improvements

1-2 shift is horrible on light throttle. Chevy tried to make it soft and less undetectable, it will get a shift kit as soon as warranty is up. Would rather have a 4wd shifter than buttons, rear brakes have been done twice, pedal is a little soft, badly done rear disc system, improvements will be done
